The Short Story about the second series "Ward No. 6"

The Short Story about the second series 'Ward No. 6'

Somehow Lenin, Stalin and Dzerzhinsky were busy after the meeting of the Council of People's Commissars. Has darkened. The engines started nearby.

  - Comrades! - Lenin speaks to associates, - A music of comrade Uritsky - a pleasant thing. But why don't we go to a cinema? There is the new film. "Chekhov" is called.

  - I support, - Stalin has said.

Dzerzhinsky has told nothing, has looked at Vladimir Ilyich attentively. But his face showed a positive attitude to the proposal.

They are walking to a cinema hall. Along the way, Lenin talks about his impression of the first reading of "Ward No. 6": "When I read this story in my youth in the evening, I was downright creepy, I could not stay in my room, I got up and went out. I had such feeling, precisely I am also locked in Ward No. 6".

Dzerzhinsky and Stalin have kept silent.

  Lenin continued:

  - "Ward No. 6" is devoted to an intellectual, deprived of prospects, "an excess person", whom the powerless dissatisfaction with the environment and conditions or results in embitternment, grumbling or forces to fall, passively to capitulate"!

Lenin on memory has quoted several sentences:

  - "The inspector, the housekeeper and the paramedic plundered patients, and about the old doctor, the predecessor Andrey Efimych, told as if he was engaged in secret sale of hospital alcohol and has gathered for himself the good harem from nurses and sick women". "Having examined hospital, Andrey Efimych has come to conclusion that this institution is immoral and is extremely unhealthy for inhabitants". "He has arrived to the city without penny of money, with a small small suitcase and with the young ugly woman, whom he calls his cook".

  Lenin stressed:

  - The doctor, comrades, himself became the patient of Ward No. 6!

Have come to a cinema hall. Have turned off the light. Began the film. The movie was biographic. Chekhov's parents, the city of Taganrog, the Greek school, then the gymnasium. And so on.

Suddenly Edmund Dzerzhinsky, the father of Felix Edmundovich, appears on the screen. Edmund Dzerzhinsky teaches to Anton a mathematics. Chekhov looks at the teacher carefully, as if thinking: "Who is he? And from where he?". "Not a usual man for Taganrog!" Chekhov goes past the teacher's desk and sees: a stack of books. Among the books: Daniel Defoe "Robinson Crusoe".

Chekhov independently has found this book. Reads. Attentively looks at the teacher.

Naturally, the plot of the film moves further.

Chekhov becomes a doctor. Hospital. In hospital, naturally, - a disorder. The audience has focused. The plot culmination! Ward No. 6!

But Chekhov switches from cares on hospital at a literary creativity. Improves the own financial position. Trip to Sakhalin. The travels to abroad. The purchase of a manor. The literary glory. The house in the Crimea. Olga Knipper-Chekhova.

A little unexpected, of course, the turn of the plot if to compare with "Ward No. 6".

The movie comes to the end with the short plot about young Lenin. Evening. Young Lenin has read "Ward No. 6" and says: "really terribly! I have a feeling, precisely I am also locked in Ward No. 6". And young Lenin after these words leaves the room.

A lighting was turned on. Lenin is silent. Stalin and Dzerzhinsky are silent too.

  - Yes, we have constructed an unusual events! - Lenin has said at last. - The peace Treaty of Brest-Litovsk! The "Military communism"! The 'New Economic Policy'! Yes - and-and ...

  Lenin has requested to Dzerzhinsky:

  - Why your father, Edmund Dzerzhinsky, wrote nothing? Maybe I would have read his works directly, - together with Daniel Defoe? Without "Ward No. 6"?

  Felix Edmundovich sighed:

  - Literary talents were - were presented. I myself possess a hereditary craving for a literature. But the family was large, the historical era - a crisis, and a literary earnings - a risky thing for a large family. Children were brought up. Generally, has been occupied by the family, family affairs.

  Then Lenin said to Stalin:

  - We, Joseph Vissarionovich, all read "Ward No. 6".

Stalin has nodded in reply in agreement.

  - But, if to judge by the film, the extra person, the provincial young man, the son of the ruined dealer, of the owner of grocery store, the graduate of medical faculty of the Moscow university has switched to literature, has improved his financial position, has bought a manor, was much travelling and to abroad, and across Russia, at last, has lodged in the Crimea. He became a very close to theatrical cultural circles.

I have watched this film, and at me, - after the Kronstadt mutiny, - such feeling, precisely I am locked in Ward No. 6!

  Stalin and Dzerzhinsky were silent.

  Lenin was silent too.

  At last Lenin has said:

  - Joseph Vissarionovich! I propose to appoint Felix Edmundovich on position of the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the National Economy (SSNE)!

  - If we will assign Felix Edmundovich the Chairman of the SSNE, we will be manage to solve the problem of the Sakhalin, - Stalin said.

Lenin has looked with some surprise at Stalin, but time was later, night, for a further conversation not suitable.

The interlocutors went to their apartments.
