Assistant in the layout of the bulletin. A story.
Publishing a bulletin involves various activities.
For example, before printing, the bulletin needs to be laid out.
Someone (who worked then) advised to hire a competent person with a layout experience.
It was a time when people were looking for any job with any salary.
Based on the recommendation, an employee (who had experience in the layout) was hired.
She really did have experience. She deftly knocked on the keys, the layout process went twice as fast as before. In addition, she became almost an informal leader in the team, and, it seemed, had a positive influence on the business atmosphere.
One day, I had to leave the office for half a day to meet with a specialist to resolve a certain issue.
Having learned about this, the assistant in the layout of the bulletin told me that she had a acquaintance - a specialist in the relevant field. She had known him for a long time, she communicated with him more or less regularly. He could solve the issue (to do the work) at a lower price, but with higher quality.
This option was convenient for me, since I was overloaded with the juridical problems of my clients.
A relationship of trust seemed much more convenient to me - compared to a formal one. Any detail can be clarified much easier and faster if there is an element of trust. And if difficulties arise - there is a recommender (a kind of intermediary, 'mediator'), who can be contacted, and who will help resolve the issue without unnecessary formalities!
I came to the specialist recommended to me by the assistant. The image of the recommender seemed to hover between us.
I had given (before the starting work) to the specialist (obviously sufficient) advance payment - it was clear from the situation that after the case would completed, the specialist would tell me about the costs and would return the overpaid amount - if an overpayment of the advance would be discovered.
It took several days to resolve the issue.
If I came on recommendation, then I am not a complete stranger person for the specialist. And, by the way, to create a friendly atmosphere, he involved me in some unnecessary for me conversations.
I did not attach much importance to these conversations, but I felt that the specialist did not like all of my statements.
The case was completed, and we parted.
My overload of my direct responsibilities prompted me to avoid unnecessary complications in the relationship - especially since there is an intermediary (recommender) through whom (related) issues can be resolved.
After thinking about the results of my appeal to the recommended specialist, I informed the assistant (as well as the recommender and intermediary) that I was not satisfied with some of the specialist's actions, and he did not report to me on the use of the advance transferred (by me) to him.
The assistant shrank in fear and did not answer anything.
She was hired to help with the layout of the bulletin, and not to recommend specialists, so no action was taken against her.
After some time, with a change in the general economic situation, this assistant did not show up for work after a long break (vacation? long weekends - holidays?).
I completed the necessary layout work without much difficulty.
Time passed. The absent assistant had previously been hired on recommendation.
During about two or three months (after her disappearance) - through her acquaintances who continued to work in the working team - she was given wishes, again and again, that she needed to come and to settle the formalities.
At last, she showed up. In her appearance - in some elements of her behavior and of her clothes - there was something from a circus clowns. For example, she was hung over (around) with several pagers and cell phones. Strange grimaces periodically (impulsively?) appeared on her face.
The formal issues were settled, and she switched to her own tasks.
I cannot collate this (received by me) experience with any recommendations from the literature on business success. I only remember a recommendation set out in one of the books, not to participate in holidays and country events held with the participation of the work team. But this recommendation can only have an indirect relation to the events I described above.
Even if she was a more or less useful assistant in in the layout of the bulletin for almost the entire period of cooperation, and only in the situation with the specialist acted as his agentess (in fact), this was not yet a reason to take any disciplinary measures against her.
Probably, the keys to solving problematic situations should be sought in psychology and in the behavior of other people.
