  A Kind Spruce. A New Year's Story.

Mosya, a small white Bolognese toy dog, ran happily alongside Mama Nina.

"Mama Nina"-that's what Mosya called his owner.

Mama Nina stopped and started talking to a woman. Mosya ran around, tugging at his leash.

Mama Nina bent down, detached the leash from his collar, and said to Mosya, "Run around, but be close, don't run away."

Mosya was very aware of his surroundings. He was running nor far of Mama Nina, examining the trees and benches nearby.

A torn piece of a plastic bag caught Mosya's attention. Mosya buried his nose in it.

Suddenly, a loud, menacing bark sounded right next to Mosya's ear (or so it seemed to Mosya). It was clearly the bark of a huge dog. Mosya, frightened, took off running.

At last, he had escaped the dangerous, huge, menacing dog.

Mosya stopped. Mama Nina was nowhere to be seen. The surrounding area was unfamiliar.

Mosya tried to find Mama Nina, but the area was unfamiliar, and Mosya became even more frightened.

He crawled under a car and hid behind a wheel.

People were walking past the car. A terrible cat passed nearby and glanced at Mosya. Mosya was trembling and he was waiting for Mama Nina.

Evening had fallen. It was getting darker and colder. Mosya was hungry and thirsty. Sitting under the car and hiding behind a wheel was already impossible.

Mosya began to run somewhere, without any aim.

In the darkness, he saw some kind of light, some kind of sparkling, a tree surrounded by glowing and sparkling garlands. Mosya remembered that once, a long time ago, he had walked with Mama Nina past a similar tree sparkling with garlands and he barked joyfully at the shiny toys hanging on it.

The tree stood in the middle of a small square filled with adults and children. There were no big, angry dogs nearby. Mosya ran up to the sparkling tree and sat down close to it.

A girl approached Mosya: "What's your name? My name is Ira."

Ira petted of Mosya. Mosya was silent and trembling.

Ira was petting Mosya. She felt, that he was trembling. "Where are your owners?" Ira asked. Mosya only remained silent and trembling.

Ira picked Mosya up in her arms. She was carring him somewhere. She entered the building, climbed the stairs, and rang the doorbell.

  A woman opened the door.

"A very nice dog!" Ira told the woman. "I found her under the New Year's tree in the square!"

"Irochka! You know we can't take a dog to us. We already have a canary, a cat, and an aquarium with fish!"

"I'll just feed the dog and give it some water!" Ira replied.

She left Mosya in the hallway and brought him some water and cat food.

Hungry, Mosya ate some cat food and lapped up some water.

Ira petted Mosya: "How beautiful you are. And with a collar."

Ira's fingers found a small metal medallion attached to Mosya's collar. A phone number was engraved on the medallion.

"Mom, I found a phone number on the dog's collar! Can I call this phone number?"

  "Call."

Soon the doorbell rang. Mama Nina and Kolya arrived. Kolya handed Ira a box of chocolates, and Mama Nina gave Ira a bag of Christmas tree decorations.

Mama Nina put Mosya on a leash and she walked outside, with Mosya and with Kolya.

Ira was examining the bag of Christmas tree decorations when her dad arrived with a Christmas tree bought at the Christmas tree market.

"Hurray!" Ira shouted and began hanging the decorations on the tree.

Mosya, Mama Nina, and Kolya were walking across the square past the sparkling Christmas tree.

Mosya saw the shiny decorations hanging on the tree and barked joyfully.

"Ira is a good girl," Kolya said to Mama Nina. "I'd like to be friends with her!"

"If you're walking with Mosya, near the Christmas tree, and you see Ira, invite her to visit us," Mama Nina replied.

  Mosya barked happily again.
