From February 9 to February 19 the emergency mode because of invasion of polar bears acted on New Earth. Near the settlement of Belushya Guba more than 50 animals were noticed, there were cases of their aggressive behavior and penetration into residential premises. Possible causes include climate change, seasonal migration and open landfills. On February 14, a group of scientists and experts, formed by Rosprirodnadzor, including specialists of the Institute of ecology and evolution..., the national Park "Russian Arctic" and Rosprirodnadzor. flew to the archipelago to solve the problem.

Four more bears were chipped and marked with special paint. "Paint is harmless. In the future, it will be possible to identify them by these marks, " the source said.
According to him, scientists even had problems with search of bears. "Four bears were found, and one could not be found in any way. Bears as soon as at the sea ice was established, left to habitual places of hunting. Now in close proximity to settlements there are one-two bears as usual...", - Musin noted.
Recommendations about conflict prevention
As the head of Novaya Zemlya reported, scientists developed the set of guidelines how to behave at mass invasion of polar bears. "The situation will repeat because there are climatic changes. When there is no ice on the sea, bears can not to hunt, and they go to housing, so I can assume that such invasions, as we had in December and January, will happen again," Musin said.
According to the interlocutor of the agency, a part of recommendations is already implemented. "They advised to expand what we already do: to equip temporary places of accumulation of waste, to expand the system of video surveillance. We already do it, in particular, we buy containers for the closed type", - he noted.
As Musin told, experts recommended to create on the archipelago special structure on conflict prevention with polar bears. "It is very important. They recommended contacting the government of the Arkhangelsk region, the Ministry of defense and the Ministry of natural resources of Russia with a proposal to organize a separate structure on Novaya Zemlya with a staff of at least two units, which would be engaged in conflict prevention with polar bears.
