Popovo-Lezhachi and the Soviet designer Viktor Fyodorovich Bolkhovitinov. An essay on geographical and historical associations.

Popovo-Lezhachi and the Soviet designer Viktor Fyodorovich Bolkhovitinov. An essay on geographical and historical associations.

Попово-Лежачи, Popovo-Lezhachi - this geographical name attracts attention with its unusual sound.

Popovo - more or less clear: this village may be related to the priest or to his descendants or to a person with the surname Popov.

Lezhachi - is probably pops (priests) or pop (priest), who are lying (that is, they are not moving)? Why is he or they lying? The reasons may be different.

  Unlikely!

We turn to the dictionary of Vladimir Dahl.

  "...road sleigh, deep sledge, bolkhovni".

The sleigh of the local priest gave the name to the settlement?

"Bolkhovni". Frankly, I had some interest in the origin of the name Bolkhovitinov - he was the head of one of the Soviet design bureaus (I wrote about him). He was a contemporary of Sergei Korolev - this, in part, determined my interest in the personality of Bolkhovitinov.

It is curious that the Soviet designer Bolkhovitinov Viktor Fedorovich had a namesake (distant or close relative?) - Metropolitan Evgeny - Bolkhovitinov Evfimy Alekseevich [1767, Voronezh - 1837, Kyiv], Russian historian, archeographer and bibliographer.

Dear Viktor Fedorovich is known. But he neither invented nor designed anything very significant. He lived his life without visible (for the public) dark periods in his biography. He was financially well-off and loved to sail on a yacht in the reservoir near Moscow - which was at that time an expensive and inaccessible form of recreation for 99.99 percent of the Soviet population. Let he could not design anything significant, for example, a spaceship. But if he had been given the task be busy with the sleigh, then perhaps he would have succeeded in something.

Voroshilov - how did he show himself (in a positive way)? During the course of the war, he was eventually sent to lead the Trophy Committee. Nevertheless, the ministers Vyshinsky, Vasilevsky, Voznesensky, the designer Korolev came and went, and the Lugansk locksmith Voroshilov continued to sit in the Kremlin office.

We return to the Dictionary of Vladimir Dal and to the word "Lezhachi".

"Lying service, ... local, sentry or garrison; ... homebody [military service]. It is very likely that the settlement was related to military service.

"... ore vein in a supine position. ... " Is there any mining industry near the settlement?

"...a lying hive, a deck with a swarm, laid obliquely, with its head on the trestles...." Apiary of a local priest?

"stormy, windbreak, a lying ["lolled"] forest." More than likely the origin of the name "Lezhachi" from some special ("lolled") forest.

So, we choose the most probable, in our opinion, option: the settlement was related to the "lying" (the "domestic") military service, and residents with the surname Popovs prevailed in it.

The origin of the name is very likely from some special (a lying ["lolled"]) forest.

Are there any mining enterprise near the settlement?

It's nice to think that the name "Lezhachi" ("Lyozhachi") is purely peaceful. That it is a the apiary of the local priest.

It is least likely that the name came from a recumbent priest or from recumbent priests. Even if the local priest for some reason lost the ability to move independently, such an event would not be the reason for the name of the settlement.

I give priority to the "military" origin of the geographical name.
