A Literary note on chapters 1-4 of the book by Jean-Louis Thiériot "Margaret Thatcher: "From the Grocery Store to the House of Lords"

A Literary note on chapters 1-4 of the book by Jean-Louis Thiériot "Margaret Thatcher: "From the Grocery Store to the House of Lords"

The chapters devoted to the childhood and youth of Margaret Thatcher (before Margaret Roberts' marriage) are read with interest. [Jean-Louis Thiériot, Margaret Thatcher, de l'épicerie à la Chambre des Lords] [Жан Луи Тьерио 'Маргарет Тэтчер: От бакалейной лавки до палаты лордов']

... a good daughter of the pastor ... She was even sent to preach in neighboring parishes. ... she performed along with the choir "The St Matthew Passion", the "Messiah" by Handel ... [translation here and further from the Russian text]

It follows from the book that father of Margaret Roberts was a religious figure, pastor of the Methodist Church, an intellectual, a man of self-education, a local elected politician.

The grocery store, owned by Alfred Roberts, was a source of income, but the shop did not determine the intellectual level and range of interests of the Roberts family.

The childhood and youth are followed by descriptions of Margaret Thatcher 's studies, party career, and family life. The presentation, it seems to us, is becoming more and more academic, the liveliness of the presentation is slightly lost.

Perhaps the author - the Frenchman - withholded some personal comments. ('The author expresses special gratitude to the officers, soldiers, sailors and pilots who in Dunkirk contributed to the loading of French troops on ships and allowed the grandfather of the author, officer of the 2nd Light Mechanized Division, to avoid the hardships of captivity.')

When describing childhood of Margaret Roberts, for example, the author of the book said: 'In childhood and adolescence Margaret did not notice a single trace of tenderness, next to her were a colorless sister, and father, who knew how to arouse her interest in many things, but who did not know what what caress was. She never had a sense of family involvement that was akin to the feelings of some kind of conspiracy." However, this statement by the author did not concern a British official of high level which Margaret Thatcher has become over time. ('But how hard was the life of the Methodists!')

("The Methodist Church is one of the branches that broke away from the Anglican Church. It was created by brothers John (1703-1791) and Charles (1707-1788) Wesley, pastors from Oxford. (...) ... the brothers joined a large number of British nonconformists: the Puritans, Presbyterians, Baptists, Pentecostals, Quakers, who made up about a third of the Christians of the kingdom. ')

As we read the book by Jean-Louis Thiériot, a name popped up in our memory: Oliver Cromwell. Not being a specialist in the history of Great Britain and the history of Cromwell, we looked into the encyclopedia.

'Cromwell strongly advocated ... for recruiting into [the army] those who would fight ... by conviction, and not as mercenaries. In search of such 'warriors of God," Cromwell addressed the Yeoman peasants of East England, convinced Puritans... ... this Cromwell's cavalry decided the success of the battles ... '

Cromwell's theme is certainly interesting. It is clear that the Yeomen peasants possessed those qualities that are the basis of successes and victories in all the times - religiosity, courage, hard work, perseverance and many other important positive qualities ...

Having written these lines, we checked and found that in the book by Jean-Louis Thiériot, in the subsequent text, there is a mention of the "Times" of February 3, 1988. Margaret Thatcher was depicted as a Lord Protector.

Let 's go back to a book written by Jean-Louis Thiériot.

Is the book easy to read (after description of Margaret Roberts' childhood and youth)?

Or does the presentation become academic? - The author of the book takes into account that the book is about a historical person, about a respected policy, about an official from among world leaders?

The book has many new (for the reader) interesting biographical details. Interest in the personality of Margaret Thatcher and in her life path encourages to continue reading the book ...
