Выхожу
Выхожу.
Рифмы, ритма и лада
Не желаю,
Не надо.
Выхожу из раз -
Мера,
Мира,
Вера.
Выхожу и, глядя в упор, иду на вас:
Я -
Рост, вес, цвет волос, цвет глаз.
Инструкция по эксплуатации:
Любить.
Михаил Л.Герштейн 1978, Горький (Н. Новгород)

Stepping out Mikhail L. Gershteyn self-translation
I'm stepping out without
Melody, Rhythm or Rhyme,
Stepping out of measures,
Stepping out of Time,
I think only of what matters.
And please learn it by Heart:
I am here to love you
And be ardently loved.
1978, N. Novgorod, Russia
2
Stepping out Translated by Arkady Gershteyn
Stepping out
Of Rhythm, Rhyme, and Mode
Don't wish.
It is not necessary.
Stepping out of..
Measure
World
Belief.
Stepping out, and looking right at you, approach.
Me:
Height, weight, hair color, eye color.
User manual: to love.
Mikhail L. Gershteyn 1978, N. Novgorod, Russia
-------------------------------------
Постоянно хотеть...
Постоянно хотеть
И на что-то решаться,
И при этом не раз,
В дураках оставаться.
И считать, что застыть,
Избегая решений, -
Это самое худшее
Из поражений!
Михаил Л.Герштейн 1985, г. Горький (Н. Новгород)

Motto Mikhail L. Gershteyn, self-translation
To always desire,
and decide on something
More than once left a fool
But to think
that to stay cold,
and avoid risky decisions
Is the worst of all failures.
1985, Gorky ( N. Novgorod)
4
Motto Translated by Jane Gassko
To incessantly yearn for something,
To make high-risk decisions,
And therefore be fooled not once or twice,
But still consider indecision and stagnation
The worst of all the failures and vice.
Mikhail L. Gershteyn 1985, Gorky ( N. Novgorod)

Я, может, и хотел сидеть у столика...
Я, может, и хотел - сидеть у столика,
Смотреть дорожку солнца в океане
И впитывать волны бегущей силу,
И замечать, как розовеет небо
От соприкосновения с землёю,
Как будто бы земля немного ранит. . .
И ветер сердца чайкой пролетел.
Михаил Л.Герштейн 1998, Бостон

I might have wanted to be sitting by the table Translated by Victor Pavlenkov
I might have wanted to be sitting by the table,
To watch the road that the sun made in the ocean,
And to take in the force of an oncoming wave,
And to observe the redness of the sky
On the horizon where it meets the Earth,
As if the Earth has blooded it a bit. . .
A heartborn breeze flew by like a seagull.
Mikhail L. Gershteyn 1998, Boston
-------------------------------------
За мужество платят кровью...
За мужество платят кровью,
А за любовь - изменой.
А те, кому стало скучно,
Просто торопят смерть.
А мы ещё поиграем
С Венерой и Мельпоменой,
Огнём своим пощекочем
Гремучую жизни смесь.
Михаил Л.Герштейн 1996, Бостон

The price for the bravery - blood Translated by Victor Pavlenkov
The price for the bravery -
blood,
The price for the love -
betrayal,
And those who became bored,
Are simply hastening death...
But we will still play around
With Venus and Melpomena,
Will tickle with our fire
Explosive mixture of Life.
Mikhail L. Gershteyn 1996, Boston
-------------------------------------
Нас так мало с тобой Натали...
Нас так мало с тобой, Натали,
Даже если мосты развели,
Губы наши в поту,
Память наша в крови,
Мало нас, Натали
Очень!
Михаил Л.Герштейн 1979, г.Горький (Н.Новгород)

There is so little of us, Nately... Translated by Iosif M. Gershteyn
There's so little of us, Nataly,
When the bridges were broken,
Our lips still in sweat;
The remainder was written in blood -
Just a little of us - Nataly,
Very little.
Mikhail L Gershteyn 1979, Gorky (N. Novgorod)

Риск
Птицы
Прерывистый писк-
Риск!
Утро
Утро
Утро
Рея,
Вместе с сердцем
И часами,
Бьётся
Бьётся
Бьётся
Шея.
Утро!
Михаил Л.Герштейн 1979, г.Горький (Н.Новгород)

Risk Translated by Iosif M. Gershteyn
Birds scream ee!!!
Morning
Morning
Morning
Risk,
With my heart and watch
Beating
Beating
Beating
Neck,
Early!
Mikhail L Gershteyn 1979, Gorky (N.Novgorod)

Жизнь начинается сегодня...
Жизнь начинается сегодня,
И жизнь кончается сегодня.
Вчерашнее - как дом пустой,
А завтрашнее - пес голодный.
А мне нужны и дом, и пес,
Чтоб я в сегодняшнее врос.

Today"s the day that life began Translated by Arkady Gershteyn, Boris Gershteyn
Today"s the day that life began
Today"s the day that life shall end
All yesterdays are dusty ways
All future days are dreamer"s race
I need all ways and dreamer"s race
For sake of day that starts and ends.
Mikhail L. Gershteyn 1984, Gorky (N. Novgorod)

Евреи
О, вечный наш поход,
Безумный наш рассчёт,
Движенье языка всему наоборот.
И пламенное нет,
И непрерывный спор,
О, вечный наш полёт всему наперекор.
Раскачка наших тел,
И мыслей, и судьбы.
О, вечный наш отряд оставшихся в пути.
Михаил Л.Герштейн 1998, Бостон

Jews Translated by Anatol Zukerman
This is our infinite journeys
And cleverly crazy business,
The tongue that always enjoys
To argue with other speeches.
This is our feverish no
In never ending discussions,
Traveling to and fro,
Flying against all currents.
The tough skin of our fate,
The stubbornness of our thought,
This is our eternal front
of those who stay on the road.
Mikhail L. Gershteyn 1998, Boston

The Yard Translated by Anna Leah Eisner and Alyssa Lee Dillon
The yard is truly gone,
Yet for some reason
I brought it with me to America,
And without it, life would be humdrum.
There we are on the bench:
My older brother Ilya,
With him, his friend Yurka Grebnev,
And I, the younger, inspired liar, (l
Brag how I pummelled Minka,
The boy from the neighboring yard.
And out comes Sergei Kuvshinov,
The head of a large and reckless family
With a deaf sister and gangster sons.
There were rumors: Sergei himself was a gangster
And drowned his bride by the Baltics.
He brought us mushrooms to try,
Cold, tender, slippery, crisp,
The tastiest of all...
And Sergei wore thick glasses
And a abrupt, open smile,
And his voice - bass, logical, simple
In the winter, we"d throw ourselves
From his barn - as if shot - into the snow.
Schwartz David joined us in the yard,
Our neighbor from the second floor.
At War he served in the penalty battalion
For having wounded an officer in the leg,
For being called a Kike.
David comes to the yard, takes a seat at the table
And soon, soon
Grown men will sit with him,
And summer evening conversation,
Swaying in the air, will start to flow unhurried.
I lose myself in their memories, and listen ravenously
To stories about the attacks during the war,
And how little mice were exterminated in Kazakhstan
And water brought to the virgin land.
Muska the cat sits by the window
Her green eyes shine, shine, shine for me
And the darkness of the yard,
Like a blanket,
Lulls me to sleep in America.

Я к тебе подключаюсь
Маше
Я к тебе подключаюсь.
Есть контакт! От винта!
Я тобой наполняюсь,
Как водой пустота.
Я тебя обнимаю,
Как морской ветерок,
Я в тебя зарываюсь,
Как ребёнок в песок.
Бог, с его океаном,
Небом, солнцем, луной,
Улыбается рядом,
Восхищаясь тобой.

I'm connecting to you Translated by Iosif M. Gershteyn
Fire hot - our current
Lights our way in the dark
The electric, the urgent
Joins us never to part
I hug you so tightly
Like the sea touches stars
Bury secrets inside you
Lonely child on Mars
G-d, with his infinite ocean
Pale blue sky, sun, and moon
Smiles kindly beside us
Finding light in your bloom

Я русское помню, я русское знаю...
Я русское помню,я русское знаю,
Рубаху порвав,закричать: пропадаю!
И быстро напиться горячей тоской,
Такой упоительной и молодой!
Я сам в этом поле бродил, был затерян,
Там бродит и ныне Серёжа Есенин,
Я сам всей своею еврейскою страстью
Врезался в российское горькое счастье.
Михаил Л.Герштейн 1997 , Бостон

I remember the Russian thing , I"m aware of it Translated by Natalie Blokhina
I remember the Russian thing , I"m aware of it
How one screams "I am lost" having torn body shirt
How one"s drunk to the full with the hottest of grief
Which is so ravishing, young and it adds a new twist
I"d been lost in that field, I"d been rambling around
Where our famous Esenin"s still maundering about
With all my Jew passion I used to entrench
Into that grievous thing always called Russian wrench.
Mikhail L Gershteyn 1997 , Boston

Не словами, а через слова
Не словами, а через слова
Прорасту в твою живую душу.
То что я скажу-ты сам сказал,
Я продиктовал... или подслушал.
Михаил Л.Герштейн 2004, Бостон

Not with words, but through them Translated by Natalie Blokhina
I will spring into your living soul
Not with words, but through them
What I"ll say - it"s you who set it forth
I dictated it...or overheard well...
Mikhail L Gershteyn 2004, Boston

Мы
Мы фразу начинаем словом нет,
Всегда вопрос имеем на ответ.
И видим очень много лиц в упор,
Когда идём толпе наперекор.
Михаил Л.Герштейн1998, Бостон

We Translated by Natalie Blokhina
We start each phrase with "no" word
For every answer question"s sought
We see lots of faces point blank
When crowd turns to counter stand
Mikhail L. Gershteyn 1998, Boston
-------------------------------------
Весь воздух молчаньем горбат
Весь воздух молчаньем горбат,
Горбатым вопросом изрыт,
Ты прячешься всё от меня,
Не то говоришь, что болит.
Ты прячешься всё от меня,
А боль глубже, горше, тупей,
И всё холоднее глаза,
И в комнате всё холодней.
Михаил Л. Герштейн 1996, Бостон

The air is humpbacked with hush Translated by Natalie Blokhina
The air is humpbacked with hush
It"s trenched with the broken-back why,
You"re hiding from me in a rush,
Concealing what hurts you, what bites
You"re hiding from me in a rush,
Pain gets form which is dull and deep,
The eyes keep up turning like ice,
The room gets so cold in still
Mikhail L. Gershteyn 1996, Boston

Париж излишеств, устриц, ног...
Париж излишеств, устриц, ног,
И тесноты людской общины,
Где только жизнь есть жить предлог,
Где нет ни цели, ни причины,
Где так преступно вкусно - быть
И тело разделять со всеми,
И ночью сквозь огни проплыть
С водой неторопливой Сены.
Михаил Л.Герштейн 1999, Париж

That Paris of surfeit, big oysters and legs Translated by Natalie Blokhina
That Paris of surfeit, big oysters and legs,
Crammed quarters of human race,
Where life is simply pretence to live With no certain reason, no aim
It is such a criminal sweetness - to be
To share one"s body with men
To swim through night lights low-speed
With water of laidback Seine
Mikhail L. Gershteyn 1999, Paris

Я встал с утра в любви
Я встал с утра в любви,
На третьем этаже.
Увидел белый свет,
Что в окна бил уже.
Увидел белый снег,
Летящий с высоты,
Стремительный, густой,
Такой как любишь ты.
И небо на Земле,
И небо в вышине,
И между ними всё
Принадлежало мне.
