For over a century, the search for a theory of quantum gravity has resembled attempts to build a bridge between two incompatible shores. On one shore lies General Relativity (GR), where time is dynamic, relative, and an integral part of the plastic geometry of spacetime. All major approachesfrom string theory to loop quantum gravityin one way or another attempt to "quantize" geometry while leaving time in its classical role.
