   * * *

   "Invinoveritas!"

THE MIDNIGHT TROLLEYBUS

(Translated from the Russian

When I'm in trouble and totally done
and when all my hope I abandon
I get on the blue trolley bus on the run,
   the last one,
   at random.

Night trolley, roll on sliding down the street,
   around the boulevards keep moving
to pick up all those who are wrecked and in need
   of rescue
   from ruin.

Night trolley bus will you please open your doors!
On wretched cold nights, I can instance,
your sailors would come, as a matter of course,
   to render
   assistance.

So many a time they have lent me a hand
to help me get out of grievance...
Imagine, there is so much kindness behind
   this silence
   and stillness.

Last trolley rolls round the greenery belt
and Moscow, like river, dies down...
the hammering blood in my temples I felt
   calms down
   calms down.

The Song

of Komsomol Goddess

(Translated from the Russian

   I'm looking at the photograph:
She's got two plaits, austere eyes,
She's got jacket on, a manlike stuff,
With friends around, girls and guys.

Outside the rain keeps dinging tensely:
   Foul weather and no sun;
   But the fingers reach spontaneously
For the holster of the gun.

Soon she will leave for good and all
   Thunder will break out, too,
Well now, this Goddess of the Komsomol...
But it's a different plot for you!

In the corner near old bakery
Where the summer sweeps the dust,
   In a sky-blue T-shirt, leisurely,
   Girl of Komsomol goes past.

She has had her plait all sheared, and
   It's in beauty parlour now.
Just one curl, for all she cared,
Waving on her cheek, and how!.

And there`s no sign of gods at all,
There are just lots of things to do.
Well now, this Goddess of the Komsomol...
But, it's a different plot for you!

THE LAST SUBURBAN TRAIN

(Translated from the Russian

Boys carrying knives and girls with false teeth...
Two women conductors like drowsy sphinxes ...

In sleeping car the workers
Are in the grip of sleep,
   And in crowded entry
The drunk guitar strings weep...

I'm in this crowded entry,
Heat giving me the hump, .
Guitars and thieves are buzzing
   Like in a gipsy camp.

Well, somehow it so happened
   That I began to read
   My rhymes amid big shadows,
Butts, husk and rests of feed.

They have their own crafts , and
I read my rhymes for them
   About a girl got frozen
   To icy windows then.

They sued time out of number
And spit on firing squad
They would avoid all troubles,
   Escape, no matter what. .

Like hell they need the girlie
   And rhymes of my array!
The girl with bang of hair
   And powdered face? No way.

   The features of a drunkard,
   Her blouse- what a choice!
The whole of dactylography
Of Malakhovka boys ...

Well, why you're shedding tears
In such a lighted, mode?
And tell me, why you whisper
Obscenely cleanest word?..

You suddenly get out,
Driving all insane
you're purer than Beatrice
As you get off the train.

THE MONOLOGUE OF THE BEATNIK

(Translated from the Russian

   Rebellion of machines

Escape - to yourself, to republic of Haiti , to churches, to toilets,
   to Egypt -
   Escape!

The heaps of machines roar and mew, smoke and fume, they are angry:
   "We are hungry"

Dark machines, like Batus, have enslaved us:
   "Mercedes!"

   Their arrogant myrmidons,
   Drinking from glass gasoline,
   Figure out: whoever in England
Has started rebellion against the machine?
   Let's flee! I'll join in!..

   At night, overcoming its fear,
   Robot says to inventor:
   "My dear,

Give me your wife, if you can,
You know, I am fond of brunettes
I love her for all I am worth
So you had better give in!"

Oh, things most predacious of all!
The veto is put on the soul.
We flee to the hills and speak in our beards,

We jump into the water, naked,
   But rivers get shallow, or
Fish die in the sea ever more.

Our women give birth to Rolls-Royces
   Radiation rejoices!

...My souls is a little wild animal
   Walking around back streets
Like a puppy with a piece of rope
You whine, run around and hop.

The time is now whistles nicely
   Over fiery Tennessee
   Sophisticated like Sirin
   With the light-alloy chassis.

Through and through for all I'm worth, oh yeah,

THE SONG

ABOUT TWO BEAUTIFUL CARS

(Translated from the Russian

With no traces and no bans,
   Burning tyres on the asphalt,
From the nightmare of the town
Cars flee dashing from the bustle,
   Motorcars, as big as tanks,
"Lincolns", "Fords", good old "Silenes "
Compact elegant "Mustangs".
"Mercedes", "Citroens".
It is worth their while, they decide
To the cities it's vendetta of a sort!
Hurry up, if only spark plugs were all right,
Carburettors, and whatever they have got.

Now they cannot see the roads,
   Limousine, they're here and there...
And amid them, like two spots,
There are two, so nice and fair,
As if bound with trailing cables
   (Thread will break where it's the weakest);
   Throttles and accelerators
Will be out of work the quickest.

It is worth their while, they assume
If only to get liberated - the bills will be paid.
He will tell her a word I presume,
With the Klaxon or something whatever they'll get.

   This build-up of cars unseen
Bears a grudge against your motions.
   Light gray colour Limousine!
Don't lose sight of it, be cautious.
Up ahead you see a fork!
Run the risk! More trust and power!
You'll be surely late, you folk!
You delayed, you light grey colour!

It is worth their while, they thought of a kind
What is now, should he signal to billboard?
Well, perchance it's a load off his mind,
Or a load off the hood or whatever they've got.

No, a fork is like a plight,
Lines apart - you're lost, you gather.
Is it true that junctions might
   Never bring us close together?
That is right one changed the speed,
   Setting it at number seven,
   Light gray Limousine forgot
To apply the breaks. By Heaven!

Well, is coming together a dream?
Or is it vendetta against city fuss?
Wheels and bridges stared to skim
As well as the hearts or whatever one has.

`Moscow - Odessa' Flight

(Translated from the Russian

Moscow - Odessa is my flight. By Jesus!
   It's been delayed again, alas!
Now there came, all in blue, like princess
   the stewardess,
   Reliable as `Civil Airlines'.

There are no clouds over Murmansk, and
You can now fly to Ashkhabad or anywhere
   Kiev, Kharkov, Lvov, Kishinev, Tashkent
Admit but I don't need to fly there

They told me there's no use hope for heaven,
Not to expect to fly away to-day.
And now Odessa Flight has been delayed until eleven,
This time it's frost and rime of the runway.

In Leningrad the roof leaks through and through
Why not fly there? No, I do not care.
It's warm and clear in Tbilisi, too,
There's Georgian tea, but I will not fly there.

I hear Rostovers now to are flying out
But I need Odessa, and I've got my rights,
I need to fly where airplanes are not allowed,
And thus they cancel and put off the flights.

I need to fly where snow falls day and night
And where snow will fall. But somewhere
It's bright and warm and all is clear and light,
It's good, but I don't need to go there.

They don't let in and don't let out there,
It isn't fair, I'm sick, my heart just whines.
But now the stewardess invites us to embark, she doesn't care,
She's looking like the `Civil Airlines'.

The god forsaken place is open now,
One wouldn't go for love or money there.
The Vladivostok port of is open. Wow!
Paris is open, too, but I don't care.
   .
We shall take off, the weather will get better
The bans will now be lifted
The plane has strained itself, the turbines squeal,
   I don't believe it for I know that I won't be admitted
They'll find good reasons, surely, they will.

I need to fly where fog and snowstorms reign,
They say tomorrow it will snow somewhere.
They've opened London, Deli, Magadan again,
They've opened all, but I don't need to go there.

Now should I laugh or cry? - the evil is not lesser,
She takes us back into the past, - alas! -
That stewardess, as slender as an airliner, Miss Odessa
   Accessible like `Civil Airlines'.

The flight has been delayed till eight,.
   And passengers sleep humbly, seated,
God Damn! I'm sick and tired and can't wait,
And so I'm flying where we'll be admitted!

AIRPLANES

(Translated from the Russian

There are plenty of them on the planet.
Over the pole, a tropic, a summit...
There's neither a deuce, nor God nor a fairy,
So I am a little bit scary.

Now I get on the plane,
   I am waving,
I'm doing it for my friends to see.
And my nuclear age is taking
The plane off the earth with me.

Now the weight tears off my body,
And I tremble, Antaeus in my mind.
Where are you, grass-hoppers, so jolly?
I've got shivers down my spine.

   We are flying,
   With friendly handshakes,
   We absorb those disgusting stakes
When the speed is five thousand, not less...
We take pills for excitement and aches...
   We shake off everything
   In case
We ramble high up in space.
   We fly
   when we're not in flight
For we cannot help flying these days.

   No, we can't!
And although, like a little one,
I'm about to cry out of fear
I myself am a plane made for fun
Paper plane, like a warbler, so dear.

So I walk on the verge of breakdown
   Believing in wonders and aim.
Heaven helps me to hold my ground,
I will not drop out of the game!

For the aircraft engines are roaring,
And tracks cut the space up on high.
And the sun strokes my pinions showing
   Unusually red in the sky.

Thus the long armed speedometer gains
Revolutions which roll and roll it.
   Airplanes, oh my dear airplanes!
   Very fragile
   And very solid.

SPACE EXPLORATION

((Translated from the Russian

The attic window now was open wide,
I went up to it, and I looked outside.
The windowsill stuck to my belly. I
   Saw under clouds a pigeon hover spinning;
Above the clouds the cupola of the sky
Looked rather like an ice hole, not a ceiling.

The sun was shining. I smelt the mignonette.
Our weathervane squealed like goatsucker yet.
The house cast its shadow. And the fence
Cast actually a zebra, not a shadow,
This made the yard look ugly, like offence.
Nearby, the barns subsided into furrow.

The neighbour rooster fussed over the hen
While ours was dispelling its bad mood and pain,
Seeing such thing in strong sinewy crowing
I disregarded dryly this dramatic sight
Switched on the radio and bid myself good night.
   This Babylon on batteries, enjoying,

Announced that a man was up in space
Meanwhile I lay in bed wearing a cool face
Thinking about the world of many faces
I thought, well, whether you see things or not
If it's some kind of news, no matter what
We learn it unexpectedly... Good Gracious!

   * * *

(Translated from the Russian

It's night in simple town taking pride
In that it is shown in the atlas
(topographer must have been off balance,
or got along with judge's girl all right).
Having got tired of its own whims
The space is taking off the load of greatness
Confining only to the traits, it seems,
Of the Main Street, while Time with patience
And coolness in the backbone, takes a look
At the colonial shop which in its depths had masses
Of all the world could make: from pin and hook
To telescope and any such devices.

There is a cinema, saloons, a coffee shop,
Around the corner, with the curtains drawn ,
A bank of stone with eagle sprawled on top,
And church which, definitely, would be forlorn,
Along with nets set by it now and again,
And if it weren't next to the post-office
And if no children were born there, then
The pastor, probably, would baptize autos.

Grasshoppers turbulently jump and crawl,
At 6 p.m., like after nuclear winter,
You won't meet anybody, not a soul.
The moon emerges fitting into window,
   A dark quadrangle looking like
   Ecclesiastes. Tearing like Gloria,
   Luxurious Buick will throw light
Upon the figure of Unknown Warrior.

You don't dream here about a girl in pants
But rather thinks about your address.
The milkman, seeing milk go sour, at once
Will figure out your date of death.
You can live here without a calendar, or map,
Take bromine, do not go out, and puzzle,
You look into the mirror, like a lamp
Will look into the drying out puddle.

THINGS

(Translated from the Russian

With every passing day it is becoming harder
To find the things I lived with when a child so well.
Where are the "lightening" lamps? Where is black powder?
Where is black water from the bottom of the well?
Where is "Isle of Dead" in decadency framing?
Where are the photographs of moustached people?
Where are the plush red sofas, who can tell me?
Where are cane airplanes, so nice and simple?

Where's Nadson's sickly TB trimeter?
Where a the cards on pretty-pretty lawyers,
Where are triangular galoshes smelling bitter,
And ostrich comfort from the sloping shoulders?

Where are the curls of tipsy symbolists, who knows?
Where are the futurists' dinner conversations?
Where are chestnuts and lime-trees with their mottoes?
Where are the crazy guns and flagrant violations?

Where are the "hard sign" and the other Russian letter?
One has been gone, the other one was changed,
And what wasn't separated by a comma, later
Was severed by the loss of life and snag and age.

I've done so little for the future, really.
But it's the future that I miss so badly.
And I don't want to start all over, willy-nilly,
Maybe, I haven't worked in vain so heartily.

Where is the new companions `s warnings
That they belong to me by right
I dare encroach on my grandchild's belongings
The bread of great grandson, and his son's glory.

The  Unknown Lady

(Translated from the Russian

The heated air in the restaurants
Is  wild and dull as anything,
The drunken  hails are ruled by  restless
And noxious spirit of the spring.

Far off, beyond the dusty alley
   Over the boring   country side
There is a bakeshop,  and the valley
Resounds with crying of a child.

And every night, beyond the barriers,
   Parading, cocking their hats,
   Amidst the ditches the admirers
   Perambulate with dear hearts.

Above the lake the creak of ore-lock
And women's screams impale the place,
And in the sky, the moon disk warlock,
   Inanely smiling makes a face.

And every night, my friend appears
As  a reflection in my glass,
Like me, he's stunned  and  set at ease
By magic liquid, drunk en mass.

The  footmen, true to their habits,
Relax at tables next to us,
   And drunkards, staring  like rabbits,
   Exclaim:  In vino veritas!

And  every evening  at this  hour
(or is it just a dreamy  case?)
A waist in satin,  like a flower,
Moves past the window in the haze.

   Without drunken men to hinder,
Alone, she walks across the room
And settles down by the window
   Exhaling fog and sweet perfume.

There is a kind of old times flavour
About her silky clothes and things:
Her hat, in mourning plumes as ever,
Her hand and fingers, all in rings.

I feel her close (a strange emotion),
And looking through the veil,  I see
The  vast of an amazing ocean,
The coast of an amazing sea.

I am informed of inmost secrets,
Somebody's sun is now all  mine,
My  body, heart and soul, in sequence,
Have all been pierced by the wine.

The  ostrich plumes, desired and welcome,
Are gently swaying in my mind,
And  dark  blue eyes, as  deep as welkin,
Are blooming  on the distant side.

Deep in my soul I have  some riches
And I'm the one who has the key!
You're right, you heady monstrous creature!
   In vino veritas,  I see.

In taverns, street bends, and alleys,
In electric reverie by day
I was searching for exceedingly marvellous
   Beauties that loved hearsay.

The streets were all drunk from curses.
There were suns in the shop windows then.
Oh, the beauty of feminine faces!
Oh, those proud gazes of men!

They were tsars, not ramblers and pilgrims!
I asked an old man in surprise:
" Was it you who had painted their fingers
With pearls at a fabulous price?

Did you give them fur coats to wear?
Did you burn them with a shaft of light?
Did you paint their lips like smear,
And their brows, arch-like and bright?

But the old man remained quite reticent
   Following the crowd to dream.
   I was alone, mysteriously radiant,
To imbibe this music of gleam
   .
Meanwhile they kept passing by there,
And each of them hoped deep at heart,
   As someone beyond compare,
To happy blue lands to depart.

So a pair after pair they went and...
Blessed Angel, I thought, would come by.
So that here on the rejoicing pavement ,
It might take one of them to the sky ...

Up above on the dangerous terrace
A dwarf, curling up, keeps the pass,
And the tongue spread out in the airs
Seemed to be a red banner to us.

Around my neck a string of beads,
In my wide muff my hands I'm hiding,
My eyes are vacant, I am in bits,
But never again will I be crying.

My face appears to be pale
From silk, as good as lilac now,
My fringe, unwoven like a trail,
Hangs down, up to my eyebrow.

This sluggish gait of mine, indeed,
Is not like flight in any way,
It feels like raft under my feet, -
   Not little squares of parquet.

My pallid mouth is not pressed,
My heavy breathing is put out,
And flowers tremble on my chest
From date that never came about.

FASHIONABLE DRESS

(Translated from the Russian

by Alec Vagapov)

They have brought Katya a present,
   A souvenir from overseas:
   An amazing dress! So pleasant!
The whole world on it one sees.
This way, that way - many a word,
The names of cities of the world:
   "Moscow", "London", "Tokyo" -
It's just the sleeves, there're many more!
On the back: "Rome", "Istanbul"
"Paris", "Montreal", "Kabul".
On the chest: "Marseille", "Milan"
"Madrid", Geneva" and "Tehran".

On the hem there are some more:
"Brussels" ,"Vienna", "Singapore",
   "Zurich", "Nice", "Tunisia", "Bonn"
"Copenhagen" and so on.

As she puts on this nice dress
   Everybody comes and says:
"Hello, Katya, I like this!
May I read your garment please?

What can Katya say to this?
She is cross and vexed to tears.
   Boys admire her and note:
Are you a manual or what?

As for friends of hers who rather
   Tend to envy one another,
They are quick to say: "We guess
You can lend us your nice dress?.."
   Only father feels distress:
   He's displeased with daughter's dress:
"Well, it's all a bunch of crap,
All the cities are mixed up
   Here is Delhi, there's Bombay?
   Amsterdam near Delhi, eh?

If you learn this lesson, - hark!-
You can get a bad mark!

The JEANS

(Translated from the Russian

by Alec Vagapov)

   I'm on the saddle now,
I'm a lucky man. And how!
   I'm wearing new jeans, man!
   I look down on everyone.
I am dressed up like a dude,
   Wearing velvet, looking cute!
The foreign label it has got
Speaks for itself and tells a lot:
   Anyone can understand
What the firm is and what land.

In the classroom there I stand
At the blackboard, chalk in hand,
   Our teacher screws his eyes:
"Now, what is it? Was ist das?"
"Can't you see it - says the class
In a whisper - "was das"?
It's the first grade! It's the import!
   Ivanov is dressed like lord.

   Lada Puzikova whispered this:
   "Ivanov, now tell me please,
What do you, by any chance,
   Need apart from foreign pants?"

SODA WATER

There he comes up to soda water booth
As if it were a real clockwork toy,
   An arrogant sophisticated boy,
A favourite of slot machines, like youth.

   Then, the conceited fantasist first-class,
Inserts a coin into the slot, and putting
His cheek to tender splashes softly shooting,
The fountain he catches with the glass.

Oh, how I wish I had his self-esteem
   And simple secrecy of familiarity!
   No, I do not deserve such act of charity;
Let it get spilled beside me in a stream.

Meanwhile the kid, concerned with marvel,
Carries the glass of seven facets in his palm,
And the reflection falls upon the gravel,
And badly hurts, without meaning harm.

A bit afraid, I join the game at last,
And with a blissful feeling, seeing the risk
I yield to the temptation of the disk,
My heart stops beating, and I take the glass.

Then, livening up from silver chains, a pool
Comes into being, emerging sweet and salty,
Filled with the breath of unfamiliar quality
And multitude of bubbles, fresh and cool.

The rainbows which came out, all the better,
Transfix the sky in momentary sweetness,
And now with tickling, gentle and solicitous,
The tongue tries all the seven tastes of spectre.

The soul of the machine, so dark and drab,
Looks in a kindly outmoded fashion, and
Like peasant woman, cool-headed and dispassionate,
Might give a wanderer to drink from wooden cup.

THE CUBES

Let us fold the wings of our visions.
It's night. The houses bunch up and crowd.
   The shadows show like demolitions,
the lantern is a broken light, flamed out.
The wind mows down the furniture herein.
The mirror in the room is quite unable
to hold the oranges, the tray and table.
As for my face, it's emerald green.

You are in black, a flight, a poem, a romance
of gloomy corners in the varied world we live in
A mourning theorem, you turn for once
your pointed knee towards the ceiling

God, in this dreadful world that we live in
   Compositors are rearranging
the letters and whole lines of living
Let's fold our wings, oh my high Angel!

   пунцовой цифрою зацвел;

   My calendar, half fallen, opens
and blooms as crimson date again,
the witching frost has drawn opals
   and palms upon the windowpane.

Bent like a radiant arch, it is
   like fleecy pattern finery;
in sitting-room the blue one seems
to smell of tangerines and pinery.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

(Translated from the Russian

by Alec Vagapov)

   1928

For crazy lighting gatherings I care
more hopelessly and tenderly each day.
Most intricate deceptions are exposed there
by simple overhearing, in some way.

The symbol of debauch there is one:
a glass of wine, while virtue sews for charity.
The keenest eye will not find similarity
between the features of a mother and a son.

The rich man there, not alien to consolation,
carrying in his arms assiduously, so far,
Takes homeless women's children, with discretion,
wrapped up in plaid, to his tremendous car

They hastily write letters there at night:
it's danger... trepidation... with the hand
running across the sheet... How well they write!
How legible and clean, a real brand!

Here is the bedroom, all lit up. The shawl
has fallen down on the rug. My word!
The dazzling Jupiter cannot be seen at all
   the irritated stage director can't be heard;

but there's no blink of life in any of its corner:
the searching eyes of visitor cannot perceive
any relation between a thing and owner,
a special seal of worldly life we live.

Oh, yes! The races, waterfalls, rotation
of darkness in the mirror are all fine, it's true!
   But what about harmony? Invention?
The flight of thought? Oh, Muse, say, where are you?

It will destroy a villain, and marry a good creation,
And then again through centuries and places
there comes in haste the grand imagination
of self assured man, coarse and ungracious.

So that's the end... The piano is now dead,
its life was very short and viewless.
The world has woken up, and now instead
of melted fib it offers noise and coolness.

The executer with his lady friend as such,
facing the force of blowing humid air,
holding his palm over the burning match,
pronounces the mocking verdict there.

Sonnet

   почудится отеческий очаг;

The road is speeding like a dream. Behind
the mountain top the moon is rising.
I should compare my racer, no surprising,
with rolling thunder, in my mind.

Before the flesh became the larvae of a fly
beneath that little hill, I have an urge to hear
the way the ashes change to weeping silver here under the frenzied tire. I wonder where I

squeezing the wheel, resilient and bending
drive at full speed? Outside an alpine dwelling
I will imagine my sweet home;

now stepping on it I shall be driving homeward.
my foot will penetrate the cone
and, turning gear stick archways, I will move forward.

THE EXPRESS

(Translated from the Russian

by Alec Vagapov)

At night the murky railway station seems
to be as solemn and as void as temple
but now up in the distance, tremble
slid all the way along two iron beams
that ran ahead and met far in the dark of lines
and then there was a click of glowing signs
and in the depth of black a ruby could be seen
followed by a stripe of amber, and a din,
a mighty din of iron with reverberation
from abyss, from the moonlit night it flew into the station,
as if it were rolling up from ledge to ledge.

It sighed and stopped: a few doors opened here
The carriages, extended to give the train an edge,
were painted hazel. On lusterless veneer
over the windows are golden words in French
like a carved rhyme they tease my deep distress
with secret call...Meanwhile dark shadow patterns
slide after shadow along the limpid curtains.
   Substantially hiding the partition passes
the leather folds over the carriage fasteners.
   It's outburst, all blissful tension,
   extremely concentrated, with emotion,
   consumed with greed,
   and all in motion
the huge and living engine trembles on the track,
the steam is hot and beats in veins of iron,
the oil is leaking drop by drop along the line
from monstrous glossy wheels into the dark.

A moment later they started moving forward,
the buffers started thundering again,
and the extended carriages rolled onward
into the yawning well of darkness... Then
the station soon forgot their ringing
as well as their magic and their tremble
and now again under its domes, like at beginning,
it was as solemn and as empty as in temple.

The war, which broke out then, not only became the turning point in world history and not only changed the political map of Europe but also the way of life itself.

TO YOUNG CENTURY

(Translated from the Russian

by Alec Vagapov)

   1914

   It's thirteen now! Quite recently
We welcomed greeting it with love.
   At thirteen, wilfully and boldly
It showed its nature well enough.

Again, your day of birth is coming...
You vicious naughty boy! For once
Do not expect either good wishes
   Or great festivities from us.

And if the dear land of ours
Used to be burnt and poured with blood,
Do you, Young one, really have to
Act like your father and granddad?

They're different. For you know better.
You are fated to a different thing.
And yet somehow our new wine "sherry"
You pour into the old wineskin.

Do you repent and cry? No words!
"I'm waiting - says the world, - I mean,
You'd better leave the bloody roads
At least when you are fifteen!"

Impressionism

   1932

   The artist's work delineates
Dead faint of lilac shrub for us
He put, like crusts, upon the canvass
   Reverberating sounds of paints

He knows what oil is worth indeed:
Its summer, parched and under strain,
Warmed up with lilac tint of brain
   Extended to the stuffy heat.

The lilac shade is growing richer,
A whistle or a whip fades like a match:
You'll say that it's a cook as such
   Preparing pigeons in the kitchen.

You can divine there a swing
And an unfinished veil of brown,
And in this sunny big breakdown
A bumblebee acts as the king.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN

(Translated from the Russian

by Alec Vagapov)

   Charlie Chaplin
             comes from silver screen.
   Two shoe soles,
   the cleft lip grin,
A pair of peepers,
              full of ink,
With an amazing
   force of blink.
   Charlie Chaplin,
two shoe soles, out of date,
   cleft lip grin
   and miserable fate.
We all live at variance, in disgrace -
                              we're strangers, strangers.
With stannic horror
   on his face,
He cannot any longer
   hold his head.
Shoe polish  minces,
   soot walks ahead,

   Chaplin says quietly:
   " I wonder why :
   They love and praise me,
   and even glorify?
   And so the great highway
                          leads him to strangers, strangers.
Now, Charlie Chaplin,
              step on it, be quick,
Chaplin, rabbit,
          force your way to role.
Peel oranges,
                put on your roller skates,
Your spouse is a shadow,
   the blindest of all shades.
   Meanwhile the alien distance
   plays a trick.

Why has he got that tulip,
   who can say?
Why is the crowd so endearing all the way?
   Well, because
   it's Moscow, after all.
   Charlie, Charlie -
you should run risks to reach your goal.
   .You've hung your head,
   and it's wrong timing.

Your bowler is as good as ocean,
   And Moscow is so close,
the road, the road is worth of loving.

 Let poets grumble,
                   and splutter  playing pipers,
And let them curl their lips
   like vipers.
   With a pure heart,
   I shout
   about
   What socialism can't do without.

"The floor I live on
   doesn't matter, I should say, -
   conveniences
   is what I need.
   I want, dear comrades,
   to live the way
   the bourgeois
   and masters did.
I'm not a thrush for you,
   comrades,
   nor a tit,
   I have got
   things to do,
   a whole mass.
I want to rise
   high up in life, indeed,
   as it befits
   the ruling class.
   I come from lowest class,
   I've had enough.
   I hate
   to beg in dirt,
   like all of us.

   Comrades, I'd rather live
      high up above,
   right by the side of
   Solar
   Prominence.

We are neither horses,
    comrades,
                        nor children, really,
 Riding a horse
   with load,
   you said?!
    In short, -
            you'd better firstly,
                  secondly
                            and thirdly, -
provide me
   with a lift instead.

   Instead of lift,
     somehow I've got
   to hop and jump -
   they'd better wait!
 On the white wall
   somebody wrote

   In scrawls: " The lift
          WON'T
   operate!"
Likewise,
   a lot of thing
  are just disgusting.
   Say, primus stoves!
  Make way to gas!
 And after work
   get washed
   at once.
Run, lift,
   run, master of deception!
   Let's build
                 material base,
   taking a chance,
 for brand-new
           socialist relations".

  Let poets grumble,

BEAUTIES

( Meditation on the opening of Opera House)

1929
   Slipped into dinner jacket,
                             perfectly shaved,
I am
   at Opera House,
   like a grandee.
   During the interval
   I see
   a lot of beauties. Great!
   My disposition melted,
   I like it here,
   really.
   The waists
   are cups,
   The nails
   are glossy,
   The painted lips,
   are Houbigant rosy.
    The retouch
   shadows
   the blue of the eyes,
   the backs are
   the blossom of salmon,
   so nice.
   Dropping
         from height,
the trains
   sweep
   the floor.
   Keep off, poets,
   such beauty,
   for you it's a bore.
   As she turns her rear
you'll see diamonds in her ear.
   As she playfully stirs,
   on the breast
   chinchilla
   reveals
   white purls.
   The dress
   is like fluff.
   You won't breathe, I bet.
   Even old walrus
   is seen
   dressed up in faille
   and crЙpe de Chine.
   Only the cloud
   is crЙpe Georgette.
   The brooches glitter ...
                  now there you are! -
   from half-naked dress
   you get.
But it would be best
   if, along with the dress,
   she had also
   a head.

The Birth of Futurism

   1912

One day an artist wearing cotton pants
Sat down on the palette unwittingly,
He jumped up rapidly as if attacked by ants:
"Where is the turpentine? I'll wipe this off immediately"

But looking carefully at the bright cascade
in an intuitive creative trance of tremor
He cut a square from canvass and
Set up... a "Donkey Skin" saloon". Don't murmur!

В метро

Sasha Chorny

In the Underground

   1930

   In a glass box
One hundred different souls
   Have huddled up by chance.
They are coming in and going out,
As if the rock, with the aimless hand,
Were scattering from the horn of life:
Talks, smiles, the sparkling eyes,
Amusing mimicry of children.
A Frenchman, negro, granny, little boy,
An artist with a folder, a businessman with notepad,
And all this common swarm of faceless crowd,
   Those only differing in hats...
Just merged for a few minutes in a booming stream,
As if in nucleus, we're flying into space.
And only courtesy - a tested mask -
Unites us all with general indifference.
But hunger grumbles, the eyes keep looking,
   Stubbornly searching, searching... Nonsense!
It's time for you, man, to calm down,
Cool off and shrink ,
And be a stately European soul.

A parish priest, good soul, with a big head,
A man from province, with duck-like feet,
Is sitting in the corner in dull cloth.
   His pupils, like unyielding nails,
Emit a gleam of light through us in rays
   and shimmer far ahead,
His lips are whispering the lines
Of the habitual sacred words ...
That's how he walks across the square
   Opening the book of prayer,
   Quietly, like a somnambulist,
   Through stream of cars
He whispers, prays, and asks -
All for his soul,
And all for his salvation ...
While angels, clinging to his elbows,
Invisibly protect him from the drivers.

Oh Lord, from depths of underground
I will not beg of You for just myself ...
My soul is lazy and unconcerned,
While You have many other cares:
Up there above the tunnel, the dance of worlds goes on.
But the complexity of celestial mechanics
Is dazed with the rebellious pain
Of your unhappy wingless creature ...
But if it's ever possible,
And if You ever hear me,
I'll ask for just one thing :
Give just one piece of happiness on earth,
To this here boy from the hotel
   Dressed in a ridiculous short jacket;
To the old messenger with a piece of cardboard,
And to the gloomy negro in a shabby coat;
To the meek artist over here
Pensively sucking lozenge;
And as for me, the last one, pray, light up
With merry rollick this summertime, at least ...
You know, each day it's getting ever harder
To live upon this earth of Yours.

Y. Galitsinsky, M.Maksimov

The BLUE KERCHIEF

   1940

   My simple little blue kerchief
Fell down my gown in plaits.
You said that you would never forget me
   Nor our wonderful dates.

   It wasn't right
That we should have parted that night...
   No nights over here!
Where are you, my dear,
My kerchief, my love, my delight?

I cannot forget how that evening
You took off your kerchief, and then
You bid farewell and promised as well
Too keep it till we meet again.

   And though to-night
My sweetheart is out of my sight,
It's my persuasion: with love and affection
You keep the blue scarf by your side.

   Reading your lovable letters
I hear your voice full of life.
Between the lines I see the signs
Of kerchief that's real and live.

   And day and night
Your image calls me to fight,
And no surprise, with your loving eyes
You're always with me, by my side.

   So many beloved precious kerchiefs
We carry in greatcoats with us!
   Delicate speeches, girls' nice features,
   Are here, before our eyes.

   Taking his chance
   For our adorable ones
Shoot, machine gunner, for the kerchief that honey
   Had on her shoulders once.

THROUGH THE MAGIC
DEVICE OF LEEUWENHOEK

   1948

   Through Leeuwenhoek's magic devices
On a water drop like unalive
Our science discovered
   Some traces of amazing life.

The country of deaths and birthdays
Is the infinite link of a chain,-
In this world of miraculous findings
So trifling it is and so vain!

But for depths with meteors flying
There are no things like large and small,
Likewise, for microbes, humans and planets
There are not any bounds at all.

   Their common endeavours result in
The flare up of flame of Pleiads
So the flight of the comets is lighter,
And the galaxies are better fliers.
   .
In the corner of low-lying universe,
Under glass of the office's scheme
The mysterious strong will of fortune
Moves the same old unchangeable stream.

I can feel the smell of the stars and
Hear the talk of organic mass
   And impetuous noise of creation
So familiar to any of us.

THE SCOOTER

   1960

I really envy you the flight of wheels
oh, scooter, the colour of a rose, so pleasing!
I watch it, I and cannot stop my tears
which fall in summer, for no reason

The girl who sits behind the rider clings
onto to him smiling fatally, and carefree,
must think I am a sluggish bending snail
pressing itself onto a green leaf of tree

Farewell! Your way lies high up over me
and fades away there in distant greenery.
Two skies, two rainbows and two flames, as I can see,
are burning in your knees, you shameless girlie.

Your body shines beneath your coat
like a thin stem through glass and water.
All of a sudden an awkward whimper, like a shot,
flits out of me to freedom, for a wonder,

Your feeble voice resounds in such a way,
the tune is simple flying to infinity.
Your joyous flight, however, I should say,
   is balanced with my immobility.

Your swing is high, and there's no chance
   of feeling giddy, in consideration
that on the other side, for once,
   I move in opposite direction.

While peace and quiet falls on me,
in distant pools resounds your noise.
And while my step is hard, I see
you raise two small green wings of yours.

Sweep past, while I am standing still!
Keep babbling, while I am keeping silence!
With all my heart and all my weight I will
repent myself for your celestial lightness.

The Telephone

The female voice resounsing in the phone is
So unexpected, brave and fresh, -
There are so many honeyed harmonies
In this sweet voice, without a flesh!

Happiness, your step is so propitious,
And you do do not go past, just making good:
Even on the phone you sound auspicious,
   Clearer than seraphime's sweet lute.

In the Limousine

She got into the Limousine in her fine attire
Feigning a thrill in her consistent friend, a dear,
And in the crunch of dancing rubber tyre
She had restored the voice of Cavalier.

Who called her on the stairs saying "Manon"?
And though she had flung out: "mais non",
Whose hands had helped her, after all,
To put on fur-line shoes, in the cool entrance hall?

Well, it was he, as empty as a chanticleer,
A man in tail coat, combed, with no defect if any,
For many he is a desirable boy friend, such a dear,
A handsome man that has been used by many.

Oh, woman, call him on a tournИe!
Your private room would be the best by far...
But never ever take him to Massenet:
Massenet's "La lettre" isn't for guitar!

   ON THE ISLANDS
In motor landau, a gorgeous landau,
I drive across the isles for once,
Drunk with the face of outlander
Amid those ladies and "these" ones.

I searched for fairy in every "fairy",
I used to do it, now I do not.
But why do I get inflamed and scary
   When seeing a lady's overcoat?

   How unrequited! How undoubted!
Oh how indecent! Pain for all!
It's thick in groves, in alleys - scattered,
   In every dandy lives Rocambole.

What is so charming here? What's repugnant?
The night is shameless and in a plight.
Whom should I cast retort, imprudent?
Whom should gently set the bow right?

   A PICTURE DRAWN IN NEEDLE

You'll see a chestnut harpsichord
   And the reflection in trumeau
Of sister cousin's little figure
   Twittering pieces of Rameau...

The rocking chair in the corner
   Is lighter than Diderot's construct.
There's a withered violet on it
Which shedded blossoms for the heart.

The melted candles sting the forehead,
Just like the shoulders sting the rose.
The window opens to the garden
And heliotrope from the green spot flows.

All notes are in the fog of tears,
   Appearing like a silver claw...
And the girl's heart is in the novel
   Read furtively the day before.

A Dream in the Village

   A pretty burring coquette
Prancing gracefully on horseback .
Wearing a bugle beads aigrette -
Is on a Mediterranean track.

There came along a prancing man,
Viscount, slightly grizzled one,
An athlete, fencer, and not bad at that,
Driving the whole of beau-monde mad.

With ermine boa around her neck,
She starts a tickling light flirtation,
   And snow-white seagulls at daybreak
   Splash the resort with condemnation.

The king of foil is calling her
For a cup, with tangerines or so,
And special laughter with a burr
Is softly checked with fluffy boa...

The Romance of Scarlet Shoes

The red satin shoes were placed on the table, when playing host,
But they rose from the table and to the lips gently pressed
Shoemaker, the artist, had made them, and the engineer began to boast.
The red satin shoes were tickling the eyes of the guests.
   Red satin shoes, you are like nacelles;
Do you remember the temperature of the exigent foot?
Ibrahim only knows the amount of mind and money the sellers
Have paid for you, red satin shoes, so good.

Red satin shoes with smoke-coloured rabbit fur, thereafter
You would temptingly bask in hands, be buried in rugs, and all.
Now you would stamp your foot, now burst into laughter,
Now be carried on platters when they had a ball.

You would eat spicy truffles, swim in champagne,
Give a slap on the face and fly on a plane,
Oh, red satin shoes! Oh, red satin shoes!
You whose heels are for elders! You whose toes are for youth!

At
the Premiere

Covering her wish with the sail of reverie
   Flashing with a frutescent lavaliere
The countess struck the puzzled chevalier
With an ostrich fan, like a referee.

The orchestral pink tune began to fly
Over the white and velvet foyer.
The countess, with the grace of a dragonfly,
Took a bite of the chocolate "Cailler".

The glittering audience looked fussy and solemn
In tailcoats and dИcolletИ dresses that night.
The next day, in the review of society column
They would highlight a splendid squeal of delight.

The Overture

Champagne and pineapples! Pines in champagne!
Amazingly tasty, sparkling, spicy and plain!
I've got something of Norway! I've got something of Spain!
I'm fiercely inspired! I'm taking my pen!

The running of cars! The rattle of planes!!
The wings of the gliders! The whistle if trains!
Some have been covered with kisses! While others are beaten.
The pulse of parties is champagne in pineapples!

Amid nervous girls, in the circle of ladies again,
I turn tragic life into dreams and a farce...
Champagne and pineapples! Pines in champagne!
From Moscow - in Nagasaki ! New York - on Mars !

Life slowly moved like a mature fortune teller
   Mysteriously whispering forgotten words.
I sighed, regretting something, loss, or failure,
My head was filled with dreams of other worlds.

As I approached the fork I stopped to stare
At the serrated forest by the road.
By force of some volition , even there
The heaven seemed to be a heavy load.

And I remembered the untold and hidden reason
For captured power of youth and captured hopes,
While up ahead the fading day of season,
Was gilding the serrated verdure tops...

Spring, tell me, what do I regret? What failure?
What are the dreams that come into my head?
My life, like a mature fortune teller,
Is whispering the words I did forget.

As I was growing old and fading,
A poet, used to streaks of grey,
I wanted to postpone the ending
The aged men should face some day.

A sickly man, a puny creature,
I'm looking for a lucky star,
And in my senile dreams I picture
A lovely image, now so far.

   Perchance I have forgotten something,
   I don't believe in such a lie.
   This tremor has aroused nothing.
I'm neither moved nor touched. Not I!

These old time silly tales and stories
   Have fascinated me somehow,
But I've been bowed by age and worries,
   It's funny, I am a poet now...

I don't believe in books and omens
Of silly men of our times!
Damn all those dreams! Damn all those moments
   Of my prophetic doggerel rhymes!

So here I am, alone and lonely
   An angry man, decrepit, sick...
I stretch my hand and with a quandary
Bend down to pick my walking stick...

Whom should I trust? Whom should I doubt?
Those doctors, poets, priests and all...
If only I could join a crowd
And learn to be a trivial soul!

I while away my reckless life,
My life, extremely dull and sombre,
Now I rejoice, restrained and sober,
Now I shed tears, sing and strive.

But if one day I am to die?
What if behind me, stands the visage,
Which covers mirror, like an image,
With his enormous hand? Oh my!

The mirror light will flash and burn,
I'll close my eyes in trepidation
And I'll retreat to destination
From where no one will return...

My friend, you'll understand, of course!
Now at this hour of dejection
   Like magic, firmly, desperation
   Dismays me filling with remorse...

Why is there so much depression
And pain in my contracted chest?
   I don't need lights, and I confess
   I'm tired of any congregation.

Those waiting for the Lord, with bias...
The thing they find is just the devil...
They are despaired by the revel
   Of Satan always telling lies...

   Those showing mercy gentle-willed
   And wounding others willy-nilly...
Or should we stop attempting, really,
For ailment is the only shield?

Alexander Blok

The Kite

High up, above the sleepy world,
The kite flies round drawing circles
   And watching the deserted wold.
At home the mom her sunny suckles:
"Now take it, suck the breast, be good,
Grow, bear your cross of babyhood".

The years fly over, full of drama
   With wars and villages aflame,
But you, my land, are much the same
   In all antiquity and glamour.
When will the mother stop deploring?
When will the kite give over hovering?
