 1825

 ---

 Oh muse of fiery satire!
Come to my call, enough of sleep!
I do not need the silver lyre,
 Entrust to me Juvenal's whip.

 Not imitators, cold and angry,
 Neither translators, bold and hungry,
Nor rhymers, jaunty, meek or dumb,
 Be targets for my epigram.

 God bless you, miserable creatures!
 Your indistinguishable features
Do not deserve such fury yet.
But you, the scoundrels, step ahead!

By th' smarting whip of shame, your rotten
 Disgusting rabble I'll torment,
And if some will remain forgotten,
 Then please remind me, gentlemen.

 How many foreheads iron-pale,
How many faces, mean and stale
Are ready and just waiting till
 I affix my indelible seal.

 Или мешать царям друг с другом воевать;
 Иные, лучшие, мне дороги права;
 Не гнуть ни совести, ни помыслов, ни шеи;

 * Hamlet - примеч. авт.

** Считается, что ссылка на веронского поэта Пиндемонте - мистификация.
Alfred Musset".

I do not value much pathetic "human rights"
That many heads make reel and split to lefts and rights.
Moreover, I do not, in any way, deplore
That am refused sweet lot to challenge taxes or
To prevent the kings from fighting. I agree
That writers and the media are free
To fool the bubbleheads, but on the other hand,
It also is not bad when censors do withstand
Their outrage... Just words, and words, and words,..
Some other, higher, rights I value in this world
And of a better freedom often think.
Well, to depend on people or a king,
What difference does it make? God bless them. But, you bet,
I owe no report to anybody, yet,
Am going to serve myself uniquely and
My conscience, thoughts, and neck will never ever bend
For a livery or power. Instead, I'd like to go,
Looking at nature's wonders, to and fro,
Thrilling in front of the fine art highlights,
And voluntarily give up all other rights.

 И смерть Мещерского воспел;

 XII

 Совсем не чудо в наши дни;

 ХIII

 XIV

 Alexander Pushkin, "Ezersky". The tail-piece.
The poem was not finished by Pushkin, however.

 ...

 X

Not many would, like I, agree
To'spare in archives the leisure time,
To present for `you the pedigree
Of our hero, here in rhyme,

And for the future times ensure.
 Himself, Ezersky knew for sure
That his grandfather, a great man,
Had thousands of serfs, say, ten.

From these ten, hardly two did go
To his poor father, and at pawn.
Then sold, and he himself did own
No property at all, and so

He was, as many others are,
 To work as a'simple registar.

 XI

From critics, Muse is not protected,
So, they will question with a grin,
"What a poor hero you selected?!
Such one was never ever seen."

 Why not?! Collegiate registar...
I'd say, too rigorous you are.
What's wrong with him? Where did he fall?
And he 's my neighbor, after all."

Derzhavin, in his own `part, is
 Writing about Mestchersky's death,
Not only Empress' odes he hath,
But sings his neighbors' wedding parties,

 Then, funerals replacing feasts,
And nobody was shocked by this.

 XII

They'll say that I should have a duty
 (Compare Derzhavin's poem and mine!)
 That monstrosity and beauty
 Are separated by a line.

"Mestcherskiy was a beau monde star,
 Not a collegiate registar.
'Tis better if the poet, as I'm,
Would choose a subject more sublime,

And that I could just look around
And find some heroes. By the way,
 They're `not a wonder, at `all, today.
Or, do I live on an alien ground?

Among my own friends or kin,
A couple of heroes aren't seen?"

 XIII

Why wind is whirling among trees,
Just rising leaves and sweeping dust,
 While ships in motionless seas
Are waiting for his breath with lust?

Why from the mountains, passing towers,
An eagle flies, with heavy power
Landing on a'stub? Ask him, "What for?"
 And why her ugly blackamoor

 Young Desdemona loves with passion,
Like white Moon loves the dark of night?
Because, it is their own right
To choose, at only their discretion.

You're, proud poet, like these three.
There are not any rules for thee.

 XIV

So, deep in thought, with a'heavy load,
 Not understood by people, you,
Through the world labyrinth of crossroads,
 Are passing despondent and mute.

With crowd, nothing do you share:
 Not inspiration, not despair,
Nor sense, nor labor, nor dismay.
A fool is crying, "Here's the way!

Come, come!" But you just disregard this
And follow your `dreams, without a word.
Your work 's the only your reward,
The source of easiness and hardness,

And you just throw the result
 To the'roaring and bustling crowd.

 XV

Now they will tell me: "Go on",
Or "Trash!", or "Bravo!", or "How you might?!"
Yet, this is what I stand upon,
 It was my indefeasible right

To choose my friend and neighbor as
The hero of this poem, whereas
He 's not a count, or captain, or
A lovelace, nor even a blackamoor,

But just a resident, as many
And many thousands of same kind,
Not by his face, nor by his mind
 Distinguishable from any

 Of our brotherhood; simple, meek,
Hard working, seven days a week.

 Знаю, будет нам обед;

A raven to his brother flies,
The raven to his brother cries,
"Brother dear, where shall we dine?
To get something would be fine."

 The raven answers, "Brother, yes,
Dinner is served for us, I guess.
In the middle of a field
A young hunter is laying killed.

Why and how he lost his life
 Know only his young wife,
His good falcon, his good horse,
And his brother, who is worse.

To a grove the falcon 's flown,
 The horse got another owner,
While his widow and his brother
Very soon will get each other."

 Нет, легче посох и сума;

  В пустые небеса;

 ---

Oh, save me God from going mad,
It 's better just to die instead,
  No! I would rather drudge,
Or starve, or waste whole life in vain,
And not because I grudge my brain
  Or value it too much.

If only freedom I could keep,
Oh, how happily then I'd skip
  About in a field,
And I would sing, and I would dream,
Over the air and water skim,
  My madness be my shield.

But there 's a trouble: go mad
And they will treat you like a cad,
And chain you up at once,
All life you'll have fool's cap to wear,
And they will tease you like a bear
  And never give a chance

To'escape from bars. And all night long
You'll listen not to th' sea waves song
  Or warbling of the birds,
 But moans of fellow inmates,
And clanking chains, and squeaking gates,
  And warder's foul words.

 Наносил обиды смело;

 'Посади ты эту, птицу, -
 Молвил он царю,- на спицу;
 Так сидеть он будет смирно;

 Год, другой проходит мирно;
 'Петушок опять кричит;

 А от войска нет вестей;
 Петушок кричит опять;
 Кличет царь другую рать;
 Снова восемь дней проходят;
 Люди в страхе дни проводят;
 Петушок кричит опять;

 Войска идут день и ночь;

 Всяким яством угощала;

 За Дадоном и царицей;

 Сам себя ты, грешник, мучишь;
 Убирайся, цел пока;
 Но с иным накладно вздорить;
 Петушок спорхнул со спицы;

 ---

The tale of the golden rooster.

 In a kingdom, far away
 (More precisely, I can't say)
King Don, once upon a time,
Ruled with fame, and in the prime
Of his glory, missed no chance
To hit th' neighbors, and not once
 Waged victorious bloody war.
Yet, with years, he would prefer
Quiet and peaceful life. But then
In their turn, upon old man,
 Th'neighbors took their cruel revenge
 And inflicted severe damage
 On his kingdom. To defend
 The large country every end,
Poor king Don was forced to keep
 A strong army. Without sleep
 Generals did watch and wait,
Yet, they always were too late:
 Would expect from south, and
 From the east invaders went;
 Managed there, just to see
 New attackers from the sea.

How to live with such vexation?
 Overwhelmed with indignation,
Poor king Don just wept in rage.
 Finally, he found a sage
 (A castrate, extremely wise)
And begged him for some advise.
 The astrologer produced
From his sack a golden rooster,
 Saying to the ruler, "Sire,
Set this bird on a high spire.
 This rooster is extremely smart;
He will be your border guard.
 Watching all your land around,
He will not produce a sound
While 'tis quiet, but as soon as
 Th'border is crossed by enemies,
 Evil people will invade it,
 Or some trouble uninvited.
Th' rooster will no longer rest
He will rise his crimson crest,
 Spread the wings, and loudly crow;
 Also the direction show
 Turning to the dangerous place."
Then, king Don with a good grace
Thanks him, offers heaps of gold,
 And, at last, suggests, "Behold!
Since you did me a good turn,
 I'll be generous in return,
 And shall happily fulfill
 The first your subsequent will.

 Right away, the zealous cock
On his spire got dawn to work.
Wherever a danger 's hardly seen,
 Both his eyes, extremely keen,
 He directs towards this side
Shakes his wings and with all might
 Crows, ``cock-a-doodle-doo!
 Reign, without much to do!"
 And all neighbors quieted down
 Caring of their own crowns:
 Such a vigorous reflection
 They received in each direction.

 A year and another passed,
Th'rooster 's mute until, at last,
Wakes the city with his noise,
 In extremely loud voice.
"King! Get up! Be people's father!"
 Beg the generals. "Don't bother!
What did happen?!" With a yawn
 Answers sleepily king Don.
"Well, you just look out, Sire!
Th'rooster is crying on his spire,
Facing east, we're all in fear."
And indeed, the king can hear
 From the window an'awful roar.
"Bums! What are you waiting for?!
In no time, you have to sound
 The alarm. All horsemen, mount!"
To the east, the troops have gone
 Leaded by the elder son.

And the rooster did calm down,
So the king, took off his crown,
Went to sleep. In eight days, yet,
No news from troops they get,
 No messenger. And then
 Th'rooster starts to cry again,
 Giving the terrible alarm.
 King equips another army
 And directs his younger son
To help out the elder one.
For a while, the rooster 's mute
 But again there're no news
 For another eight days. Then,
 He begins to crow again,
Facing east, from his high steeple.
 King conscripts remaining people
 Himself placing at the head,
Doubting, what is good of that.

 Th'troops are marching day and night;
And the soldiers 're getting tired.
No field camp, or burial mound,
 Or a battle place around
They don't find. "Well, what a wonder?!",
Thinks king Don. Or did we wander
Out of the way? At last,
When eight days have already passed,
 In high mountains they see
 A luxurious silk marquee.
 Everything is mute, around
The marquee on th' bloody ground
 The whole army slaughtered lies.
King Don can't believe his eyes
 Watching a heartrending sight:
 Clearly, after a cruel fight
 In the fierce single combat
Both his sons are laying dead,
Stabbed each one by brother's sword.
First, king Don couldn't say a word,
Then, he wailed, "Oh, my dear sons!
Woe is me! In a net at once
Caught both falcons, and I hear
My own death is creeping here.

After him, th' whole army wails,
 Even th' mountains and valleys
 're shaken. Suddenly the tent
Did sweep open, and out went,
 The damsel, Shemakha's queen.
Such a beauty was ne'er seen.
 Shining like the morning dawn,
She met the king, in her gold crown.
As a'night bird before the Sun,
In front of her, he turned to stone,
 Stared at her black-coal eyes,
And forgot, both sons just died.
She smiled, bowed, and they went,
Arm in arm, to her silk tent.
At the table he was seated,
 With delicious viands treated,
For the sweetest rest is laid
To the bed of gold brocade.
 And precisely, whole week,
 Obedient to her and meek,
Charmed, with th' neck humbly bent,
He was feasting in her tent.

 Finally, the time has come
For the king to go home,
With his army and new queen.
For two weeks he wasn't seen,
And the masses were not able
Always tell a fact from fable.
Perished troops, and sons, and marriage...
 Rumors ran ahead of his'carriage.
 Then, luxurious and proud,
It was met by cheering crowd
At the city gates. The king
 Welcomes all his subjects, being
 In good spirits. Straight ahead,
 In a white saracenic hat,
Is waiting his old friend, the sage,
 Already in advanced age,
Gray as a swan. Don cries, "Come here!
How are you? What's up, my dear?
What d'you wish?" The old man says,
"Sire, now you pay me, yes.
You would square up with me if
Give your damsel, as a gift."

 Don extremely was surprised;
 Even his eyebrows raised.
"Are you crazy?!", asked the king.
 "How dare you even think?.."
Well, I promised... Yes, I did.
 Your requests, however, exceed
 Any bounds. And what for
 Could you, possibly, need her?!
Over this, don't lose your sleep,
And my promise I will keep.
 Any reasonable task...
 For example, you may ask
For some gold, or a'wine cellar,
Or the rank of Lord Chancellor,..
 Half-a-kingdom, if you please!"
"No, I do not want all these.
 Under our contract, Sire,
Give just her, as I require",
 Answers solidly the sage.
King spat out, "At your age,
Such a wish! I say again,
Do not tease yourself in vain.
You will get just nothing then.
Guards, pool off the wimp old man!"
He was trying to argue, yet,
The big and last mistake was that.
(It is not a clever thing
To start wrangling with a king.)
Don just hit him in his brow
With th' warder, he fall down
And gave up the ghost. Whole city
Shuddered. Yet, there was no pity
 Shown by the damsel. She
 Said just ha-ha and tee-hee,
Scared not much by the mortal sin,
 And although Don was in
 Some distress, but he only
 Smiled to her complaisantly.
 Finally, their coach entered
The square at the city center.
Then, the air at once resounded
With a ringing, th' people around
 At the spire together looked,
 Where the rooster suddenly took
Wing and sat down right on
The very crown of King Don,
Then pecked slightly the bald crown,
And same moment Don fall down
From the coach, once he sighed,
 And immediately died.
 And the queen has disappeared
As if she was never here.
This tale is a fib, and yet,
Lessons can be learned from that.

 ...

 Не всё свершилось. Буря грянет;

 Тебе я жертвовать, поверь;

 Poltava. A fragment

 Masepa
 ...
 This is my intimate confession.
 Accepted? Or, at your discretion,
 I am still guilty?

 Maria
  My dear friend!
You'll be the tzar of the Fatherland.
 Your silver hair perfectly fit
 The golden crown.

 Masepa

  Wait! The deed
Is not yet finished. Storms break out.
Who knows what is waiting ahead.

 Maria

Oh, near to you, I have no doubt.
 You will be tzar.

 Masepa

  Or, maybe, dead.

 Maria

Could I survive you? Not! If so...
If you are dead I'll also die.
But fortune chose you. I do know.

 Masepa

 So, do you love me?

 Maria

  Love you? I?!

 Masepa

Just tell me, who you value more,
 But honestly, your father or
 Your husband? Answer.

 Maria

  Oh, my dear,
Why do you trouble me in vain?
I have to bear alone this pain.
I'm trying not to think or hear
 About my family. I am
Now disgrace and shame for them.
Perhaps (oh, what an awful dream!)
My father hates me, and by him
I'm cursed. And who's in fault, but you?

 Masepa

This means, you love me more. 'Tis true?
 Why don't you answer?

 Maria

  Oh, my Lord!

 Masepa

Just yes or no? Single word.

 Maria

 Decide yourself.

 Masepa

  If he or I...
If one of us would have to die,
But who, depends on your decision.
Whose life, Maria, you would yield?
To whom become defense and shield?
Who would you choose in such collision?

 Maria

Oh, stop it! Don't disturb my soul.
 You are a demon, tempter.

 Masepa
  So?

 Maria

Your speech is harsh, you look severe.
Oh, don't be angry! Trust me, dear,
All in this world I'd, anyhow,
Lose, like a desperate crazy gambler,
 To you. But stop it.

 Masepa
  Well, remember,
Maria, what you told me now.

 ---

But of the noisy ball quite tired,
 Turning dawn into night amiss,
He 's quietly sleeping, as required,
The child of luxury and bliss.

Next afternoon he'll wake up and
The whole day 's already planned,
 Motley and uniform, I'd say,
 Tomorrow is like yesterday.

But was he happy, my Eugene,
In the best years of his life,
 With entertainments, and delight,
 With striking victories and wins?

Among all feasts, has he found
Ways to remain careless and sound?

 Нет: рано чувства в нем остыли;
 Ему наскучил света шум;

Oh, no! The feelings have early deadened
In him, and getting tired and bored,
He looked indifferent and sad on
All the temptations of great world:

On beauties, with their charm and cheating,
On friends, and feasts, and other meetings,
Because it might be hard to make
Good jokes, when you have headache.

And you just think a bit about it:

 The Bronze Horseman. A fragment

Eugene had winced. His thoughts got clear
All of a sudden, he recalled
The place, where ravenous and bold
Waves raged around him so near,
The house with watching lions, and
 This magnificent monument,
Right next to him: At full tilt,
The bronze steed on a stone hill
Is bucking th' rider, at whose will
Below the sea this city 's build.
He's terrible in the morning haze!
What energy is in his face!
What magic power 's spread around!
The steed is flying like a bird.
What place you're heading in this world
And where your hoofs will touch the ground?
 Oh, mighty cruel sovereign,
In the same way, right in the middle
Of gallop, with the iron bridle
You raised whole Russia by your rein.

 "...
 Могла бы кончиться, друзья;

"Here is my husband, Count. My dear,
Count Nulin." "Glad to see you here!
The weather is pretty bad, I'd tell.
I have just heard from the blacksmith,
Your carriage is quite ready. If
You'll stay with us for dinner? Well,
Bring some vodka! Count, please try!
Right here, in our kaleyard, I
 Have hunted down a rabbit."
"Well, I should leave." "Oh, what a habit!
I beg you. We rejoice in guests.
Please, Count, stay!" But now, the quest
 Was hopeless already, and
The Count insisted on the end
Of his short visit. A sorrow case.
The butler groans with the suitcase
(After a glass) and, by request,
Two servants carry the dowry chest
To screw on to the carriage. Watch!
'Tis already next to the porch.
The butler quickly packed the stuff,
 Count Nulin finally moved off,
And this, in fact, would be the end
Of th' story, but the last fragment.

The carriage 's run away and then
Wife in details told to her man
(And to all neighbors) a good jest
 About the count's failed gest.
But let me ask you, "Who with her
Laughed at the story much much more
Than others? I bet, you never guess."
"Why not?! Of course, her husband. Yes,
Who else but him?" "Ha-ha, 'of course'!
Wrong guess. In fact, it couldn't be worse,
Because he was in rage and stress.
He called the count an idiot
And sucker, said, if so, he ought
To make the dirty scoundrel scream,
That he will set his dogs on him.
The right answer is 'Lidin', a laird,
Their neighbor, though it sounds weird."

Here, finally we've reached our goal.
 From this example we derive
That, in our times, a loyal wife
Is not uncommon, not at all.

 Лорд Байрон был того же мненья;
 Жуковский то же говорил;
 Поэт казнит, поэт венчает;
 В потомстве дальном поражает;
 Героев утешает он;
 Хвала для вас докучный звон;

 Прекрасно. Вот же вам совет;
 Предвижу ваше возраженье;
 Кипит, бурлит воображенье;
 Нетерпеливые чтецы;
 Кто для души, кто для пера;

Conversation of the bookseller with the poet.
 Fragments

 Bookseller:
Verses for you is a pastime:
Just for an hour you take a seat
And, look! brand new with perfect rhyme
A poem is ready. This is it.
That's why I came to you, my dear.
No bargain. Please, just quote your price
And all these pages we'll right here
Turn into rubles in a trice...
And why 're you sighing, about what?

 Poet:
Well, I was far and did recall
Those times, long before my fall,
When I was carefree, writing not
 For rubles...

 Bookseller:
 But isn't fame a substitute
 For inspiration and lofty dreams.
The readers, they are crazy for `you
And for your poems, while it seems
That hundreds of your colleagues still
Are'waiting for readers just in vain,
And their stale poems are and will
 Forever on dusty shelves remain.

 Poet:
But happy 's one who never revealed
His mind and soul's high creation,
 Inside himself reliably sealed
And hid his thoughts and inspiration,
Who did not say a single word
To public, and a man his own,
 Not recognized or even known,
Without a name he left this world.
All hopes is nothing but illusion,
And glory... Tell me what is that:
 An ignoramus' persecution
Or the delight of a blockhead?

 Bookseller:
 Lord Byron this opinion shared,
 Zhukovskiy had a similar thought.
 Nevertheless, their works were bought
Although you may think, 'tis weird.
Your lot 's enviable, isn't it?
 The poet executes and crowns,
His verdict on a crime or feat
 For future generations sounds.
 He is the supreme judge alone;
Can raise to the imperial throne,
 Like Cleopatra, his girl-friend.
The fame for you is a heavy stone,
 But `ladies are longing `for it,`and
 This is already a sound reason;
Just write for them, your flattery is
A salable good for any season.
You don't want laurels, get some bliss.
 ...

You are a poet! I like this ire.
 The reasons for your discontent
I have no chance to know, and
 Nevertheless, may I inquire:
No exceptions at all?! Good Lord,
All ladies that you loved that much
 Are getting now this bitter grudge;
Or, maybe, one of them deserved
 The poems inspired by her?
 ...

Let 's summarize, of love you're tired,
And terribly with fame you're bored,
 About to refuse your lyre,
And leave forever the noisy world.
Well, may I ask, when you get rid of
All these nice things that you despise,
 Instead, what will you choose?

 Poet:
 Just freedom!

 Bookseller:
All right. I'll give you some advise.
'Tis trivial, but should be told,
In times like ours, without gold
To hope for freedom won't be wise.
What 's glory? - Just a motley patch
 On the worn-out poet's shirt;
Gold, gold, and only gold can match
Your toil and serve as a reward.
I know how you will obj`ect,
 But also know `you, gentlemen:
You always have a great respect
For your own work until its end,
But after this you feel frustration.
The poem is just finished and then
You're bored with own new born creation.
Excuse me if I am too bold:
'Tis not for sale, your inspiration,
But manuscripts just must be sold.
What are we waiting for? Already
 Impatient readers 're running about,
Demand for your nice works is steady,
The previous one was just sold out.
Critics want books for their satire
And others for their soul and wit,
So I do hope for your lyre,
Expect a lot of good from it.

 Poet:
 You're absolutely right.
 Here is the manuscript.
 Let us make a deal.

 Указывает путь и посох подает;

To wait for a sympathy of public is naive!
A poet for them is just a clown. If
He utters a line of doleful despair,
And piercing sound chiming in the air
Will shake the hearts with an unknown force,
They node indulgently, applaud, and say, "Of course,
This guy is a genius". Moreover, if meanwhile
He suffers a loss, imprisonment, or exile,
"So much the better", say the lovers of the art,
"Yes, all the better, in the mind and heart
Let him collect new feelings and new thoughts
 To present to us"...

Here Pushkin lies; with muses young and smart,
In love and laziness, some merry time he had.
He did not do much good, but at his heart
He was, by God, a good and pleasant lad.

 The Winter Road

Through the wavy mist of a'cloud
Th' Moon is creeping in the night.
 On the doleful fields around
 Dolefully it sheds her light.

 On the tiresome winter road
 A swift troika tears along.
 Monotone, on the same note,
The sleigh-`bell is ringing its song.

Neither light, nor even a`dark hut,
 Snowy boonies... During the trip
 I am meeting nothing but
 Lonely fields and mileposts striped.

 Something is familiar and touching
 In the coachman's endless songs,
 Sometimes merry and debauching,
 Sometimes painful, like "heart tongs".

 Sad and boring... But tomorrow
 Nina, next to the fireplace,
 I'll forget my bitter sorrow
 Gazing at your dear face.

 Steadily, the clock-hand chiming
Makes full round, the day will pass,
Then midnight will come in time and
Drive them out, all but us.

Nina, I am sad and lonely,
Th' `coachman fell `silent, half asleep,
 Th' bell is clinging monotonely,
The Moon is pale, the night is deep...

 Но не хочу, о други, умирать;
 Я жить хочу, чтоб мыслить и страдать;

From mad young years merriment and power
Are now hard on me like vague hangover.

But mourning of the past and grief of mine
With time are getting stronger, like old wine.

My path is sad and only toil and sorrow
Are promised by the raging sea of morrow.

 And yet, my friends, I do not want to leave;
To suffer and to think, I want to live.

And I do know, happiness and joy 'll
 Appear among worries and turmoil.

About a fiction I shall shed a tear,
Revel in harmony, so clean and clear.

And love, perhaps, in my declining days,
Will smile farewell on me with tender rays.

My friends, soon I shall die and leave you for a crypt,
But loving my shadow, you keep the manuscript.
When thunderstorms will pass, a superstitious crowd,

 Тебе, пророк, не для строптивых;

 Но дважды ангел вострубит;

 Обезображенные страхом;

 An imitation of the Koran

 III

The Prophet frowned through his glare
And, as soon as the blind approach,
He flees, and sinners do not dare
 To show confusion or reproach.

The copy of Quran from the Heaven
 The Prophet got not for th' insane;
The sermon quietly must be given,
 Without forcing the profane!

Why man is proud? Of no worth,
And vain, and empty, and forlorn...
For he came naked to this Earth
And weak will die, as weak was born?

For God will kill him and revive
 According to the holy will,
And from the heaven keeps his life
In happiness and in its ills?

And gave him bread, and olive oil,
And dates, and fruits - his whole yield,
And blessed his dwelling and his toil,
His wives and children, barn and field?

But once he'll come, an Angel Black,
And trumpet twice, like stunning thunder,
And sons from mothers will start back,
And brothers flee apart in wonder.

All on their knees to God will crawl,
Disfigured in their fear and shame,
And right to Hell the wicked will fall
Enveloped in dust and raging flame.

In ancient times, the Mighty dared
 To challenge you, Almighty Lord,
In reckless pride, ample and weird,
But tamed was, by your clever word.

You claimed that life is just your gift,
You punish with death, severe and swift,
In your firm hand you keep the world.
He claimed that life he's giving too
And can take it as fast as you,
Hence, he is equal to you, oh, Lord!

But Prophet's boast was sharply ceased
When you have frowned in rage and said,
"I used to raise the Sun from th' East.
Well, try to raise it from sunset!"
