I've lost a friend of mine while you talk of the state. I've lost a friend of mine, you talk of people's wisdom To hell with lousy state with only price at stake, To hell with lousy people where slavery is freedom. I've lost a friend of mine, and I have lost my way. And we've lost something more than just the state and nation. It's hard for us to find ourselves by voice today. Now shots around the corner, now rocket's reverberation I was his alter ago, he was the same to me We never caught each other in lies or a deception. Not every state is friend. He was a state for me. And as a good exception, he was my own nation. He's Georgian, I am Russian. The Caucasus is hell. A senseless war is on between the friendly people And if my friend is dead, my folks are dead as well And if my friend is killed, my state is killed, the cripple. We can't glue down the state that fell out of hand. But even in the graves with no commemoration A friend is never dead. That's why he is a friend, You can't set up a cross and cross the state and nation. |

Yevgeny Yevtushenko THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING (Translated from the Russian by Alec Vagapov) |

A lot of people hate me ascribing blames on me They fulminate against my personality They laugh at me hysterically, glumly, looking black, I feel their unfriendly looks behind my back. But, I should say, I like it, I'm proud of one thing: No matter how they try it They can't do anything I look upon their bickering with sneer and disdain I banter them on purpose and make my meaning plain. They know me inside out, at times I'm two foot small, Confused and all worn out I am about to fall. But, I should say, I like it, I'm proud of one thing: No matter how they try it They can't do anything. I do not force a smile when hearing them say That I'm self-assertive, adroit in every way. I know that all is wrong and although my heart is shut I don't know why on earth they should envy me like that. But, I should say, I like it, I'm proud of one thing: No matter how they try it They can't do anything |

IMMIGRANT / THE GIRL FROM NY CITY (Translated from the Russian by Alec Vagapov) |
|
Pretty girl is from New York City, She is alien and isn't safe. She is fleeing from neon glitter And away from her own self. She just hates this hateful reality, Hissed off moralist, off its head, What she needs is the truth and fidelity, She's got whistling and hissing instead. With a strange hairdo, wearing glasses, Dressed in sweater, rugged and loose, The negation, thin as a lath, is Rambling round in high heeled shoes. It appears, the world is mendacious, Holy Bible, the press and so on... There're Montecchis and Capuletis But Romeos and Juliets are gone. Pretty girl is from New York City, She is alien and isn't safe. She is fleeing from neon glitter And away from her own self. From her thoughts all the trees are wilting, And the moon, slightly tipsy and grey, Like a beatnik, is leisurely limping Up and down Milky Broadway Walls and roofs... they are all so terrible. And above, as a matter of course, Television antennas resemble Crucifixion without a cross Pretty girl is from New York City, She is alien and isn't safe. She is fleeing from neon glitter And away from her own self. |

THAT'S NOT ALL YET |
|
That's not all yet... We are young, You doubt it? That's not all yet... We should think about it Knowing that we aren't enemies That's not all yet... Truly, I've got this to say That's not all yet... You are gone, but, anyway, Anyway, help me, help me please. Help me so that I Might be happy, faithful. Help me, Help me please! Help me so that you Might be first and utmost love of mine! Help me please once again, For I want to wait on crossroads, Help me please! What I want is to wait ages long Amidst teenagers. Wait... That's not all yet... You will get it, probably. That's not all yet! Willow murmur chorally Rustling in your tender hands, That's not all yet! Morning sunlight in the sky That's not all yet! With the flying birds who cry Fading tenderly in clouds Help me so that I Might be happy, faithful Help me please! Help me so that you Might be first and utmost love of mine! Help me please once again, For I want to wait on crossroads, Help me please! What I want is to wait ages long Amid teenagers. Wait... |
