 Robert Hillyer Arcadia

Arcadia means the Land of Bears,
 Not of the Shepherds and their sheep;
Thus Time, the soft romancer, wears
Away our strength to dreaming sleep,

Gilding the fangs of beasts and rocks
 With twilight hazes into grace.
The shepherd's pipe ? the mumbling flocks ?
I hear the black bear's padded pace.

I, too, have in Arcadia dwelt,
 Glossing the name as poets would;
Yet stands, while pastoral dainties melt,
The Bear, where he has always stood.

Rue Francois Premier !

Robert Hillyer Early in the Morning*
 (En repos, 1917).

 Early in the morning
 Of a lovely summer day,
As they lowered the bright awning
 At the outdoor cafe;
 I was breakfasting on croissants
 And cafe; au lait
 Under greenery like scenery,
 Rue Francois Premier.
They were hosing the hot pavement
With a dash of flashing spray
And a smell of summer showers
When the dust is drenched away,
 Under greenery like scenery,
 Rue Francois Premier.
I was twenty and a lover
 And in Paradise to stay,
 Very early in the morning
 Of a lovely summer day.

Tierra del Fuego:

 я видел здесь косые птичьи взлёты;

 Robert Hillyer Remote

The farthest country is Tierra del Fuego,
 That is the bleakest and the loneliest land;
There are the echoing mountains of felspar.
And salt winds walking the empty sand.

This country remembers the birth of the moon
 Prom a rocky rib of the young earth's side;
It heard the white-hot mountains bellow
Against the march of the first Hood tide.

I lifted a shell by the glass-green breakers
And heard what no man has heard before,
The whisper of steam in the hot fern forest
And slow feet crunching the ocean floor.

I saw the slanted flash of a seagull
When a sheaf of light poured over a cloud,
I heard the wind in the stiff dune grasses.
But I saw no sail and heard no shroud.

To a promontory of Tierra del Fuego
I climbed at noon and stretched my hand
Toward another country, remoter and bleaker.

 Robert Hillyer An Epicurean Fragment

As part of an exploding universe,
Our bit of fragmentation might be worse.
 Seated beneath companionable stars,
 Small beneficiary of cosmic wars,
I must admire how well our atom split
When once the Scientist exploded it.
 Aeons ago an overwhelming fission
Blew the existing order to perdition,
But luckily so long before my birth
 I need not mourn the burst that made the earth;
And, furthermore, I shall not be about
When, aeons hence, our fragment flickers out.

 Spared both the introductory detonation
 And the finale of annihilation,
With snug millenniums on either side,
Through the brief pleasantries of life I ride,
Remote from the beginning and the end.
I must regard that bombardier as friend,
Who, on an impulse, pulled the switch - or cork,
And gave us Earth, the Seasons, and New York.
Should I myself face atomized disaster,
At least I've profited from one far vaster,
And trust that equal happiness befall
Those who will benefit from one so small.

 Robert Hillyer Uneventful Return

 It is the time of mooring now;
The pebbles scrape and the reeds are parted
Before the languid push of the prow.

It is the time of mooring now,
And where all day the swallow has darted
Dipping his wings in the sunny waves,
There is only a smooth, dark mirror spread
Where the dancers of the mist will tread.
The air is cool as the breath of caves,
And damp as the breath of steaming loam...

It is the time of mooring now,
Ship your oars and come back home.

 Robert Hillyer The Ivory Tower

Who knows through what mysterious tensions these
 Strange pinnacles of personality
Are held in place ? The crazy structure sprawls
 Over a territory not prepared
For architecture. Here a turret sags
Into the sand; there in a rock, one tower
Stands up beyond its place in the design,
 And gargoyles counterbalance random shifts
 From equipoise, or flying buttresses,
As late as yesterday, were improvised
Hastily over space to clutch a wall.
Some years ago this efflorescent structure
Could have been simplified, even rebuilt,
 According to a modern analyst,
With low walls all of glass to gulp the sun,
And the interior plain as everyday.
But now it is too late - one column shifted,
One bit tracery removed, yes, even
One tendril of this ivy vine clipped off,
And the whole delicately balanced thing
Would crash around our ears. It is fantastic,
But best left as it is. And, by the way,
I note it has outlasted all the bombings.

 Robert Hillyer Light, Variable Winds

 This is the getting-nowhere breeze
That tries the soul of mariners -
The reason that the Seven Seas
 Are peopled with philosophers.

We come about or jibe, to learn
That wind can box the compass, too,
 Adroitly turning as we turn,
Adverse no matter what we do.

Still, better than dead calm, at least
It does impel us back and forth,
Giving the west some hope of east,
The south mirage of the north.

 Hardened philosophers, we thrive
 On facts we cannot overcome
As in vague twilight we arrive
Where in vague dawn we started from.

 Robert Hillyer Crumbly Court

The peacock, herald in the dappled park
Where ladies strolled to greet the hierarch,
The noble house, half ivy and half stone,
Where scores could gather and yet seem alone,
The lord, the guest, the punctual servitor
Who brought the bath at eight, the tea four,
Tutors and children, youths in tennis togs,
 Gamekeepers, horses, solemn-wagging dogs, -
These, living once, are now but picturesque
Like yellow diaries in a long-locked desk.
Here where the poet walked to meet the matron
Who had induced her lord to be his patron,
The yews that made neat couplets of the border
Sprawl like free verse in meterless desorder.
Within the bell-tower of the chapel, Time
Evokes no answer from the rusty chime.
No visitors regard with bated breath
The bet where slept the great Elizabeth,
Or read the masques in manuscript whose names
Failed to outlive their lesser subject, James.
Here in this court the Master of the Rolls,
Falling to dust, crumples the crested scrolls,
While lord and lady into memory melt,
One with the Saxon, Roman, and the Celt.

 Robert Hillyer The Bats

 These caverns yield
 But vampires upside down.
 Better the field or town
 Than exploration such as this.
 These creature of antithesis
 With webbed unfeathered wings
Will shrink away from our electric wink
Lest they be dazzled to the dark things.

 Through stalactites
 Of lancets in reverse
 Their muffled flights rehearse
A foray on the world of sleep.
These are our underdreams that keep
 Our secrets from ourselves,
The lark become half rode in that dark
Wherein the downward mountain climber delves.

 Seal all, before
 In ragged panic driven
 These nightwings pour to heaven
And seal us from our natural sun.
Of two forbidden trees, there's one
 Untampered with till now,
Where throng, with their inaudibly high song,
The bats headdown from roots that are its bough.

Robert Hillyer The Garden in Pomfret

 The starry music through remote
 And silent evening slowly grew.
At first, white echoes note by note
 Shaking the air they trembled through;
Then with a sharpened clearness born
Of growing silence to their sound
And growing darkness to their light,
They lifted pattern from the ground,
From silence shaped the silver horn
To blow the reveille of night
And ring the chiming globes of dew.

And all about me where I stood
 Unearthly blossoms came to view;
Deep in the chancels of the wood
Pale crystals whitened two by two.
 "A starry night !" I said aloud.
"A starry night", the dew replied.
Then from beneath my feet the song
Of earth streamed in a silent tide.
I rode the star of earth in proud
Replying light and bade the throng
 Begin their silver song anew.
