The Tariff Revolution creates an exceptionally complex reality with many mutually influencing causes and effects.
Should I write a huge economic work on this topic? What's the point (for me)? All the economic minds who are allowed into the official media field are talking with thoughtful look (for salary) something confusing. Let's say I will write a paper with a more or less extensive analysis of the situation. Practice shows that "committed" minds will get to know my thoughts and use them - and what will I get out of it?
I am refraining from the idea of receiving (to me personally) government funding intended for the Department of Economics of the Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation: after presenting such an idea several years ago, I received an invitation to come to St. Petersburg. At that time, the story of the most famous Russial historian who fell into one of the St. Petersburg canals was fresh. So I wasn't in a hurry with such trip.
For now, I will limit myself to just a small portion of my reflections on the economic topic, - reflections that will take me twenty-thirty-forty minutes to write.
What are the obvious results of the Tariff Revolution - of the comprehensive, systematic introduction of increased customs (trade) duty (duties) by the state?
One of the obvious consequences is that the state (into whose territory goods imposed by new increased duties are imported) receives additional financial resources.
Following this logic, we ask the question: how will these additional financial resources be used by the state-recipient?
The general public is not spoilt for details, but - anyway - we have learned that additional financial resources will be used to abolish the income tax. (It seems that there was a corresponding precedent, - during a relatively short historical period, the income tax did not exist, and the state received the necessary revenues through the collection of customs (trade) duties (dues)).
We follow the logic further. The state withdraws certain amounts of financial resources from the economic turnover (through the comprehensive, systematic introduction of increased customs (trade) duties). Further, the state distributes these financial resources among income taxpayers (among the general population) - income tax is either abolished "immediately" (at a time), - or it gradually decreases, and eventually becomes zero.
No additional efforts (labor, entrepreneurial ...) at the same time, income taxpayers do not carry out. That is, they become recipients of a kind of (economic) rent - a tariff (economic) rent.
If, with the existence of a currency that is a reserve one (worldwide currency), and with the possibility of additional (almost unlimited) money issuance (of the printing additional money), the population is the recipient of a kind of financial (economic) rent, - then the results of the Tariff Revolution (and with the abolition of income tax) - is a tendency for the population to receive another type of (economic) rent - a tariff (economic) rent.
So, if we follow this logic further - to an intermediate logical finish - the population is increasingly turning into a society of rentiers.
Naturally, reality is more complex. And a more complex analysis should touch on other aspects of reality.
But those twenty-thirty-forty minutes, the approximate time that I had set for an unpaid presentation of my economic thoughts, was over. So with that, I pay my respects and complete this essay.
