Arthur O"Shaughnessy "An Epic of Women" V. THE DAUGHTER OF HERODIAS-1.

1: MY heart is heavy for each goodly man
2: Whom crowned woman or sweet courtezan
3: Hath slain or brought to greater shames than death.
4: But now, O Daughter of Herodias!
5: I weep for him, of whom the story saith,
6: Thou didst procure his bitter fate :-Alas,
7: He seems so fair !-May thy curse never pass!

  8: Where art thou writhing? Herod's palace-floor
  9: Has fallen through: there shalt thou dance no more;
10: And Herod is a worm now. In thy place,
11: -Salome, Viper !-do thy coils yet keep
12: That woman's flesh they bore with such a grace?
13: Have thine eyes still the love-lure hidden deep,
14: The ornament of tears, they could not weep?

15: Thou wast quite perfect in the splendid guile
16: Of woman's beauty; thou hadst the whole smile
17: That can dishonour heroes, and recal
18: Fair saints prepared for heaven back to hell:
19: And He, whose unlived glory thou mad'st fall
20: All beautiful and spotless, at thy spell,
21: Was great and fit for thee by whom he fell.

22: O, is it now sufficing sweet to thee-
23: Through all the long uncounted years that see
24: The undistinguished lost ones waste away-
25: To twine thee, biting, on those locks that bleed,
26: As bled they through thy fingers on that day?
27: Or hast thou, all unhallowed, some fierce need
28: Thy soul on his anointed grace to feed?

29: Or hast thou, rather, for that serpent's task
30: Thou didst accomplish in thy woman-mask,
  31: Some perfect inconceivable reward
32: Of serpent's slimy pleasure ?-all the thing
33: Thou didst beseech thy master, who is Lord
34: Of those accursed hosts that creep and sting,
35: To give thee for the spoil thou shouldest bring?

36: He was a goodly spoil for thee to win!
  37: -Men's souls and lives were wholly dark with sin;
38: And so God's world was changed with wars and gold,
39: No part of it was holy; save, maybe,
40: The desert and the ocean as of old:-
41: But such a spotless way of life had he,
42: His soul was as the desert or the sea.

  43: I think he had not heard of the far towns;
  44: Nor of the deeds of men, nor of kings' crowns;
45: Before the thought of God took hold of him,
46: As he was sitting dreaming in the calm
47: Of one first noon, upon the desert's rim,
48: Beneath the tall fair shadows of the palm,
49: All overcome with some strange inward balm.

50: But then, so wonderful and lovely seemed
51: That thought, he straight became as though he dreamed
52: A vast thing false and fair, which day and night
53: Absorbed him in some rapture-very high
54: Above the common swayings of delight
55: And general yearnings, that quite occupy
56: Men's passions, and suffice them till they die:

57: Yea, soon as it had entered him-that thought
58: Of God-he felt that he was being wrought
  59: All holy: more and more it filled his heart;
60: And seemed, indeed, a spirit of pure flame
61: Set burning in his soul's most inward part.
62: And from the Lord's great wilderness there came
63: A mighty voice calling on him by name.

64: He numbered not the changes of the year,
65: The days, the nights, and he forgot all fear
66: Of death: each day he thought there should have been
67: A shining ladder set for him to climb
68: Athwart some opening in the heavens, e'en
69: To God's eternity, and see, sublime-
70: His face whose shadow passing fills all time.

71: But he walked through the ancient wilderness.
72: O, there the prints of feet were numberless
73: And holy all about him! And quite plain
74: He saw each spot an angel silvershod
75: Had lit upon; where Jacob too had lain
76: The place seemed fresh,-and, bright and lately trod,
77: A long track showed where Enoch walked with God.

78: And often, while the sacred darkness trailed
79: Along the mountains smitten and unveiled
80: By rending lightnings,-over all the noise
81: Of thunders and the earth that quaked and bowed
82: From its foundations-he could hear the voice
83: Of great Elias prophesying loud
84: To Him whose face was covered by a cloud.

85: Already he was shown so perfectly
86: The awful mystic grace and sanctity
87: Of all the earth, there was no part his feet
  88: With sandal covering might dare to tread;
89: Because that in it he was sure to meet
90: The fair sword-bearing angels, or some dread
91: Eternal prophet numbered with the dead.

92: So he believed that he should purify
93: His body, till the sin of it should die,
94: And the unfailing spirit and great word
95: Of One-who is too bright to be beheld,
96: And in his speech too fearful to be heard
97: By mortal man-should come down and be held
98: In him as in those holy ones of eld.

99: And to believe in this was rapture more
100: Than any that the thought of living bore
101: To tempt him: so the pleasant days of youth
  102: Were but the days of striving and of prayer;
103: And all the beauty of those days, forsooth,
104: He counted as an evil or a snare,
105: And would have left it in the desert there.

106: Ah, spite of all the scourges that had bit
107: So fiercely his fair body, branding it
  108: With many a painful over-written vow
109: Of perfect sanctity-what man shall say
110: How often, weak with groanings, he would bow
111: Before the angels of the place, and pray
112: That all his body might consume away?

113: For through whole bitter days it seemed in vain
114: That all the mighty desert had no stain
115: Of sin around him; that the burning breaths
116: Went forth from the eternal One, and rolled
117: For ever through it, filling it with deaths,
118: And plagues, and fires; that he did behold
119: The earthquakes and the wonders manifold:

Arthur O"Shaughnessy An Epic of Women V.DAUGHTER OF IRODIAS-2
  120-238

120: It seemed in vain that all the place was bright
121: Ineffably with that unfading light
  122: No man who worketh evil can abide;
123: That he could see too with his open eyes
124: Fair troops of deathless ones, and those that died
125: In martyrdoms, or went up to the skies
126: In fiery cars-walk there with no disguise ;-

127: It seemed in vain that he was there alone
128: With no man's sin to tempt him but his own;-
129: Since in his body he did bear about
130: A seeming endless sin he could not quell
131: With the most sharp coercement, nor cast out
132: Through any might of prayer. O, who can tell-
133: Save God-how often in despair he fell?

  134: The very stones seemed purer far than he;
135: And every naked rock and every tree
136: Looked great and calm, composed in one long thought
137: Of holiness; each bird and creeping thing
138: Rejoiced in bearing some bright sign that taught
139: The legend of an ancient minist'ring
140: To some fair saint of old there sojourning.

141: Yea, all the dumb things and the creatures there
142: Were grand, and some way sanctified; most fair
143: The very lions stood, and had no shame
144: Before the angels; and what time were poured
145: The floods of the Lord's anger forth, they came
146: Quite nigh the lightnings of the Mount and roared
147: Among the roaring thunders of the Lord:

148: Yet He-while in him day by day, divine,
149: The clear inspired thought went on to shine,
150: And heaven was opening every radiant door
151: Upon his spirit-He, in that fair dress
152: Of weak humanity his senses bore,
153: Did feel scarce worthy to be there, and less
154: Than any dweller in the wilderness.

  155: Wherefore his limbs were galled with many a stone;
156: And often he had wrestled all alone
157: With their fair beauty, conquering the pride
158: And various pleasure of them with some quick
159: And hard inflicted pain that might abide,-
160: Assailing all the sense with constant prick
161: Until the lust or pride fell faint and sick.

162: Natheless there grew and stayed upon his face
  163: The wonderful unconquerable grace
  164: Of a young man made beautiful with love;
165: Because the thought of God was wholly spread
166: Like love upon it; and still fair above
167: All crowned heads of kings remained his head
168: Whereon the halo of the Lord was shed.

169: Ah, how long was it, since the first red rush
170: Of that surpassing thought made his cheek blush
171: With pleasure, as he sat-a tender child-
172: And wondered at the desert, and the long
173: Rough prickly paths that led out to the wild
174: Where all the men of God, holy and strong,
175: Had dwelt and purified themselves-how long ?-

176: Before he rose up from his knees one day,
  177: And felt that he was purified as they;
178: That he had trodden out the sin at last,
179: And that the light was filling him within?
180: How many of the months and years had past
181: Uncounted ?-But the place he was born in
182: No longer knew him: no man was his kin.

183: O then it was a most sweet, holy will
184: That came upon him, making his soul thrill
185: With joy indeed, and with a perfect trust,-
186: For he soon thought of men and of the king
187: All tempted in the world, with gold and lust,
188: And women there, and every fatal thing,
189: And none to save their souls from perishing-

190: And so he vowed that he would go forth straight
191: From God there in the desert, with the great
192: Unearthliness upon him, and adjure
  193: The nations of the whole world with his voice;
194: Until they should resist each pleasant lure
195: Of gold and woman, and make such a choice
196: As his, that they might evermore rejoice.

197: Thus beautiful and good was He, at length,
198: Who came before King Herod in his strength,
199: And shouted to him with a great command
200: To purify himself, and put away
  201: That unclean woman set at his right hand;
202: And after all to bow himself and pray,
203: And be in terror of the Judgment Day!

204: He never had seen houses like to that
  205: Fair-columned, cedar-builded one where sat
206: King Herod. Flawless cedar was each beam,
207: Wrought o'er with flaming brass: along the wall
208: Great brazen images of beasts did gleam,
  209: With wondrous flower-works and palm trees tall;
210: And folded purples hung about it all.

211: He never had beheld so many thrones,
212: As those of ivory and precious stones
213: Whereon the noble company was raised
214: About the king:-he never had seen gems
215: So costly, nor so wonderful as blazed
216: Upon their many crowns and diadems,
217: And trailed upon their garments' trodden hems:

218: But he had seen in mighty Lebanon
  219: The cedars no man's axe hath lit upon;
220: And he had often worshipped, falling down
221: In dazzling temples opened straight to him,
222: Where One who had great lightnings for His crown
223: Was suddenly made present, vast and dim
224: Through crowded pinions of the Cherubim!

225: Wherefore he had no fear to stand and shout
226: To all men in the place, and there to flout
227: Those fair and fearful women who were seen
228: Quite triumphing in that work of their smile
229: To shame a goodly king. And he cast, e'en
230: A sudden awe that undid for a while
231: The made-up shameless visages of guile.

232: And when Herodias-that many times
233: Polluted one, assured now in all crimes
234: Past fear or turning-when she, her fierce tongue
235: Thrice forked with indignation, hotly spoke
236: Quick wild beseeching words, wherewith she clung
237: To Herod, praying him by some death-stroke
238: To do her vengeance there before all folk-

Arthur O"Shaughnessy An Epic of Women V.DAUGHTER OF IRODIAS-3
  239-364

239: Ah, spite of every urging that her hate
240: Did put into her lips,-so fair and great
241: Seemed that accuser standing weaponless,
242: Yet wholly terrible with his bright speech
243: As 'twere some sword of flaming holiness,
244: That no man dared to join her and beseech
245: His death; but dread came somehow upon each.

246: For he was surely terrible to see
247: So plainly sinless, so divinely free
248: To judge them; being in a perfect youth,
249: Yet walking like an angel in a man
250: Reproving all men with inspired truth.
251: And Herod himself spoke not, but began
252: To tremble: through his soul the warning ran.

253: -Then that Salome did put off the shame
254: Of her mere virgin girlhood, and became
255: A woman! Then she did at once essay
256: Her beauty's magic, and unfold the wings
257: Of her enchanted feet,-to have men say
258: She slew him-born indeed for wondrous things.
259: Her dance was fit to ruin saints or kings.

260: O, her new beauty was above all praise!
261: She came with dancing in shy devious ways,
262: And while she danced she sang.
263: The virgin bandlet of her forehead brake,
  264: Her hair came round her like a shining snake;
265: To loving her men's hearts within them sprang
266: The while she danced and sang.

267: Her long black hair danced round her like a snake
  268: Allured to each charmed movement she did make;
  269: Her voice came strangely sweet;
270: She sang, "O, Herod, wilt thou look on me-
271: Have I no beauty thy heart cares to see?"
272: And what her voice did sing her dancing feet
  273: Seemed ever to repeat.

274: She sang, "O, Herod, wilt thou look on me?
275: What sweet I have, I have it all for thee;"
276: And through the dance and song
277: She freed and floated on the air her arms
278: Above dim veils that hid her bosom's charms:
279: The passion of her singing was so strong
280: It drew all hearts along.

281: Her sweet arms were unfolded on the air,
282: They seemed like floating flowers the most fair-
  283: White lilies the most choice;
284: And in the gradual bending of her hand
  285: There lurked a grace that no man could withstand;
286: Yea, none knew whether hands, or feet, or voice,
287: Most made his heart rejoice.

288: The veils fell round her like thin coiling mists
289: Shot through by topaz suns, and amethysts,
  290: And rubies she had on;
291: And out of them her jewelled body came,
292: And seemed to all quite like a slender flame
293: That curled and glided, and that burnt and shone
294: Most fair to look upon.

295: Then she began, on that well-polished floor,
296: Whose stones seemed taking radiance more and more
297: From steps too bright to see,
298: A certain measure that was like some spell
299: Of winding magic, wherein heaven and hell
300: Were joined to lull men's souls eternally
  301: In some mid ecstasy:

302: For it was so inexplicably wrought
303: Of soft alternate motions, that she taught
  304: Each sweeping supple limb,
305: And in such intricate and wondrous ways
306: With bendings of her body, that the praise
307: Lost breath upon men's lips, and all grew dim
308: Save her so bright and slim.

309: And through the swift mesh'd serpents of her hair
310: That lash'd and leapt on each place white and fair
311: Of bosom or of arm,
312: And through the blazing of the numberless
313: And whirling jewelled fires of her dress,
314: Her perfect face no passion could disarm
  315: Of its reposeful charm.

316: Her head oft drooped as in some languid death
317: Beneath brim tastes of joy, and her rich breath
  318: Heaved faintly from her breast;
319: Her long eyes, opened fervently and wide,
320: Did seem with endless rapture to abide
321: In some fair trance through which the soul possest
  322: Love, ecstasy, and rest.

323: But lo-while each man fixed his eyes on her,
324: And was himself quite filled with the stir
325: His heart did make within-
326: The place was full of devils everywhere:
  327: They came in from the desert and the air;
328: They came from all the palaces of sin,
329: And each heart they were in:

330: They lurked beneath the purples, and did crawl
331: Or crouch in unseen corners of the hall,
  332: Among the brass and gold;
333: They climbed the brazen pillars till they lined
334: The chamber fair; and one went up behind
335: The throne of Herod-fearful to behold-
336: The Serpent king of old.

337: Yea, too, before those blinded men there went
338: Some even to Salome; and they lent
339: Strange charms she did not shun.
  340: She stretched her hand forth, and inclined her ear;
341: She knew those men would neither see nor hear:
342: A devil did support her head, and one
343: Her steps' light fabric spun.

344: O, then her voice with singing all unveiled,
345: In no trained timid accents, straight assailed
  346: King Herod's open heart:
347: The amorous supplication wove and wound
348: Soft deadly sins about it; the words found
349: Fair traitor thoughts there,-singing snakes did dart
350: Their poison in each part.

351: She sang, "O look on me, and look on Love:
352: We three are here together, and above-
353: What heaven may there be?
354: None for thine heart without this spell of mine,
355: Yea, this my beauty, yea, these limbs that shine
356: And make thy senses shudder; and for me,
  357: No heaven without thee!

358: "O, all the passion in me on this day
359: Rises into one song to sweep away
  360: The breakers of Love's bond;
361: For is it not a pleasant bond indeed,
362: And made of all the flowers in life's mead?
363: And is not Love a master fair and fond?
364: And is not Death beyond?

365: "O, who are these that will adjure thee, King,
366: To put away this tender flower-thing,
367: This love that is thy bliss?
368: Dost thou think thou canst live indeed, and dare
369: The joyless remnant of pale days, the bare
370: Hard tomb, and feed through cold eternities
371: Thy heart without one kiss?

372: "Dost thou think empty prayers shall glad thy lips
373: Kept red and living with perpetual sips
374: Of Love's rich cup of wine?
375: That thy fair body shall not fall away,
376: And waste among the worms that bitter day
377: Thou hast no lover round thy neck to twine
378: Fond arms like these of mine?

379: "I say they are no prophets,-very deaths,
380: And plagues, and rottenness, do use their breaths
  381: Who speak against delight;
382: Pale distant slayers of humanity
383: Have tainted them, and sent them forth to try
384: Weak lures to make man give up joyous right
385: Of days for empty night.

386: "I tell thee, in their wilderness shall be
387: No herbs enough for food for them and thee,
  388: No rock to give thee drink;
389: I tell thee, all their heavens are a cheat,
390: Or but a mirage to betray thy feet,
391: And draw thee quicker to some grave's dread brink
392: Where thou shalt fall and sink.

393: "Turn rather unto me, and hear my voice
394: Against these desert howlings, and rejoice:
395: Now surely do I crave
396: To treble this my beauty, and embalm
397: My words with deathless thrill, singing the psalm
398: Of pleasure to thee, King,-so I may save
399: Thy fair days from this grave.

400: "Yea, now of all my beauty will I strive
401: With these mad prophesiers till I drive
402: Their ravings from thine ear:
403: Against their rudeness I will set my grace,
  404: My softness, and the magic of my face;
405: And spite of all their curses thou shalt hear
406: And let my voice draw near:

407: "Against their loud revilings I will try
408: The long low-speaking pleadings of my sigh,
  409: All my heart's tender way;
410: Against their deserts-here, before thine eyes
411: My love shall open thee a paradise,
412: Where, if thou comest, thou shalt surely stay
413: And seek no better way:

414: "And rather than these haters of thy joy
415: Should anyhow allure thee to destroy
  416: Thy heart's prosperity,-
  417: O, I will throw my woman's arms entwined
418: About thy body; ere thy lips can find
419: One word of yielding, I will kiss them dry:
420: -And failing, let me die!

421: "But look on me, for it is in my soul
422: To make the measure of thy glory whole-
  423: With many goodly things
424: To crown thee, yea, with pleasure and with love,
425: Till there shall scarcely be a name above
426: King Herod's, in the mouth of one who sings
427: The fame of mighty kings:

428: "For see how great and fair a realm is this-
429: My untried love-the never conquered bliss
  430: All hoarded in my breast;
431: My beauty and my love were jewels meet
432: To make the glory of a king complete,
  433: And I,-O thou of kingship half-possest-
434: Can crown thee with the rest!

435: "I stand before thee-on my head the crown
436: Of all thou lackest yet in thy renown-
437: Ah, King, take this of me!
438: And in my hand I bear a brimming cup
439: That sparkles; to thine eyes I hold it up:
  440: A royal draught of life-long pleasure-see,
441: The wine is fit for thee!

442: "Ah, wilt thou pass me? Wilt thou let me give
443: Thy fair life to some meaner man to live?
  444: Nay, here-if I am sweet-
445: Thou shalt not. I will save thee with the sight
446: Of all my sweetness, save thee with the might
447: And charm of all my singing lips' deceit,
448: Or with my dancing feet.

449: "I have indeed some power. A lure lies
450: Within my tender lips-behind my eyes-
  451: Concealed in all my way;
452: And while I seem entreating, I compel,
453: Yea, while I do but plead, I use a spell-
454: Ah secretly-but surely. Who are they
  455: That ever turn away?

456: "Now, thou hast barely seen bright glittering
457: The gilded cup of pleasures that I swing
  458: Before thy reeling gaze,-
459: The deep beginnings of sweet drunkenness
460: Are in thy heart already, more or less,
461: And on thy soul deliciously there preys
462: A thirst no joy allays.

463: "Dost thou not feel, each time my long hair sweeps
464: The glowing floor, how through thy being creeps
465: A vague yet sweet desire?-
466: How writhes in every sense a tiny snake
467: Of pleasure biting till it seems to wake
468: A fever of sharp lusts that never tire,
  469: Unquenchable as fire?

470: "Is there not wrought a madness in thy brain
471: Each time my thin veils part and close again-
472: Each time their flying ring
473: Is seen a moment's space encircling me
474: With filmy changes-each time, rapidly
475: Rolled down, their cloud-like gauzes billowing
476: About my limbs they fling?

  477: "Ah, seek not in this moment some cold will;
478: Attend to no false pratings that would kill
479: Thy heart, and make thee fall:
480: But now a little lean to me, and fear
481: My charming. Ah, thy fame to me is dear!
482: Some wound of mine, when me thou couldst not call,
483: Might slay thee after all.

484: "For even while I sing, the unseen grace
485: Of Love descending hath filled all this place
  486: With most strong prevalence;
487: His miracle is raging in the breasts
488: Of all these men, and mightily he rests
489: On me and thee. His power is too intense,
490: No curse shall drive him hence.

Arthur O"Shaughnessy An Epic of Women V.Daughter of Herodias-5
  491-574

491: "-O, Love, invisible, eternal God,
492: In whose delicious ways all men have trod,
493: This day Thou truly hast
494: My heart: thy inspiration fills my tongue
495: With great angelic madness; I have sung
496: Set words that in my bosom thou hast cast-
497: Thine am I to the last!

498: "My feet are like two liquid flames that leap
499: For joy at thee; I feel thy spirit sweep-
500: Yea, like a southern wind-
  501: Through all the enchanted fibres of my soul;
502: I am a harp o'er which thy vast breaths roll,
503: And one day thou shalt break me: none shall find
504: A wreck of me behind.

505: "And now all palpitating, O I pray
  506: Thy utmost passion while I cry-away
  507: With all Love's enemies!
508: A man-borne up between the closing wings
509: Of two eternities of unknown things,
510: May catch this seraph charmer as he flies,
  511: And hold him till he dies;

512: "And yet some bitter ones, whom coming night
513: Hath wholly entered, grudge man this small right
514: Of joy, and seek to fill
515: His rushing moment with the monstrous hiss
516: Of shapeless terrors, poisoning the bliss
517: Brief nestled in his bosom-merely till
518: Forced out by its death chill!

519: "What voice is this the envious wilderness
520: Hath sent among us foully to distress
521: And haunt our lives with fear?
522: What vulture, shrieking on the scent of death-
523: What yelping jackal-what insidious breath
524: Of pestilence hath ventured to draw near,
  525: And enter even here?

526: "No kindred flesh of fair humanity
527: Yon fiend hath, seeking through lives doomed to die
  528: Death's foretaste to infuse:
529: His body is but raised up from the slain
530: Unburied thousands that long years have lain
531: About the desert: Death himself doth choose
532: His pale disguise to use.

533: "But, even though he be from some new God,
534: He shall not turn us who love's ways have trod,
535: Nor make us break love's vow.
536: Nay, rather, if a single beauty dwells
537: In me, if in that beauty there be spells
538: To win my will of any man-O thou,
539: King Herod, hear me now!-

540: "Let it be for his ruin! Ah, let me,
541: With all in me thou countest fair to see,
542: Procure this and no more!
543: If yet, with tender prevalence, my voice
544: May ask a thing of thee-this is my choice,
545: Though thou wouldst buy my sweets with all thy store-
546: This all I sell them for.

547: "Yea, are there lures of softness in my eyes?
548: My eyes are-for his death. Is my heart's prize
  549: A seeming fair reward?
  550: My virgin heart is-for his blood here shed;
  551: Its passion-for the falling of his head;
552: And on that man my kiss shall be outpoured
553: Who slays him with the sword!"

  554: Invisible-in supernatural haze,
555: Of shapes that seem not shapes to human gaze-
556: The devils were half awed as they did stand
557: Around her; each one in his separate hell
558: All inwardly was forced to praise her well:
559: And every man was fain to lose his hand
560: Or do all that sweet woman might command.

561: There was a tumult.-Cloven foot and scale
562: Of fiend with iron heel and coat of mail
563: Were rolled and hustled in the rage to slay
564: That fair young Saviour: when they murdered him
565: And brought his head, still beautiful-though dim
566: And drenched with blood-the aureole did play
567: Above it, slowly vanishing away.

568: I weep to think of him and his fair light
569: So quenched-of him thrust into some long night
570: Of unaccomplishment so soon, alas!
571: And Thou, who on that ancient palace floor
572: Didst dance, where dost thou writhe now evermore-
  573: Salome, Daughter of Herodias?
  574: O woman-viper-may thy curse ne'er pass!
