What are the sources of such a political tradition as self-immolation?

As a rule, self-immolations take place in the countries of the East. There is a high level of despotism, limited opportunities for public protest, efforts to defend oneself by appealing to law enforcement agencies, to court are ineffective.

In the USSR, the raw material pie played an important role. People inclined towards education and more or less complicated employment were in a relatively favorable position. The rest also got some crumbs from this pie.

In the post-Stalinist period, indulgent uncles and grandfathers were in power. It was important for them that the people did not get involved in politics. Those who did not go into politics, were treated without excessive cruelty ... They lived themselves, and gave others opportunity to live...

Of course, not all at once. Traditions of self-immolation developed in the East for a relatively long period ...

But gradually new realities are making their way.

Something of the same theme is observed in Belarus.

Why are participants in peaceful protests being repressed? - They walk along the carriageway and (allegedly) interfere with traffic [and modern official urbanistic policy does not impede traffic very much?] ... - And if they walk along sidewalks intended for pedestrians? If they just stand at the edge of the sidewalk with a piece of paper in their hands?

  In response - a pseudo-legal, a pseudo-law demagoguery.

So if today there was a conversation between political philosophers from Russia and from Belarus, they would have something to tell each other about ...
