They gave money for a film! It's a chance of success! And what kind of success should it be? There's little hope for Soviet awards; we have plenty of our own contenders. They-these head-shaking bronze effigies-can't be pushed aside!
So I need to aim for the Oscars!
What's the film about? Will I shooting (in this film) Vera? I will. Fine. A film about a girl who comes to Moscow seeking success.
It will be a role for Vera.
A girl arrives in Moscow. How does she start? She begins studying. She marries a future director, who will shoot her (his wife) in his films.
Well, who would like that?
Do modern girls enjoy studying?... Do they immediately, at the beginning of their independent adult lives, marry? They marry the future film directors?
It's a new era, new time now. With such a plot, the film is guaranteed to fail. The chance for success will be squandered.
A girl arrives in the capital. She falls victim to deception from side of a man. A quick sex, a coincidence of events. She's alone. But she doesn't give in. Yes, it's realistic, they'll swallow it.
And then, like in a fairy tale, she suddenly becomes a boss, a big shot. Yes, despite all this, she's single. But that's the era we live in.
That's all well and good... But realism needs to be smoothly translated into a sweet fairy tale. A man falls in love with this female boss.
Who is this man? A janitor? No! A scientist? No! An athlete? No! A cosmonaut? (An astronaut?) No! A military? No!
If I am aiming for an Oscar, then maybe he's a member of the working class aristocracy? He's simple, and he's smart enough. He's financially secure, basically.
The working class aristocracy in any country-the USA, the UK, the USSR-everywhere, everywhere...-lives relatively well, if they don't have any pretensions, if if they are submerged in their own domestic and personal affairs.
Excellent! A provincial girl (Vera will play her) comes to the capital in search of adulthood and success. She doesn't marry, she doesn't tie the knot with the future director who will shoot her in his films. She falls victim to a man's deception. The man is involved in making a child (together with her) and disappears. But she-like in a fairy tale-becomes a big boss. She's a boss, but she's not married, she's a lonely woman. But suddenly-like in a fairy tale-she meets a relatively respectable man, a member of the working class aristocracy. And they, adults, they are happy! "You have your whole life ahead of you! Just hope and wait!"
