Specialists of the Whale sanctuary project, which involves oceanologist Jean-Michel Cousteau, received an invitation from the authorities of the Russian Federation and expect to arrive in the country next week to take part in the rescue and rehabilitation of Beluga whales and killer whales from the "whale prison" in Primorye...
"Yesterday we received the official invitation from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Russian Federation and now we study with them logistics and the schedule of a trip to Russia. We hope that we will be able to arrive next week, but it is necessary to receive still a set of confirmations and to undergo the procedures connected with receipt of a visa", - he told [the executive director of Whale sanctuary project Charles Vinik].

"The purpose of this trip - to offer the Russian scientists, researchers and government officials experiment of our team on rescue, rehabilitation and release of wild cetacea. We look forward to unite with them and to develop the plan for return of these whales to the open ocean", - Vinik added.
He confirmed that the Whale sanctuary project team participated in creation of the collective letter under which 30 scientists in total subscribed. In the message it was told about inadmissibility of keeping of 87 white whales and 10 killer whales from the bay in the Far East in bondage ...
"Although we can not draw conclusions about the state of the animals (til we have no opportunity to get acquainted with the results of the tests and examinations, as well as til we are not able to inspect them on the place), we believe that before releasing them, will require some rehabilitation program," - said Vinik. "We hope that our experience can be useful for Russian scientists, researchers and government officials, and most importantly - the whales," he added.
Details of participation Whale sanctuary project has not yet been disclosed. We only know that the team, which is preparing to be sent to Russia, will consist of eight people, among others it will be Vinic and Cousteau.
