 "Bisclavret ad nun en Bretan,
 Garwall l'apelent li Norman.
 Jadis le peеt-hum oir,
 E souvent suleit avenir,
 Humes plusurs Garwall devindrent
 E es boscages meisun tindrent".
MARIE DE FRANCE: Lais du Bisclavaret *

1: IN either mood, to bless or curse,
 2: God bringeth forth the breath of man;
3: No angel sire, no woman nurse
4: Shall change the work that God began:
5: One spirit shall be like a star,
 6: He shall delight to honour one;
 7: Another spirit he shall mar;
8: None shall undo what God hath done.

 9: The weaker holier season wanes;
 10: Night comes with darkness and with sins;
11: And, in all forests, hills, and plains,
12: A keener, fiercer life begins.
13: And, sitting by the low hearth fires,
 14: I start and shiver fearfully;
15: For thoughts all strange and new desires
 16: Of distant things take hold on me;
17: And many a feint of touch or sound
18: Assails me, and my senses leap
19: As in pursuit of false things found
20: And lost in some dim path of sleep.
21: But, momently, there seems restored
 22: A triple strength of life and pain;
23: I thrill, as though a wine were poured
24: Upon the pore of every vein:
25: I burn-as though keen wine were shed
26: On all the sunken flames of sense-
27: Yea, till the red flame grows more red,
28: And all the burning more intense,

29: And, sloughing weaker lives grown wan
30: With needs of sleep and weariness,
31: I quit the hallowed haunts of man
32: And seek the mighty wilderness.
 33: -Now over intervening waste
34: Of lowland drear, and barren wold,
35: I scour, and ne'er assuage my haste,
 36: Inflamed with yearnings manifold;
37: Drinking a distant sound that seems
 38: To come around me like a flood;
39: While all the track of moonlight gleams
 40: Before me like a streak of blood;
41: And bitter stifling scents are past
42: A-dying on the night behind,
43: And sudden piercing stings are cast
44: Against me in the tainted wind.
45: And lo, afar, the gradual stir,
 46: And rising of the stray wild leaves;
47: The swaying pine, and shivering fir,
48: And windy sound that moans and heaves

49: In first fits, till with utter throes
50: The whole wild forest lolls about:
51: And all the fiercer clamour grows,
 52: And all the moan becomes a shout;
53: And mountains near and mountains far
54: Breathe freely: and the mingled roar
55: Is as of floods beneath some star
56: Of storms, when shore cries unto shore.
57: But soon, from every hidden lair
58: Beyond the forest tracts, in thick
59: Wild coverts, or in deserts bare,
60: Behold They come-renewed and quick-
61: The splendid fearful herds that stray
62: By midnight, when tempestuous moons
63: Light them to many a shadowy prey,
64: And earth beneath the thunder swoons.
65: -O who at any time hath seen
66: Sight all so fearful and so fair,
67: Unstricken at his heart with keen
68: Whole envy in that hour to share

69: Their unknown curse and all the strength
70: Of the wild thirsts and lusts they know,
71: The sharp joys sating them at length,
72: The new and greater lusts that grow?
73: But who of mortals shall rehearse
74: How fair and dreadfully they stand,
75: Each marked with an eternal curse,
76: Alien from every kin and land?
77: -Along the bright and blasted heights
78: Loudly their cloven footsteps ring!
79: Full on their fronts the lightning smites,
80: And falls like some dazed baffled thing.
81: Now through the mountain clouds they break,
 82: With many a crest high-antlered, reared
83: Athwart the storm: now they outshake
84: Fierce locks or manes, glossy and weird,
85: That sweep with sharp perpetual sound
86: The arid heights where the snows drift,
87: And drag the slain pines to the ground,
88: And all into the whirlwind lift

89: The heavy sinking slopes of shade
90: From hidden hills of monstrous girth,
91: Till new unearthly lights have flayed
92: The draping darkness from the earth.
93: Henceforth what hiding-place shall hide
94: All hallowed spirits that in form
95: Of mortal stand beneath the wide
96: And wandering pale eye of the storm?
97: The beadsman in his lonely cell
98: Hath cast one boding timorous look
99: Toward the heights; then loud and well,
100: -Kneeling before the open book-
101: All night he prayeth in one breath,
102: Nor spareth now his sins to own:
103: And through his prayer he shuddereth
104: To hear how loud the forests groan.
105: For all abroad the lightnings reign,
106: And rally, with their lurid spell,
 107: The multitudinous campaign
108: Of hosts not yet made fast in hell:

109: And us indeed no common arm,
110: Nor magic of the dark may smite,
111: But, through all elements of harm,
112: Across the strange fields of the night-
113: Enrolled with the whole giant host
 114: Of shadowy, cloud-outstripping things
115: Whose vengeful spells are uppermost,
116: And convoyed by unmeasured wings,
117: We foil the thin dust of fatigue
118: With bright-shod phantom feet that dare
119: All pathless places and the league
 120: Of the light shifting soils of air;
121: And loud, mid fearful echoings,
122: Our throats, aroused with hell's own thirst,
 123: Outbay the eternal trumpetings;
124: The while, all impious and accurst,
125: Revealed and perfected at length
126: In whole and dire transfigurement,
127: With miracle of growing strength
128: We win upon a keen warm scent.

 129: Before us each cloud fastness breaks;
130: And o'er slant inward wastes of light,
131: And past the moving mirage lakes,
132: And on within the Lord's own sight-
 133: We hunt the chosen of the Lord;
134: And cease not, in wild course elate,
135: Until we see the flaming sword
136: And Gabriel before His gate!
137: O many a fair and noble prey
 138: Falls bitterly beneath our chase;
139: And no man till the judgment day,
 140: Hath power to give these burial place;
141: But down in many a stricken home
 142: About the world, for these they mourn;
143: And seek them yet through Christendom
144: In all the lands where they were born.
145: And oft, when Hell's dread prevalence
146: Is past, and once more to the earth
147: In chains of narrowed human sense
148: We turn,-around our place of birth,

 149: We hear the new and piercing wail;
150: And, through the haunted day's long glare,
151: In fearful lassitudes turn pale
152: With thought of all the curse we bear.
153: But, for long seasons of the moon,
154: When the whole giant earth, stretched low,
155: Seems straightening in a silent swoon
156: Beneath the close grip of the snow,
157: We well nigh cheat the hideous spells
158: That force our souls resistless back,
159: With languorous torments worse than hell's
160: To the frail body's fleshly rack:
161: And with our brotherhood the storms,
 162: Whose mighty revelry unchains
 163: The avalanches, and deforms
164: The ancient mountains and the plains,-
165: We hold high orgies of the things,
166: Strange and accursed of all flesh,
167: Whereto the quick sense ever brings
168: The sharp forbidden thrill afresh.

169: And far away, among our kin,
170: Already they account our place
171: With all the slain ones, and begin
172: The Masses for our soul's full grace.

 которым Избранный пылал;

 1: I was not with the rest at play;
2: My brothers laughed in joyous mood:
3: But I-I wandered far away
 4: Into the fair and silent wood;
5: And with the trees and flowers I stood,
6: As dumb and full of dreams as they:
7: -For One it seemed my whole heart knew,
8: Or One my heart had known long since,
 9: Was peeping at me through the dew;
10: And with bright laughter seemed to woo
11: My beauty, like a Fairy prince.

12: Oh, what a soft enchantment filled
13: The lonely paths and places dim!
14: It was as though the whole wood thrilled,
15: And a dumb joy, because of him,
16: Weighed down the lilies tall and slim,
17: And made the roses blush, and stilled
18: The great wild voices in half fear:
19: It was as though his smile did hold
 20: All things in trances manifold;
21: And in each place as he drew near
22: The leaves were touched and turned to gold.

23: And well I seemed to know, the while,
24: It was for me and for my sake,
25: He wrought that magic with his smile,
26: And set the unseen spells to make
27: The lonely ways I loved to take
28: So full of sweetness, to beguile
 29: My heart and keep me there for hours;
30: And sometimes I was sure he lay
31: Beside me hid among the flowers,
32: Or climbed above me, and in play
33: Shook down the white tree-bloom in showers.

34: But more and more he seemed to seek
35: My heart: till, dreaming of all this,
36: I thought one day to hear him speak,
37: Or feel, indeed, his sudden kiss
38: Bind me to some great unknown bliss:
39: Then there would stay upon my cheek
40: Full many a light and honied stain,
41: That told indeed how I had lain
 42: Deep in the flowery banks all day;
43: And round me too there would remain
44: Some strange wood-blossom's scent alway.

45: 'Twas not the bright and fond deceit
46: Of that first summer,-whose great bloom
47: Quite overcame me with its sweet,
48: And seemed to fill me and consume
49: My very brain with its perfume;-
50: 'Twas no false spell made my heart beat
51: With such a joy to be alone
52: With all the bloom and all the scent:
53: It was a thing I dared not own,
54: Already whispered there and known,
55: Already with my whole life blent.

56: It was this secret, vast, sublime,
57: Too full of wonder to be told-
58: Whose extreme rapture from that time
59: Doth ever more and more enfold
60: My spirit, like a robe of gold,
61: Or, as it were, the magic clime
62: Of some fair heaven about me shed-
63: Wherein are songs of unseen birds,
64: And whispers of delicious words
65: More sweet than any man hath said
66: Of all the living or the dead.

 67: -O, the incomparable love
68: Of him, my Lover !-O, to tell
69: Its way and measure were above
70: The throbbing chords of speech that swell
71: Within me !-Doth it not excel
72: All other, sung or written of?
73: Yea now, O all ye fair mankind-
74: Consider well the gracious line
75: Of those your lovers; call to mind
76: Their love of you, and ye shall find
77: Not one among them all like mine.

78: It seems as though, from calm to calm,
79: A whole fair age had passed me by,
80: Since first this Lover, through a charm
81: Of flowers, wooed so tenderly,
82: I had no fear of drawing nigh,
83: Nor knew, indeed, that-with an arm
84: Closed round and holding me-he led
85: My eager way from sight to sight
86: Of all the summer magic-right
87: To where himself had surely spread
88: Some pleasant snare for my delight.

89: And now, in an eternal sphere,
90: Beneath one flooding look of his-
91: Wherein, all beautiful and dear,
92: That endless melting gold that is
93: His love, with flawless memories
94: Grows ever richer and more clear-
95: My life seems held, as some faint star
96: Beneath its sun: and through the far
 97: Celestial distances for miles,
98: To where vast mirage futures are,
99: I trace the gilding of his smiles.

100: And, in the long enthralling dream,
101: That, ever-through each purer zone
102: Of love translating me-doth seem
103: To bring my spirit near his own,
104: I hear the veiled angelic tone
105: Of many voices; as I deem,
106: Assuring me of something sweet,
 107: And strange, and wondrous, and intense;
108: Which thing they evermore repeat
109: In fair half parables, from whence
 110: I draw a vague all-blissful sense.

111: For, one by one, e'en as I rise,
112: And feel the pure Ethereal
113: Refining all before my eyes:
 114: Whole beauteous worlds material
115: Are seen to enter gradual
 116: The great transparent paradise
117: Of this my dream; and, all revealed,
118: To break upon me more and more
119: Their inward singing souls, and yield
120: A wondrous secret half concealed
121: In all their loveliness before.

122: And so, when, through unmeasured days,
123: The far effulgence of the sea
124: Is holding me in long amaze,
125: And stealing with strange ecstasy
126: My heart all opened silently;-
127: There reach me, from among the sprays,
128: Ineffable faint words that sing
129: Within me,-how, for me alone,
130: One who is lover-who is King,
131: Hath dropt, as 'twere a precious stone,
132: That sea-a symbol of his throne.

133: And now, indeed, some precious time
 134: It hath,-all inexpressible!
 135: All rapture!-yea, through many a rhyme
136: Of wordless speech made fairly well,
137: And beauteous worlds' whole visible
 138: Unbosomings of love sublime-
139: It hath some blessеd while become
140: Familiar, how all things take part
141: For him to whose love I am come,
142: And in their ways-not weak nor dumb-
143: Are ever calling on my heart.

144: And, through the long charmed solitude
145: Of throbbing moments, whose strong link
146: Is one delicious hope pursued
147: From trance to trance, the while I think
148: And know myself upon the brink
 149: Of His eternal kiss,-endued
150: With part of him, the very wind
151: Hath power to ravish me in sips
152: Or long mad wooings that unbind
 153: My hair,-wherein I truly find
154: The magic of his unseen lips.

155: And, so almighty is the thrill
156: I feel at many a faintest breath
157: Or stir of sound-as 'twere a rill
158: Of joy traversing me, or death
 159: Dissolving all that hindereth
160: My thought from power to fulfil
161: Some new embodiment of bliss,-
162: I do consume with the immense
163: Delight as of some secret kiss,
164: And am become like one whose sense
165: Is used with raptures too intense!

166: O like some soft insidious breath,
167: Whose first invasion winneth quite
168: To all its madness or its death
169: The heart, resisting not the might
170: And poison of its new delight,-
171: E'en so is this that entereth
172: In whispers, or through subtly wrought
 173: Enchantment snaring every thought;
174: Yea, by the whole mysterious pore
175: Of life,-this joy surpassing aught
176: That heart of man hath known before.

177: And, though, indeed, a hapless end
178: Of damning ruin were but sure,
179: Yet could I none of me defend
 180: From such a sweet and perfect lure;
181: But must, as long as they endure,
182: To all these sorceries still lend
183: My heart; believing how I stand
184: Nigh some unearthly bliss that lies
185: Dissembled all before my eyes;-
186: Do I not see a radiant Hand
187: Transmuting earth, and air, and skies?

188: -And is not the great language mute
189: The stars' deep looks are wont to melt
190: Upon my soul, the very suit
 191: Of this unearthly wooer-felt
192: So clearly pleading-I have knelt
193: Full oft, most dreading to pollute
194: The holy rapture with a sigh?
195: And doth not every accent nigh
 196: Consume each Past to a thin shred;
 197: While endless visions glorify
198: My sight, and haloes touch my head?

 199: Yea, mystic consummation! yea,
 200: O Wondrous suitor,-whosoe'er
201: Thou art; that in such mighty way,
202: In distant realms, athwart the air
203: And lands and seas, with all things fair,
204: Hast wooed me even till this day;-
 205: It seems thou drawest near to me;
206: Or I, indeed, so nigh to thee,
207: I catch rare breaths of a delight
208: From thy most glorious country, see
209: Its distant glow upon some height.
210: At times there is vouchsafed me, e'en
211: Some sign that certainly foretells
212: Of thee at hand: so I have seen-
213: Caught by no earthly clash of bells-
 214: A gleam of silver citadels;
215: Distant, and radiant with such sheen
216: As only on high virgin snows,
 217: Or from the diamond one knows;
218: Displayed a moment, without shroud,
219: Eclipsing all the night's fair shows
220: From some dim pinnacle of cloud:
221: Or, through a calm hushed interval
222: Of most charmed thinking, there hath passed,
223: And with no rumour or footfall,
224: A troop of blonde ones who surpassed
225: All tales of loveliness amassed
226: In my child's dreamland; costumed all
227: As for a bridal; who did shine
228: With such a splendour on each face,
229: And light upon the garments fine,
230: I knew them surely of a race
231: That dwells in that fair realm of thine.

 232: O thou my Destiny! O thou
 233: My own-my very Love-my Lord!
234: Whom from the first day until now
235: My heart, divining, hath adored
236: So perfectly it hath abhorred
237: The tie of each frail human vow-
238: O I would whisper in thine ear-
239: Yea, may I not, once, in the clear
240: Pure night, when, only, silver shod
 241: The angels walk?-thy name, I fear
242: And love, and tremble saying-GOD!

 A Precious Urn

1: he great effulgence of the early days
2: Of one first summer, whose bright joys, it seems,
 3: Have been to all my songs their golden themes;
4: The rose leaves gathered from the faded ways
5: I wandered in when they were all a-blaze
 6: With living flowers and flame of the sunbeams;
7: And, more than all, that ending of my dreams
 8: Divinely, in a dream-like thing,-the face
9: Of one beloved lady once possest
10: In one long kiss that made my whole life burn:
11: What of all these remains to me?-At best,
12: A heap of fragrant ashes now, that turn
13: My heavy heart into a funeral urn
14: Which I have buried deep within my breast.

 ребёнку дали в давнюю весну;

Arthur O"Shaughnessy The Spectre of the Past

1: ON the great day of my life-
 2: On the memorable day-
3: Just as the long inward strife
4: Of the echoes died away,
5: Just as on my couch I lay
 6: Thinking thought away;
7: Came a Man into my room,
 8: Bringing with him gloom.

9: Midnight stood upon the clock,
 10: And the street sound ceased to rise;
11: Suddenly, and with no knock,
12: Came that Man before my eyes:
13: Yet he seemed not anywise
 14: My heart to surprise,
15: And he sat down to abide
 16: At my fireside.

17: But he stirred within my heart
 18: Memories of the ancient days;
19: And strange visions seemed to start
 20: Vividly before my gaze,
21: Yea, from the most distant haze
 22: Of forgotten ways:
23: And he looked on me the while
24: With a most strange smile.

25: But my heart seemed well to know
26: That his face the semblance had
27: Of my own face long ago
28: Ere the years had made it sad,
29: When my youthful looks were clad
 30: In a smile half glad;
31: To my heart he seemed in truth
 32: All my vanished youth.

33: Then he named me by a name
 34: Long since unfamiliar grown,
35: But remembered for the same
 36: That my childhood's ears had known;
37: And his voice was like my own
 38: In a sadder tone
39: Coming from the happy years
 40: Choked, alas, with tears.

41: And, as though he nothing knew
42: Of that day's fair triumphing,
43: Or the Present were not true,
 44: Or not worth remembering,
45: All the Past he seemed to bring
 46: As a piteous thing
47: Back upon my heart again,
48: Yea, with a great pain:

49: "Do you still remember the winding street
 50: In the grey old village?" He seemed to say;
51: "And the long school days that the sun made sweet
52: And the thought of the flowers from far away?
53: And the faces of friends whom you used to meet
54: In that village day by day,
55: -Ay, the face of this one or of that?" he said,
56: And the names he named were names of the dead
57: Who all in the churchyard lay.

58: "Do you still remember your brother's face,
59: And his soft light hair, and his eyes' deep blue,
60: And the child's pet name that in every place
61: Was once so familiar to him and to you?
62: And the innocent sports and the butterfly chase
63: That lasted the bright day through?"
64: -O this time, I thought of the churchyard and sighed,
65: For I thought of the dead lying side by side,
66: And my brother who lay there too.

 67: "And do you remember the far green hills;
 68: Or the long straight path by the side of the stream;
69: Or the road that led to the farm and the mills,
70: And the fields where you oft used to wander or dream
71: Or follow each change of your childish wills
72: Like the dance of some gay sunbeam?"-
73: Then, alas, from right weeping I could not refrain,
74: For indeed all those things I remembered again,-
75: As of yesterday they did seem.

76: And I thought of a day in a far lost Spring,
 77: When the sun with a kiss set the wild flowers free;
78: When my heart felt the kiss and the shadowy wing
79: Of some beautiful spirit of things to be,
80: Who breathed in the song that the wild birds sing
81: Some deep tender meaning for me,-
82: Who undid a strange spell in the world as it were,
83: Who set wide sweet whispers abroad in the air,-
84: Made a presence I could not see.

85: O that whisper my heart seemed to understand!
86: O that spell it took hold on right willing feet!
87: To that beautiful spirit I gave my hand,
88: And he led me that day up the village street,
89: And out through the fields and the fragrant land,
 90: And on through the pathways sweet;
91: Yea, still on, with a semblance of some new bliss,
92: Through the world he has led me from that day to this
93: With a tender and fair deceit.

94: "O for what have you wandered so far-so long?"
95: Said the voice that was e'en as my voice of old:
96: "O for what have you done to the Past such wrong?
97: Was there no fair dream on your own threshold?
98: In your childhood's home was there no fresh song?
99: -Was your heart then all so cold?
100: Why, at length, are you weary and lone and sad,
101: But for casting away all the good that you had
102: With the peace that was yours of old?

103: "Have you wholly forgotten the words you said,
104: When you stood by a certain mound of earth,
105: When you vowed with your heart that that place you made
106: The last burial place for your love and your mirth,
107: For the pure past blisses you therein laid
108: Were surely your whole life's worth?-
109: O, the angels who deck the lone graves with their tears
110: Have cared for this, morning and evening, for years,
111: But of yours there has been long dearth:

112: "In the pure pale sheen of a hallowed night,
113: When the graves are looking their holiest,
114: You may see it more glistering and more bright
 115: And holier-looking than all the rest;
116: You may see that the dews and the stars' strange light
 117: Are loving that grave the best;
118: But, perhaps, if you went in the clear noon-day,
119: After so many years you might scarce find the way
120: Ere you tired indeed of the quest:

 121: "For the path that leads to it is almost lost;
122: And quite tall grass-flowers of sickly blue
123: Have grown up there and gathered for years, and tost
 124: Bitter germs all around them to grow up too;
125: For indeed all these years not a man has crost
 126: That pathway-not even You!"-
127: But alas! for these words to my heart he sent,
128: For I knew it was Marguеrite's grave that he meant,
129: And I felt that the words were true.

130: Then the dim sweet faces of them of yore
 131: Seemed to start from the mist where the memory lies;
 132: And each one was as sweet and as dear as before;
133: But a piteous look was in all their eyes-
134: Yea, the long smile of sadness; and each one bore
135: A reproach in some tender wise:
136: Till my bosom was troubled and sorely thrilled
137: With the thought of them all, and my ears were filled
138: With a sound of the mingling of sighs.

139: And my heart, where the memories of them were cast
140: And as buried and choked in the dust of the years,
 141: Became peopled, it seemed, with the shapes of the Past;
142: And the voice of my brother grew fresh in my ears:
143: So my dried up eyes were softened at last
 144: To weeping some few sweet tears;
145: But the Man who was sitting at my fireside-
146: He covered his face with his hands and cried
147: As I did in those earlier years.

148: Then I faltered,-"O Spectre of my lost Youth!
149: All too well at thy pleading the sad thoughts wake,
150: With the bitter regret of the Past, and in truth
 151: The whole love of the fair things that all men forsake;
152: And for this thy reproach I am filled with ruth-
153: My heart seemeth nigh to break:
154: Ah! right gladly would I now return with thee
155: To those loves and those lovers; if that might be,
156: And be happy for their sweet sake.

157: "And, O Spectre that wearest my look-my face,
158: And art ever with them as the thought they keep
159: To remind them of me in the changeless place
160: In the changeless Past where the memories sleep,-
161: Do thou tell them I am not all barren of grace,
162: Nor have buried their love so deep,
163: But that now after so long toward them I yearn,
164: And that often the thought of them all may return,
165: And that often it makes me weep."

166: Then, alas! I was troubled and filled with shame,
 167: As I looked on His face and beheld him fair;
 168: For his locks were as gold, and his eyes as a flame;
169: And I knew that one winter had blanched my hair,
170: And that surely my looks were no longer the same
171: As in earlier days they were:
172: For I feared he should mock me and tell them of this,
173: And that even my tears were but scant beside his.
174: O, this thought was a hard one to bear!

175: But at length I fell dreaming beneath the might
 176: Of each spell of the Past whence I cared not to start;
177: And I saw Him some time by the flickering light,
 178: As the one in my dream who was playing my part;
179: Till his semblance grew dim and was gone from my sight
180: As a dream of the Past will depart.
181: Then the Spirit whose beauty has led me till now,
182: Came and breathed a sweet breath on my feverish brow,
183: And the strain of this verse in my heart.
