EUGENE ONEGIN |
A Novel in Verse |
With no intention to entertain, |
In love with friendship and regard, |
What I would like is to explain |
A pledge that's worthy of your heart, |
That's worthy of the soul unsmeared, |
Of sacred and completed dream, |
Poetic feelings, loud and clear, |
Of lofty thoughts and easy mien; |
But sorry, with a hand that's biased |
Accept the heap of patchy drafts, |
Half-laughable, half-downhearted |
Uneducated, undivided, |
Capricious fruit of joyful laughs, |
Of sleepless nights and inspirations, |
Of immature and withered years, |
Of mind's cold observations |
And sole's pitiful concerns. |
CHAPTER ONE |
My uncle of the highest codes, |
When he became very ill, |
He claimed respect from all his folks, |
And there was no better deal. |
He is exemplary for others, |
But, don't tell me how it bothers |
To nurse a dummy day and night |
With no single step aside! |
It is so vicious to beguile, |
To entertain a moron, |
To serve him medicine with a smile |
To straighten pillows with a moan, |
To sigh while thinking: all goes well: |
Be quick and go straight to hell. |
That was the young heartbreaker's vision |
While riding stagecoach in the mud, |
By Jove's excellent decision |
Being heir to all ancestral blood. |
Supporters of my previous glory |
With hero of this novel story |
Not waiting for another chance |
Let me acquaint you at once. |
Onegin was my close buddy, |
Who lived on Northern river shore |
Where also you may have been born |
Or showed brilliance in study. |
I thither had my better days, |
But in the North I have no grace. |
Although serving very nobly, |
His father lived in great default, |
Three banquets celebrated yearly |
And his finances went to naught. |
Eugeni's fate was very kind: |
A French Madame for him was hired, |
To be replaced by the Monsieur. |
The child was brisk and very fair. |
Monsieur l'Abbe,
Not to exhaust the poor kid, |
Monsieur l'Abbe, a shabby bloke |
Regarded teaching as a joke, |
His words were never very strict, |
The boy was scolded and pardoned |
And daily walked to Summer Garden. |
And when of stormy youth and anguish |
The time came to Eugene, |
The time of hopes and tender languish, |
Monsieur |
Monsieur was driven from the scene. |
At last, Eugene is liberated |
His hair stylishly updated, |
Dressed like a dandy at the court, |
He finally could see the world. |
He could explain himself and write; |
Could easily Mazurka stride |
And bowed smartly at receptions; |
What more? The world resolved at once |
That he was smart and very nice. |
From time to time we have been taught |
A little something here and there, |
Thus, education, praised be God, |
Is very easy to display. |
Onegin was, as thought by many, |
(the judges resolute and canny), |
Perhaps a little too high-browed, |
With an ability endowed |
To touch on something unawares, |
With learned air of a pro, |
With no commitment, so and so, |
To save his words on big affairs, |
And to arouse ladies' smiles |
With fire of unexpected rhymes. |
Thus, if you want to know the truth, |
To read the names on the tombs, |
To have a chat on Juvenalis, |
To end his letters with the VALEs, |
And knew, though not without offense |
From Aeneid a few refrains. |
He had no wishes to aspire |
to the chronology of dust, |
And read descriptions of the past, |
But jokes of the days gone by |
From Romulus to our time |
He kept retained in his mind. |
While having no great desire |
To trade his life for sounds and words |
Iambus from prosodic rhyme |
Could he distinguish not for worlds, |
He chided Ancient Greece's poets, |
Being a profound economist, |
And having studied Adam Smith |
His comprehension was complete, |
On how mighty is the State, |
And how it lives, and why the hell |
It needs no gold in its cells |
When it can do a simple trade. |
His father didn't understand, |
And got a mortgage on his land. |
All that involved Eugeni's verdict, |
It would be hard for me to tell, |
But where he was a real expert, |
Where he could really excel, |
What was since he was just a boy |
Both labor, torture and a joy, |
What occupied the whole time |
His lazy sadness and his mind, |
It was the science of tender passion, |
Which was by Naso glorified, |
Who then was duly sacrificed |
To end his life in dire fashion, |
In the Moldova's desert lands, |
Far from his Italy and friends. |
He was deceitful very early, |
Could fuel hope, jealous love, |
He could dissuade and make pretences, |
Seem gloomy, like a randy dove, |
Could be so arrogant and heedful, |
Could be considerate or wistful! |
He was now silent for a while, |
And now eloquent like fire, |
In tender letters so callous! |
To breathe one name, tender love, |
How he renounced his own self! |
His glance could be so quick and jealous, |
Reserved and haughty, and at times |
With tame tears in his eyes. |
How could he pose a novel image, |
By joke innocence surprise, |
Intimidate with ready courage, |
With pleasing flattery reprise, |
Could capture moments of deep emotion, |
Through sinless years retained caution, |
Could conquer using thoughtful passion |
Await involuntary brushing, |
Entreat and claim a confession, |
To catch the first beat of devotion, |
And later with a sudden motion |
Achieve a clandestine session |
Then in a solitary place |
Deliver lessons face to face |
How early he produced reaction |
Within the hearts of ballroom flirts! |
But when he wished to bring destruction |
To the adversaries of his, |
O, how spitefully he slurred! |
What smarmy traps for them prepared! |
And you, the husbands of your wives |
With him sustained friendly ties: |
He was esteemed by artful consort, |
A long-time student of Foblas, |
And a distrustful man, alas! |
And a majestic man with horns, |
Content and happy with his life, |
And with his dinner and his wife. |
While yet in early morning doze, |
They bring the notes to his sight. |
What? Invitations, I suppose, |
Three houses want him for the night: |
There is a ball, there is a feasting, |
Where would he now go whisking? |
Where will he start? At any rate |
He is in time, never late. |
Meanwhile still in early clothes |
Wearing a spacious bolivar |
Onegin drives to the Boulevard, |
And there at liberty he strolls, |
Until his timepiece would chime |
The long-awaited dinner time. |
It goes dusky, sledge is ready. |
"Move on! - the loud voice is raised; |
With silver dust in frosty weather |
His beaver collar is ablaze. |
He rushed to Talon: no doubt, |
Kaverin is lounging about. |
He enters: cork into the ceiling, |
The comet wine squirted thrilling; |
The roast-beef is oozing blood, |
And truffles, joy of early life, |
And the pate de foie gras, |
Between the Limburg cheese alive |
And pineapple of golden light. |
The thirst is asking for more wine |
To pore down fatty meet, |
But then BrИguet's another chime |
Reports the ballet show time. |
The inconsistent adulator, |
Of actresses who dance and sing, |
The theater's wicked legislator, |
The constant dweller of the wings, |
To theater Onegin hurried, |
To clap and show admiration |
Готов охлопать entrechat, |
Where everyone is only worried, |
To boo and heckle on occasion, |
To cry encore and to rejoice |
At making others hear his voice. |
O, fancy land! In old times, |
There was Fonvisin, freedom fighter |
The bold ruler of Satire, |
And then Kniazhnin who borrowed smartly, |
There, inadvertent contributions, |
Spectators' thankful retributions |
Were shared by old and young likewise. |
Was there and then revitalized, |
Cornelius' majestic name |
The pungent comedy playwrights |
Paraded their offensive hives, |
The great Didelot was crowned with fame, |
And in the bustle of stargazing |
My youthful days were rushing crazy. |
My goddesses! Where are you lasses? |
Eavesdrop to my heartbreaking rue: |
Are you still there, maybe others |
Have wrongly substituted you? |
Shall I again hear your choir? |
Shall I get lucky to admire |
The soul throbbing in a flight? |
Or else my glance will fail to find |
Familiar faces of attraction, |
And, aiming at higher class |
The disappointed eyeglass, |
The listless viewer of the action, |
I shall be yawning very wide, |
Nostalgic of the days gone by. |
The house is crammed; the boxes glitter, |
The stalls and chairs are ablaze; |
The gods above applause and jitter, |
The noisy curtain is upraised. |
An airy nymph is all aglow, |
Obedient to the magic bow, |
Surrounded by fairies' throng, |
The thrilling dancer stands alone. |
Touching the floor with little toes, |
And then around she goes and flips, |
All of a sudden she is afloat, |
Like down from Aeolus' lips; |
Her body wrapping and unwrapping, |
While the tiny feet go tapping. |
All clapping. And Onegin enter |
Between the chairs, kicking legs, |
His double lorgnette being skewed off-center |
On clusters of the fair sex. |
He scrutinizes all the rows, |
Familiar sight: attires, robes, |
All those things would make him spout |
And nod to all familiar crowd. |
His fleeting look in great distraction |
Would go further to the stage |
Then he would yawn and turn away |
And say: where is their old attraction? |
I have been patient with the ballet, |
But now it starts to make me scary. |
The Cupids, demons, imps and serpents |
Still jump and clatter on the boards, |
And while yet the weary servants |
Sleep on the coats at entrance doors, |
Still there is no end to tramping, |
To nose blowing, hissing, clapping, |
Still both inside and outside |
Are lanterns glittering and bright, |
Still chilling horses go bumping, |
Bored of their harnesses and ties, |
The coachmen around fires |
Scold masters swearing and stamping, |
Onegin is on home ride |
To change clothes for the night. |
Shall I depict in picture vivid |
A very lonely study room, |
Where fashion-monger shy and timid |
Is many times dressed and groomed? |
All that for wildest desires |
The graceful London offers buyers, |
And all the way through Baltic waves |
Is brought to us for logs and grains, |
All that the hungry Paris taste |
Invents by choosing useful crafts, |
For luxury, for vogue and lust, |
For fun and pleasurable games |
Those things made up a standard rig |
Of an eighteen-year-old wig. |
The amber on the pipes from Turkey, |
The porcelain and enameled brass, |
And, joy of senses very murky, |
Perfume in faceted cut-glass |
Great many combs and little files, |
And brushes thousands of kinds |
Scissors of straight and crooked blades, |
Both for teeth and for the nails. |
Rousseau (excuse me for a gap) |
Could never dig, why haughty Grim |
Could groom his nails in front of him, |
The great and eloquent madcap. |
The guard of liberty and rights, |
In this case he was not quite right. |
One can well be a worthy person |
While taking care of one's attire: |
The custom is a great oppressor, |
Why should you argue with the time? |
Eugenie, fearing sensation, |
Afraid of jealous condemnation, |
Was too pedantic in his looks |
And used to dress by fashion books. |
He was for hours on end |
In front of mirrors and perfumes |
And came out of his room |
Like Venus, ready to attend |
A fancy ball in man's attire |
Of admiration sick and tired. |
The latest taste in modern fashion |
Being now presented to your view |
I could have done my public mission |
To give description of his suit; |
Of course, it would have been not fair, |
But to describe is my affair: |
Tuxedo, vest, and underdrawers, |
And as I see, I am to blame, |
Because my poor old style |
Could stop pronouncing all the while |
The overseas and foreign names, |
Though I read glossaries at times |
By the Academy of Science. |
We now have another story, |
Let's better go to a ball, |
Where like a bolt in a hurry |
Onegin has already gone. |
Alongside the extinguished homes |
Along the drowsy street in rows |
The dual lanterns of the sleds |
Are splashing out light and mirth, |
Projecting rainbows on the snow; |
Alight with candles all around |
Is glittering a splendid house, |
The window frames flash and glow, |
Displaying figures and profiles |
Of dames and fashionable guys. |
My hero rode to the portal |
And past the doorman he would rush |
On marble staircase exalted, |
He trimmed his hair with a brush, |
He enters, and the hall is teaming, |
The music tired of its dinning; |
He is amidst the dancing crowd |
Commotion and stir all around; |
The spurs of cavalry are jingling, |
The ladies' feet are flying by; |
Along their traces glances fly, |
While burning souls go tingling. |
And crushed by roaring strings and pipes |
Is whisper of the fancy wives. |
In days of joys and aspirations |
I held dance balls in high regard |
No better place for declarations |
Or for disclosure of heart. |
You, spouses of recognition! |
To you I owe the highest mission: |
Please take a note of my discourse: |
I want to sound the warning chords. |
You too, little mothers, do beware, |
And hold straight your looking glass, |
Or else... it will be late, alas, |
To follow daughters with great care. |
The reason of what I say has been |
That nowadays I never sin. |
Alas! for different amusements |
I wasted quite a lot of guts. |
If not for morals being abused, |
I would still favor them like nuts. |
I love the crazy youthful jokes, |
And ladies' thoughtful taste in clothes, |
And narrow space, and sparks of glee, |
I love their legs, but only hardly |
In all of Russia as a whole |
There are some slender legs at all. |
I couldn't forget them so long, |
Two legs...I am so sad and cold, |
They trouble my heart, or so it seems, |
I still remember them in dreams. |
In what remote and lonely desert |
Will you forget them, crazy being? |
O legs, o legs, where are you present? |
Where do you crush the flowers of spring? |
You have been raised in Eastern splendor, |
You never left your trail slender |
On wretched snow of the North. |
You loved the splendid carpet cloth, |
Its touch and brilliance of affection, |
For you I recently forgot |
The drive for fame and better lot, |
The land of fathers and detention. |
The joy of youth is gone, alas, |
As your light trail on the grass. |
Diana's breasts, the cheeks of Flora |
Are captivating, dear friends. |
Although the leg of Terpsichore |
Looks rather better to my sense. |
By promising unvalued wealth |
To the onlooker's vile stealth, |
She will involve a swarm of hopes |
By her provisional pose. |
I love her, my beloved friends, |
Beneath the lengthy table-cloth, |
In spring on meadows grassy growth, |
In winter on the fire grates, |
On mirror floors of palace hallways, |
And by the sea on granite boulders. |
I do remember tempest brewing, |
The way I envied rushing waves, |
Their haste in boisterous queuing, |
To hug her feet with love and grace. |
My only thought was with the waves, |
To kiss her dear legs I craved. |
No, never in the fiery days |
Of youth that's gone and far away |
Had I desired with trepidation |
To kiss the lips of young Armids |
Or roses of fiery cheeks, |
Or breasts so full of expectation, |
No, never passions, hot or cold |
Had thus tormented all my soul. |
I memorized a flash of pleasure |
In cherished sacramental grace |
I hold tight the happy treasure |
And feel the leg in my embrace. |
And my imagination plays, |
Again a random easy graze |
Is kindling blood in flaccid heart |
Again agony and love. |
I will not praise the naughty girls |
By casual gossip of my chords, |
They are unworthy of the words, |
Or passions inspired by themselves, |
Their words and glances lie and cheat |
Exactly like their legs and feet. |
What my Onegin? Very drowsy |
He goes home from the ball, |
While all Petersburg is rising |
Awakened by the drumming roll. |
You see a merchant and a peddler, |
A carter rambling to the center, |
A milkmaid carrying heavy weight, |
The snow cracking from her gait. |
Amid the pleasant noise of dawn |
The blinds are open; chimney stacks |
Let out smoke, blue and black, |
In paper cover, more than once |
Has opened up his wasisdas. |
But having been fatigued by ball, |
Converting morning into night, |
Is sleeping with the blissful soul |
The child of pleasure and delight. |
Waking at noon, and then again |
Till morning is his life restrained, |
Monotonous and very gay, |
Tomorrow same as yesterday. |
But was then happy my Eugene, |
Alone, at prime of his life, |
Amidst the never-ending fights, |
That he would always have to win? |
Was he amidst the feasts indeed |
Unmindful and very fit? |
His feelings froze rather early; |
The monde had bothered him a lot; |
The beauties soon became rarely |
The theme of his accustomed thought; |
He was fed up with all betrayals, |
The friends and friendship now failed, |
It was not always that he could |
Beef-steaks и страсбургский пирог |
Beef-steaks and other fatty food |
Flood with a bottle of Champagne |
And humorize without a break |
Under a terrible headache |
And being a scapegrace in the main, |
He loved no longer in the end |
The combat, saber, or the lead. |
In English it is called depression, |
It has been known for quite long, |
The Russians have their own expression, |
Which means that something is quite wrong. |
It seized him firmly by the throat |
To shoot himself he, praised be God, |
Intended not to give a try; |
But he instead was cooled to life. |
Like Child-Harold, morose, languished |
He would appear at receptions; |
Nor worldly talk, nor dancing sessions, |
Nor dear glance, nor sigh of anguish, |
There was just nothing to live for, |
He was concerned by nothing more. |
Sorceresses of greater monde! |
He was among the first to flee |
And it is true that at this moment |
The higher tone is ennui; |
Perhaps there may be some Madame |
Who talks on Say and on Bentham, |
But as a rule their pretty chat |
Is stupid, though harmless rat. |
Besides, they are so chaste and nice, |
So majestic, so clever, |
So full of piety and fervor, |
So farsighted and precise, |
So impregnable for sin, |
That their aspect produces spleen. |
And you, oh, beauties juvenile, |
Who in late hours of the night |
Are taken off by carriage wild |
Along the Petersburg quayside |
You are abandoned by Eugene, |
The maverick of stormy scenes, |
Onegin locked himself inside, |
And yawning, took a pen to write, |
He started writing, but fatigue |
To him was nauseous; nothing then |
Came out of his wretched pen, |
He never joined the funny league |
Of people I would not offend, |
Belonging to the same brand. |
Frustrated at his empty soul, |
And loyal to the idle life |
He settled down with a goal |
To capture someone else's mind; |
The books were on the shelf arrayed, |
He read and read, but all in vain |
He found boredom and pretence, |
With no conscience, no sense; |
All wearing the same chains |
The old things become more old, |
And news is no news at all. |
He dumped the volumes like females, |
And dusty dynasty of books |
Were piled up in shady nooks. |
By overthrowing worldly yoke, |
Like him, avoiding extra harm, |
I won his friendship at a stroke, |
I had a liking to his charm, |
To dreams definitive compliance, |
A most unaccustomed bias, |
A pointed and chilly brain, |
I was embittered, he was grave; |
We both knew the game of passion; |
To both of us the life was bad; |
In both the heat of heart was dead; |
And both were ambushed by aggression |
Of blind Fate and human race |
In the small hours of our days. |
Who lived and thought, he is enabled |
To feel contempt to human race, |
Who has some feelings, is concerned |
By ghosts of forfeited days: |
He finds no more predilection, |
Bitten by snakes of recollection, |
Or by the tortures of remorse. |
All that may give a charming course |
To any type of conversation. |
Onegin's language got me busted, |
Then by and by I got accustomed |
To his adverse argumentation, |
And to his jokes mixed with shams, |
And to his gloomy epigrams. |
It was so often in summer time |
When the night sky above the river |
Becomes transparent and bright, |
And waters with their crazy mirror |
Reflected not Diana's face, |
Recalling love of bygone years, |
The memories of old came, |
Being sensitive and unconcerned again, |
We drank the breath of gracious air, |
In silence, like inmates from jail |
Transferred to the grove and dale, |
While asleep and unaware, |
We were conveyed by dreams likewise, |
Snatched back to young and happy life. |
With soul in profound dejection, |
And leaning on the granite wall, |
Eugeni stood in deep reflection, |
As by the Poet was recalled. |
With only sentries in the quiet |
To call aloud in the night, |
And a remote carriage sound |
All of a sudden to come around; |
A solitary boat cruising |
Could be perceived on dozing waters: |
And heard from the remote quarter |
Were singing and a gallant music. |
But most sweet of nightly games |
Is sound of Torquate octaves. |
O, Adriatic undulation, |
O Brenta, I will see its course, |
And full of novel inspiration, |
I will again hear its voice. |
Apollo's sons worship its tone; |
Through proud lyre of Albion |
I know it, it is my own. |
In Italy's nocturnal gold |
It's there, at liberty I stroll |
With a Venetian young bride, |
Now talkative, and now quiet, |
Floating in a mystery gondola; |
With her my mouth will possess |
The tongue of love and Petrarch verse. |
O, come the hour of liberation! |
Freedom will come, and we embrace, |
I roam at shore in expectation, |
Waving my hand to flying sails. |
Beneath the storms, defying waves, |
Along the sea and its crossways |
When shall I start my easy roaming? |
The shore became very boring |
Of elements hostile and crashing, |
And there, in surges of midday, |
Below the African sunrays |
I will recall the gloomy Russia |
Wherein I suffered and I loved, |
The place where I interred my heart. |
Onegin was prepared with me |
To go to strange foreign lands; |
But soon the destiny would see |
That we should part for a great length. |
By then his father passed away. |
And greedy creditors' array |
Attacked their customer in kind, |
Each in his own frame of mind. |
Eugeni, hating litigation, |
Content with assets that remained, |
Perceiving no loss or gain, |
Remitted it to their discretion, |
Divining from far away |
His old uncle's departure day. |
He suddenly received indeed |
From uncle's manager account |
That uncle was on his deathbed |
And wouldn't be too long around. |
Having perused the mournful message |
Eugene set out for the passage, |
He galloped promptly to the site, |
His mouth yawning very wide, |
Preparing for the sake of money |
To sighs, and boredom and deception, |
(That was my point of inception); |
But coming to uncle's village running, |
He found him posed on the bench |
Ready to go off the stage. |
He found a court of service folks; |
From every quarter the dead man |
Attracted both friends and foes, |
A company of burial fans. |
The dead was duly put to rest, |
And having eaten, priests and guests |
All broke up assuming airs, |
As though having some affairs. |
Here is Onegin village master, |
Of farms, and waters, lands and forests, |
Complete possessor, but before it |
The foe of order and a waster, |
Being happy that his former ways |
Were modified to something else. |
Some of the things appeared novel, |
Like hidden solitary nooks |
The coolness of the oak-grove, |
The purl and babble of the brook, |
Another day the grove and hill |
Could no longer hold him still; |
Later they made him sleep again; |
And then he saw as clear as day |
That rural boredom is the same, |
With no streets and no castles, |
No ballrooms, games of cards, |
The spleen was keeping him at bay, |
And following him day and night |
As shadow or a loyal wife. |
I have been born for peaceful life, |
For quiet sounds of the fields: |
The lire is louder in the wild, |
More vivid are creative dreams. |
Committed to the modest leisure |
I roam around the lake at pleasure, |
И far niente мой закон. |
And far niente is my law. |
My each awakening is for |
Luxuriant freedom and content, |
I read a little, sleep a lot, |
For flitting fame I crave not. |
The former years likewise were spent: |
I passed in idleness and shade |
My most fortunate of days. |
The flowers, love and rural stiffness, |
O fields! I love you with my soul. |
It is my wish to see the difference |
Between his person and my own. |
Lest my whatever gentle reader |
Or still whatever gentle printer |
Of complicated denigration |
By verifying and collation |
Reiterate ungodly lies |
That I my own pictures write, |
Like Byron, poet of the pride, |
As if we were of skill deprived |
To write the poems on someone else, |
Rather than on one's own self. |
But let me note: all the writers |
Are loyal friends of dreamy love. |
It happened when some dear items |
Were in my dreams, so that my soul |
Retained their clandestine sight; |
And later was by Muse revived: |
I thus untroubled, sang and cheered |
The girl of highland, my ideal, |
And captive women from Salgir. |
And now you, my dear friends, |
You ask me many times on end: |
"Who is the subject of your lyre? |
To whom among the maidens' throng |
Did you initiate your song? |
Whose glance, exciting inspiration |
Awarded kindly caress |
To your despondent meditation, |
Who has been worshiped by your verse?" |
Not anyone, my friends, by God! |
I came to know without reward |
Insane love and crazy rhyme |
Blessed one who managed to combine |
Those two: of course he doubled |
The sacred gibberish of verse |
By following Petrarcha's steps, |
While his heart was spared trouble, |
He caught both fame and respect, |
But I, who loved, stayed in neglect. |
The love has passed, the muse emerged, |
And cleared my obscure mind, |
Again free, again searching |
For magic sounds, senses kind; |
I write, the heart remains quiet, |
The pen does not attempt to write |
Around the unfinished poems. |
Nor women's legs, nor heads, nor toes; |
Extinguished ash will not take fire, |
I yearn; but no tears remain, |
And very soon the hurricane |
Will in my soul go quiet |
And then I will begin again |
A poem of twenty-five refrains. |
I have been doing my projection, |
The hero's name and the cast; |
Until the tale of my invention |
Acquired chapter one at last; |
I then reviewed it all around: |
The controversies are abundant, |
But I will not correct them all |
The censorship will get their toll. |
And to the pressmen for revision |
I will concede my work at last: |
Fly to the shores of Neva fast, |
My neonatal composition. |
And gain me merit that is due: |
The crooked talk, the cry and hue! |
END OF CHAPTER ONE |
CHAPTER FOUR |
The moral is in the nature of things. |
Necker |
Necker |
The less the love we give a woman, |
The greater is her love to us. |
And thus ensure her better ruin |
Amidst the captivating fuss. |
Debauchery was at times composed, |
And as a science of love was known |
Itself profusely glorifying, |
Enjoying all without loving. |
But this important fun and games |
Is worthy of the old apes |
Belonging to grandfathers' times |
Loveless' glory is out of grace |
With the majestic stately wigs. |
As well as that of scarlet heals. |
Who finds it pleasing to dissemble, |
To read the same to different tunes |
To put on air and make remember |
What has been known to quite a few. |
To hear similar objections, |
And to denounce misconceptions |
That have been not and never will |
In a thirteen-year-old girl. |
Who will endure all the threats, |
The prayers, pretended fear, oaths, |
Love letters of great length and notes, |
Deceptions, gossips, rings and tears, |
Surveillance by the aunts and mothers, |
And heavy friendship of the husbands. |
Eugeni came to these conclusions |
Within the first youth of his life, |
A victim to terrible delusions |
And unimaginable frights. |
By living habits he was spoiled, |
By some he could be disappointed |
Some things being temporary charms, |
He was exhausted with demands, |
Weary with frivolous good luck, |
Heeding in noise and in lull |
Unending murmur of the soul, |
Suppressing yawning with a laugh: |
That was how he killed his youthful fire |
By having lost the best of life. |
In love he sought no more perfection, |
But trailed someone at his best; |
Rejected - found consolation, |
Betrayed - he didn't mind rest. |
He sought for them with no thrill, |
Abandoning with no big deal |
Hardly remembering their quest. |
The same as a listless guest |
Arriving for an evening match. |
He takes a seat; they draw a score |
He is departing through back door, |
He goes to bed some winks to snatch, |
And never knows he at dawn |
Where towards the night he would be gone. |
But having got the Tanya's message, |
Onegin was touched right to the quick: |
The tender tone of maiden language |
Incited him and made him think. |
And he remembered sweet Tatiana, |
Her pale face and cheerless color, |
And a delightful sinless dream |
Was where his soul with him went in. |
Perhaps the heat of old feelings |
Had for a moment best of him, |
But he did not want to take in |
Credulity of soul ingenious. |
We now go to the place |
Where Tanya met him face to face. |
A couple of minutes they were silent, |
But then Onegin spoke withal |
And said: "you wrote to me, were so kind, |
Do not deny. I read it all: |
The trustful soul's declaration, |
Effusion of guiltless revelation |
To me, your candor is so nice; |
It brings about and it excites |
The long-ago mute sensation; |
But it is not my wish to praise you; |
I will support my I.O.U. |
By yet another revelation; |
Acknowledge please my declaration: |
I yield to your investigation. |
If I would choose my own house |
To draw around my own life, |
If to be father and a spouse |
Were happy lot for me to find; |
If ever a domestic call |
Would have attracted me at all, |
Then no doubt, except you, I |
Would never seek another bride. |
With no laudatory praise: |
Having encountered you solely, |
I would have seen you one and only |
To be the friend of my sad days |
As pledged against things of beauty. |
And would be glad to do my duty. |
"But I am created not for bliss; |
It is quite alien to my soul; |
All your perfections do not please: |
I am unworthy of them all. |
Believe me (conscience is a bail) |
Matrimony will be a pain. |
My love to you, however great, |
Will vanish in a matter of days; |
Your crying and your bitter tears |
Will not come close to my heart, |
But rather only make it hard. |
You judge yourself, what kind of fears |
Will be prepared for us by Hymen |
Perhaps for many days of fun. |
What in the world can be more cluttered |
Than in a family a wife |
Being sad through an unworthy husband, |
Alone in the day and night, |
Where husband, of her worth aware, |
(Who keeps at destiny to swear) |
Is always frowning and lull, |
Is angry and unkindly dull. |
Was it the same one you sought |
With your refined flaming soul, |
When in your innocence you wrote |
To me. And with so much thought? |
I wonder if you have the lot, |
Appointed to you by God? |
No coming back for years and dreaming; |
I won't again refresh my soul... |
My love to you is brother's feeling, |
Even more tender multifold. |
Just listen to me without reactions: |
A virgin will exchange her passions |
A lot of times for other dreams; |
With every spring will all the trees |
For the new leaves will change their foliage |
It is perhaps the will of God. |
Another love will come. Why not? |
Learn to control your own image; |
Not all like me will see you through, |
A trouble is caused by the misdo. |
That was Eugeni and his preaching, |
Completely blinded by tears, |
And no objections, hardly breathing, |
Tatiana heard him very clear |
He offered her a hand. And sadly |
(As they could say, unwittingly) |
Tatiana soundlessly reclined, |
Her languid head to him inclined; |
They walked towards home around the garden, |
They came together, and withal |
No one would blame them at all: |
There is a certain rural custom |
That can enjoy its happy rights, |
Just like the haughty Muscovites. |
You will agree, my dear mate, |
It was a very fine deal, |
The way he treated poor maid; |
He had here many times revealed |
The sheer quality of sole |
Although malevolence of folks |
Forgave not a thing in him, |
Both his enemies and kin |
(Which maybe probably the same) |
Defiled him as so-and-so. |
There is no one without a foe |
But from the friends will God us save! |
Those friends will give you only pain. |
I recollect them not in vain. |
Well, what is it? I lull to naught |
The empty and obscure visions |
And only in brackets I can note |
That there is no foul lesions |
That there is not whatever nonsense |
No commonplace or black offense, |
Having appeared on the loft |
And hailed by mundane mob, |
That your good friend with happy smile |
Within a circle of decent folks |
With no malice or dirty dopes |
Would not have said a hundred times; |
He stands for you with all his soul: |
He loves you so... as his own! |
Ahem! The reader most noble, |
Are all your kinsfolk in good esprit? |
Just let me see: to save you trouble, |
You will now learn it all from me. |
Let us consider what it is. |
Kinsfolk are mostly like this: |
We have to please them and esteem, |
And help preserve their life and limb, |
In, keeping with a folk trade, |
To visit them on Christmas day, |
Or send them greetings on the mail, |
So that the rest of the year's days |
They never think about us, |
Let their good days for ever last. |
Instead, the love of tender girls |
Is better than friendship or relations, |
On it, amid the storms and gales |
You will retain your possessions. |
Of course, you will. But vogues strife, |
The willful character of life, |
Opinions changeable flow, |
While fine gender is explosive, |
Besides, your spouse's opinion |
For any kind of virtuous wife |
Have to be somewhat recognized |
Because your loyal bride extremely |
Can be entrained in half a trice |
Satan will ever jest with vice. |
Whom then to love? And who will care? |
Who won't betray us all along? |
And who will measure all affairs |
Against the yardstick of our own? |
Who doesn't grant us defamation? |
Who fosters us with great attention? |
Who is for our vices never sorry? |
And who will never become boring? |
The vain seeker of the ghost, |
Without wasting lost attempts |
Direct your love upon yourself, |
My most venerable host! |
A worthy subject: there is none |
That would be better than this one. |
What was the issue of the meeting? |
Alas! Too easy to conjecture |
Insane suffering of feeling |
Could never stop the agitation |
Of fledgling soul, craving tension; |
No, still more with cheerless passion |
Poor Tatiana is on fire; |
Sleep will escape her bed at night |
The health and sweetness of life tone, |
A smile and virginal lie down, |
Lost is it all, an empty sound, |
And Tanya's youth is nearly gone: |
Thus clads the shadow of the storm |
The day that has been hardly born. |
Alas! The poor Tatiana is fading, |
Remaining pale, dim and silent. |
To her there is no entertaining, |
And there is nothing to stir her mind. |
Wagging their heads with inspiration, |
The neighbors talk in agitation: |
The time is ripe for her to marry... |
But that is it. I have to hurry |
To cheer up imagination |
With pictures of a happy love, |
Involuntarily, don't laugh, |
I only feel commiseration; |
Forgive me that. I love her so. |
Tatiana is part of my soul. |
Each hour adding captivation |
By Olga's beauty of the young, |
Vladimir to the sweet detention |
Was dedicated with all heart. |
Never apart. And in her room |
They sit for hours in the gloom, |
And in the garden, all along |
They walk long time after dawn; |
Then what? With love intoxicated, |
Emboldened by Olga's smile |
He ventures only from time to time, |
With tender shame inundated |
To touch a spritely lock of hair, |
Or kiss a hem of robe dare. |
Quite often he would read to Ola |
A novel of didactic slant, |
Whereof the author knows morals |
Far better than Chateaubriand, |
In the meantime two or three pages |
(Quite hazardous for hearts of virgins |
Just empty nonsense, silly fad), |
He misses out blushing red. |
Aloof from all the living world |
Bent over above the board of chess, |
Leaning their elbows on the desk, |
And frozen in the deep of thought, |
When Lenskoy with a single pawn |
Removes his rook and it is gone. |
If he goes home, then not seldom |
He is still busy with her reflections. |
The flying leaflets of the album |
He ornaments with illustrations. |
He paints there rural grounds, |
A tombstone, a Kiprida shrine, |
A little pigeon on a lyre |
With pen and paints very light; |
Or else upon memorial leaves, |
Below other signatories |
He leaves behind tender poems, |
A speechless memory of dreams, |
An instant thought of lengthy trails, |
Which after many years remains. |
Of course, you have seen many times |
An album of a district maid, |
Covered with girlfriends' stupid rhymes |
From end to start and so again. |
Here, despite the rules of measure |
Poetic writing all for pleasure |
As sign of friendship introduced, |
And then reduced, and reproduced |
The legend on the title sheet: |
Qu' йcrirez-vous sur ces tablettes; |
Qu' ecrirez-vous sur ces tablettes; |
И подпись: t. а v. Annette; |
And signature: t. а v. Annette; |
And on the last page you will read: |
"Whoever loves you ever more |
Will write to you forever more". |
Here you will definitely find |
Two hearts, a torch, and a few flowers, |
And you will see two oaths here |
Of love until the end of days; |
Some evil poet of the army |
Had signed hastily a rhyme |
In such an album, dear friends, |
I would be glad to write myself, |
Being pretty sure in my conscience |
That all my painstaking nonsense |
Will earn a favorable glance, |
Nor later with an evil smile |
They will with grandeur analyze, |
To try and find my wicked lies. |
But you, the unconnected volumes |
From public library of idols, |
Luxurious folios and albums, |
Ordeals of fashionable rhymers, |
You, very smartly illustrated |
By Tolstoy, not to be equated, |
Or else, by Baratinsky pen, |
Let you be burned by heaven then. |
Whenever a resplendent lady |
Asks me to write in her in-quarto, |
What I experience is no quarter, |
Then budging in my depth already |
There is an incipient epigram, |
But what they want is madrigal. |
But Lenskoy writes no madrigal |
In the album of youthful Olga, |
His pen is ever breathing love, |
Is witty, brilliant and cold; |
Whatever is but noted or found, |
Of Olga, he will write it down: |
And being full of the truth of living |
Elegies flow like a river. |
The same as you, Yazikov gracious, |
In outbursts of your desires |
You sing God knows who inspires |
And the collection of precious verses |
Will represent to you sometime |
The whole story of your life. |
But hush! You hear? The strict critic |
Commanded us to throw aside |
The sad and gloomy wreathe poetic |
And to the brotherhood of rhymers |
He shouts: "stop whimpering and crying, |
And croaking the same chime, |
To feel regret of what is gone: |
Stop that and sing another song. |
- You lead us right, you will direct |
The trumpet, person and the knife, |
And the dead capital of mind |
You will command to resurrect: |
Will you not, friend? - Not in the least. |
"Write odes, gentlemen, at least. |
As written in the mighty ages, |
As it was done in old times..." |
Only solemn odes on all pages! |
All writing is the same kind. |
Recall the words of the satirist. |
An alien type of artful lyrist, |
Do you think he is of better writers |
Than our despondent rhymers? |
"But all in elegy is nil; |
Its purpose is a sorry sight; |
While the ode's aim is very high |
And noble..." Arguable still. |
But I prefer to stay silent; |
Between two ages lest be riot. |
Adherent of glory and noble codes, |
In agitation of his thoughts |
Vladimir could have written odes, |
But Olga would have read them not. |
Did many poets of tearful stories |
Read to the lovers of their glory |
Their compositions? People say |
That there is no higher pay. |
True, blessed is the lover tender |
When reading his beloved dreams |
To object of his reveries, |
A beauty languorous and slender. |
Blessed... although maybe her |
Anticipation is elsewhere.. |
As to the fruits of my own fancy |
And most harmonious designs, |
I read them to my old nanny, |
Friend of my juvenile times, |
Or, following a boring feast |
With an incautiously dropped guest, |
Having him captured by the fold, |
I smother him with tragic souls |
Or else (that all beyond the larks), |
Tormented by ennui and songs, |
Roaming above my pond, |
I scare the flocks of wild ducks: |
Having sweet sounding perceived, |
They banks of lake forever leave. |
And now Onegin. Apropo! |
I want to ask you for your patience: |
I will describe you all in all |
His all quotidian occupations. |
Onegin was living like a hermit; |
In summer he got out early |
And set out for a morning route |
To river at the mountain foot |
He swam across his Helle's sea |
To mimic Singer of Giulnara, |
And after drinking his cacao |
And sorting stupid magazines. |
He dressed himself... |
Long walks and reading, and deep sleep, |
The forest shade and purling streams, |
At times from a fair sweet |
A youthful and refreshing kiss, |
A bridle-happy zealous steed, |
A rather fanciful good feed, |
A bottle of transparent wine, |
Life solitary and resigned |
Onegin's whole life is holy; |
To it he thoroughly obeys |
Without counting summer days |
In carefree comfort, fully |
Forgetting both the city and the friends, |
And the ennui of festive trends. |
Our Northern summer time |
Is parody of Southern winters. |
It goes on and there is none, |
But we do not confess but whimper. |
The sky was breathing of the autumn, |
The sun was shining not so often, |
And we enjoyed a shorter day, |
The enigmatic forest shade |
Was being denuded with sad noise, |
The fog fell down upon the fields, |
A string of earsplitting geese |
Was drawing south: coming closer |
The time was an awful bore; |
November standing at the door. |
The dawn is rising in the cold. |
And in the fields the work has stopped. |
Escorted by his starving bitch of old, |
A hungry wolf goes on the road, |
His smell is nasty for the horse. |
He snorts, and traveler of course. |
Is rushing uphill at his best; |
Not any shepherd at sunset |
Drives cows to the cattle yard |
Nor at the hour of midday |
They are being summoned to eat hay; |
A virgin singing in the hut |
Is spinning, and the friend of night, |
A splinter cracking at her side. |
And here now the ground is frozen |
And silver spreading on the fields |
(The reader waits for rhyme roses; |
Here it is, say, how it feels.) |
More tidy than the modern tiles |
The river glitters clad in ice. |
The urchins' favorable race |
Is cutting ice with skating blades; |
Intent to swim in search of food, |
In cautious steps, a heavy goose |
Is treading ice in his red shoes |
To slip and drop; In merry mood |
First snow will twist around and thaw, |
Falling in stars upon the shore. |
What do you do then in the wild? |
Walking? The village of that period |
Was but a nuisance to the eye |
The landscape being extremely dreary |
Gallop on horseback in wild spaces? |
No good will come of such a racing: |
Stepping on ice a stumbled colt |
Will throw you down before you know. |
Sit tight under the desert tent |
W. Scott. |
And read: Here Pradt, here W. Scott. |
If not, then check the current cost, |
Be cross or drink, and night thus spent |
Will slip away, and next day, too. |
Your winter will go as hitherto. |
In straight resemblance to Child Harold |
He entered into thoughtful idle, |
From sleep he jumps in icy bathtub, |
And later home all the while, |
Alone, submerged into accounts, |
Armed with blunt key, he walks around, |
A two-ball billiard he plays |
All mornings and the whole days. |
The rural night is coming close. |
The billiards abandoned, keys retired, |
The table served before the fire. |
Eugeni is waiting, Lenskoy shows. |
Driving all three-in-hand alone |
All horses colored grey and roan. |
The widow's of Clicquot or Moet, |
The brand of wine that is blessed |
An icy bottle for the poet |
Has been selected and preserved. |
It is a sparkling Ipokrena |
Together with its interplay and glamor |
(Is very much like this and that) |
I would be staggered: but instead |
It happened that the last small change |
I used to give. We recollect |
Its captivating magic jet |
Originated many games, |
And also heaps of dreams and poems |
And arguments, and merry jokes! |
But it betrays with every draw |
My poor stomach straight away, |
So that the sensible Bordeaux |
I do prefer nowadays. |
On Ai I am now mostly missing, |
It bears a likeness to a mistress, |
One who is brilliant and incentive, |
But actually, meaningless and empty... |
But you, Bordeaux, are an ally, |
Who, both in trouble and in need |
Remains a friend, a friend indeed |
On who one always can rely. |
Or share a quiescent leisure. |
Long live Bordeaux, our friend and treasure! |
The fire is out; barely with cinders |
the coal is painted with gold; |
You hardly notice the flow. It steams |
The steam is twisting, and the hot |
Air in the fire place is breathing. Smoke from pipes |
To chimney draws. Light-colored pot |
Still goes hissing on the table... |
The evening haze is underway. |
(I love the friendly idle talk |
And also a cup of wine friendly |
The very time that is named |
The time between wolf and dog, |
But why, I cannot even guess) |
The friends are starting to converse: |
"Well, how is Tatiana? And Neighbors? |
And how is Olga, still so spritely?" |
- Could you please pass me that container? |
Enough... The family is lovely. |
The best regard from them to you. |
Olga's attractions are quite a few. |
Her smashing shoulders, and the breasts! |
And what a soul!.. Quite the best. |
You will oblige them by your call. |
Just have a look. Judge for yourself: |
You dropped in only twice, and then |
There is no trace of you at all. |
Oh, yes, I am nothing but a freak. |
They ask you to attend next week. |
"Me?" - Yes, Tatiana's nameday. |
They want you please on Saturday. |
Asked me to call you, I don't see why |
You should have reason to deny. |
"But there will be a lot of rogues, |
And all the rest of riffraff folks..." |
- There is no fear, all is clean. |
There will be only next of kin. |
Let's go. Just do me a favor. |
-So what? I do agree. You are so nice. |
With those words he promptly dries |
The glass, an offer to the neighbor, |
And then he went on talking stuff |
About Olga: that is love! |
He was delighted. In two weeks |
The happy term was designated |
Of the delightful love and wreathe |
And secrets of the bed expected, |
The hymen's troubles and concerns, |
Were also in expectance. |
The cold sequence of the yawning |
Have never shown him in dreaming |
Meantime we, the foes of hymen, |
In actual life we have only seen |
A single row of tiring scenes |
A novel a la Lafontaine ... |
My poor Lenskoy, in his heart |
He had been born for home hearth. |
He has been loved... at any rate |
And he was happy in his kind |
Be blessed the one devoted to faith, |
Who squashed agility of mind, |
Achieved serenity of soul |
As drunken traveler on the road, |
Or, tender insect with its sting, |
Sucking upon a flower of spring; |
But wretched is one, who knows best |
Whose head will never go wrong, |
Whose all the words will go strong |
Translations of them he will detest. |
Whose orders were to know all, |
And never to forget at all. |
EUGENE ONEGIN BY ALEXANDER PUSHKIN, |
CHAPTER SEVEN |
Moskva, beloved Russian daughter, |
Is there another one like you? |
Dmitriev |
How not to love my dear Moscow? |
Baratinsky |
Clampdown on Moscow! That means to see Le Mond! |
Where is it good? |
Where we are not. |
Griboedov |
Expelled by vernal radiation |
The snows from the mount and hill |
Ran down in a turbid fashion |
To join meadows flooded fill. |
The smile of nature so fair |
Meets early morning of the year. |
The sky is blazing going blue, |
The forests in transparent hue |
Are with a greenish color covered. |
And following her tribute grazing |
The bee flies back to waxy casing, |
The valleys go dry and colored, |
The nightingale in sole flight |
Has done his singing in the night. |
So depressed is your appearance, |
O spring, o spring! The time I loved! |
Such a relaxed and dreamy brilliance |
In all my soul, in my blood! |
With such a great humiliation |
I am enjoying insufflation |
Of spring that's fanning in my face |
Amid the silent village space. |
Perhaps enjoyment is strange to me |
That is so vivid and alive |
And what is so jubilant and bright |
Induces boredom and ennui |
Upon a soul long time dead |
And everything to her is sad. |
Perhaps not happy to play host |
To leaves that perished in the fall, |
Again eavesdropping on the forest |
We just remember heavy toll; |
Or seeing nature thus revive |
We timidly identify |
The waning row of passing years, |
With no hope of reverse. |
Perhaps our mind may be groped |
Amidst the dim poetic dreams, |
Or maybe old time of springs |
Will touch our heart with novel hope, |
And dreams of a remote sides, |
And of the moon and happy nights... |
The time has come: you, kind idlers, |
Epicureans and clever nerds, |
You, men indifferent and skivers, |
You, Levshin's little baby birds, |
You, heads of rural households, |
And you, the dames of tender souls, |
The spring is calling you to village, |
The time of warmth, of flowers and tillage, |
The time of massive merrymaking, |
The time of enticing nights. |
To fields, my friends, be quick and bright, |
In carriages with heavy lading, |
On mail or ordinary mounts, |
Move out of the city bounds. |
And you, the reader very gracious, |
In your good carriage of foreign names |
Abandon city ever restless, |
Where you had winter fun and games; |
Along with my capricious muse |
Let's go and see the forest hues |
Above the river of no name |
In village where my friend Eugeni, |
A hermit idle and depressed, |
Lived recently in cold season |
Within the reach of Tanya's vision, |
Fantastic dreamer most blessed; |
Where he is found no more, |
His trace is ever to deplore. |
Within the mountainous shadows |
Let's go there where the brooks |
Are running through the green of meadows |
And to the river through lime woods. |
A nightingale, spring's delight |
Is singing in the dead of night, |
And one can hear sounds of stream - |
There is a tombstone to be seen |
Between two outdated pines |
The legend on the stone reads: |
"Vladimir Lenskoy here is, |
Of early hero's death he dies, |
At such an age and such a year. |
Be calm. Your memory is dear. |
On branches of a tilting pine, |
It happened that an early breeze |
Above this urn of modest shrine |
Would rock the enigmatic wreath. |
It used to happen late at night |
Two sisters visited the sight, |
And under moon's uncertain light |
The two embraced and gently cried. |
There are no more of relics dismal |
Of trodden path remains none. |
It is erased. The wreath is gone. |
Beneath, alone, grey-haired and brittle |
The shepherd sings his old song |
Spinning his footwear all along. |
For Lensky she would never pine, |
Her suffering was not too strong, |
Alas! a marriageable bride |
Would not feel sadness very long. |
Another one claimed her credence, |
Another one assuaged her grievance |
The lancer came to fascinate, |
The lancer came to captivate, |
She loved the lancer with affection |
And here with him before the throne, |
She stands embarrassed under crown, |
Her head inclined with subjection |
The downcast eyes are beaming fire, |
And on the lips an easy smile. |
Poor Lenskoi! in grave abysmal |
Inside the endlessness obtuse |
Was he embarrassed, singer dismal |
By the betrayal's fatal news? |
Or put to sleep by deadly fluid |
The poet with his feelings ruined |
Cannot be any more confused, |
The world to him being closed and mute? |
Thus an indifferent oblivion |
Is there for us behind the tombs, |
The enemies, the brides and grooms |
Keep mum. But the estate and bullion |
Sustain heirs angry choir |
In controversial quagmire. |
The voice of Olya very soon |
Among the Larins was no more, |
The lancer, captive of his doom |
Had to be present at his corps. |
Awash with floods of bitter tears |
Old mother for her daughter fears |
Looking like half-alive, half-dead, |
Tatyana tears could not shed. |
By fatal paleness was covered |
Her facial image looking mortal. |
All people gathered on the portal, |
There was a very fussy crowd |
Around the youthful couple's cart, |
Tatyana saw them both depart. |
And very long through foggy air |
She followed them with heavy heart, |
Alas! Alone standing there |
With her companion she would part, |
Her little dove of younger years, |
Her confidante, her very best |
Thrown away by blind fate |
Removed and parted with her mate. |
She walks around in her grief, |
Or looking in the empty wood |
There is nowhere a joy or good, |
Nor an appeasement or relief |
To her suppressed and hidden tears - |
Her heart in bits and pieces tears. |
And in the solitude severe |
Her passion is burning like a flame |
Her heart is speaking very clear. |
Recalling silently his name. |
Let him be never ever seen |
He has committed a great sin |
The one who killed her dear brother, |
The poet died... and to another |
His bride is given for a wife |
He will remain as unknown, |
The poet's memory has flown |
As smoke floating in the sky, |
Perhaps two hearts as still bereft. |
In sadness... Is there sadness left? |
The waters flew. A beetle buzzed. |
It was an evening. Sky was fading. |
The round dances fell apart |
The fishermen got fire burning. |
And lighted by the silver light |
And staying in the fields at night |
In her profound monologue |
Tatyana had a lonely walk. |
She went along, and of a sudden |
She saw at once a manor dome, |
A hamlet under hill, a grove, |
A clear river and a garden |
She looked and looked, and in her heart |
The beat became very hard. |
By apprehension she is confused: |
"Shall I go forth, or turn about? |
He is not in. I have no excuse... |
Let me just take a look around". |
From hill Tatyana goes down , |
Scarcely breathing; casts about |
A gaze that's full of big surprise... |
And in the middle of her flight |
The dogs came down on her barking, |
When to her loud screams and yells |
The household boys and girls |
Came running, arguing and fighting, |
The urchins drove the dogs apart |
Taking the lady under guard. |
Tatyana came to see domain, |
And in a minute of her call |
The children ran to the Big Dame |
To fetch the keys of entrance hall. |
The housekeeper came in person |
To open doors of old mansion, |
So, Tanya steps in empty place |
That was my hero's living space. |
The key is on the billiard board, |
A horsewhip thrown on the couch |
Tatyana looks around the lounge |
And stepping further goes forth. |
Right here in the chimney corner, |
The master used to sit and ponder. |
Here with him in winter dined, |
Our neighbor Lensky, now deceased. |
Here the master had reclined |
Follow me now, if you please. |
He slept in here and drank his tea, |
Received his clerk and talked to me |
In early morning read a book |
The old one also liked this nook. |
It happened often Sunday nights |
Here at the window wearing glasses |
He played with me a game of passes, |
God save his soul in paradise |
And let him stay the rest of time |
In everlasting peace and quiet. |
Tatyana with humiliation |
Is casting gazes on it all, |
To her there is no estimation, |
All does revival to the soul |
With semi-torturous delight, |
A desk with an extinguished light, |
A pile of books, and at the ledge |
A bed all covered with a stretch, |
A dreary moon in window picture |
The room in pale semi-light, |
Lord Byron's portrait at full height, |
A pole with an iron creature |
With hooded face and shaggy dross, |
With arms contracted in a cross. |
She stands alone, all enthralled. |
Thus being by vogues immobilized. |
But it is late. The wind is cold. |
The grove goes quiet for the night. |
Above the fog-enshrouded waters; |
Having been far from native quarters, |
The moon is sunk beyond the view, |
Tatyana is long overdue. |
And Tanya, hiding agitation, |
Not quite without a heavy groan |
Is starting on a journey home, |
First asking for authorization |
To visit the remote abodes. |
To browse alone old tomes. |
Tatyana left the old darling |
Beyond the gate. And in a day |
She came about in early morning |
To visit the abandoned bay, |
In a quiescent study-slot |
Having forgotten all the world, |
And very long in silence deep |
She chose nothing but to weep. |
And then she started avid reading. |
First she was cool, but then it changed: |
Selection of the books looked strange |
Reading became very pleasing, |
Tatyana with an eager soul |
Arrived into a world quite novel. |
Although we know that Eugeni |
Has long been out of love for books, |
Nevertheless a few great genii |
He kept excluded in his nooks. |
The singer of Gyaur and Juan, |
Or it may be another fawn, |
The one describing current age, |
Where the contemporary sage |
Had been depicted to perfection |
With his immoral inner soul, |
Self-loving and extremely cold, |
Abandoned to imagination, |
With his embittered empty mind, |
Steaming in acts of every kind. |
The eyes of the attentive girl |
Regarded with an extra care. |
The markings of a nervous nail, |
That many pages have retained |
Tatyana could observe with tremor |
The thought or very special memo |
That struck Onegin's mind or thought, |
Whereby he would agree or not |
She could encounter on the margins. |
The lines penciled by his hand, |
And everywhere his soul went |
Being shown through upon his markings: |
In a small cross or brief remark, |
Or with a little question mark. |
And then with caution, step by step |
Tatyana starts to recognize, |
It is now clear, God is great, |
The one for whom she was to sigh, |
Has been condemned by fate so mighty. |
A fad so dangerous and crafty, |
Produced by either hell or heaven, |
This angel or this haughty demon, |
And he, maybe an emulation, |
A trifling ghost, or perhaps, |
A Muscovite in Harold's dress, |
An alien whims' interpretation, |
A list of fashionable words? |
Is he a travesty of sorts? |
But she is home to have gotten, |
Has the enigma been resolved? |
The hours run, she has forgotten |
Or has the word been found at all? |
Two of the neighbors gathered there |
She being the subject as it were. |
- Tatyana is completely grown, - |
Said old woman with a groan. - |
But Olga is of age more tender. |
The girl must be accommodated, |
The time is ripe, Why are we waiting? |
She says the same to each contender: |
No, I will not. In gloomy mood |
She roams madly in the wood. |
"Perhaps she is in love?" - With who? |
Buyanov bade but was rejected, |
And Petushkov Ivan, he, too. |
Hussar Pikhtin likewise suggested; |
He was like crazy after Tanya, |
He fawned on her as sweet as honey |
I thought perhaps that she would go; |
Not likely! And again no. |
"Well, matushka, what is the matter? |
To Moscow, to the fairs bridal! |
They say there may be places idle". |
- Oh, dear Lord, no money left. |
"Sufficient for a single season, |
But then a loan may stand to reason". |
The old woman took to liking |
A clever and a good advice; |
She checked her books - and then decided |
To go to Moscow in winter ice. |
And Tanya hears of this news. |
To the demanding public views |
To show her clear honest kind |
Of simple and provincial mind, |
And the retarded coats and frocks, |
And old-time speech and sounds; |
To the derisive Moscow crowds |
Of the enchantresses and fops. |
How awful! better stay for good |
In the obscurity of wood. |
And now awakening at sunrise |
She goes to see the fields in haste |
With wet humiliated eyes |
She overlooks them and she says: |
"Fair you well, my low grounds, |
And you, the summits of high mounds, |
And you, familiar trees and woods, |
Forgive me, oh celestial goods, |
Forgive me, lovely countryside, |
I am exchanging quiet light |
For brilliant and restless strife. |
Forgive me, too, my careless life! |
Whereto, wherefore is all my haste? |
What is the order of my fate? |
Her lone walks have then been lengthened |
Now a hill, now a brook |
Will stop without any effort |
Tatyana at a charming nook. |
She in an old friendly fashion |
Is still in hasty conversation, |
With quiet groves and lavish meadows |
But summer passes like a shadow. |
And then the golden autumn came, |
The nature is a tender sight, |
It is luxuriously bright... |
And here the North is driving gale, |
A warning breath, a howling sound |
The fairy winter is around. |
She came in scattered snow clusters, |
On branches of the oak trees, |
She settled down in wavy carpets |
Among the hills, around the fields; |
The immobile river bed |
She leveled in a fluffy pad; |
The frost has struck and we are glad |
To see the tricks of winter spread. |
Only Tanya' heart is not too roused |
The winter in the face to stare |
Or freely breathe the frosty air, |
To grab the snow on bathroom house |
To wash the shoulders and head: |
She hates to travel in a sled. |
Departure day was overdue, |
The deadline also goes by, |
The cart was given a review. |
Having been dumped to rot and dry. |
Three covered carts and sleds with hoods |
Would carry all domestic goods, |
All pots and pans, and chairs, and chests, |
And jars of jam, and mattress beds, |
And feather beds, and cocks in cages |
Горшки, тазы et cetera, |
And pots and pans for fancy foods, |
Well, quite a lot of sundry goods, |
Among the servants of all ranges |
A farewell wail, a noise was raised, |
They brought to court eighteen old jades. |
They harness horses to the carriage |
While cooks are busy with the meal, |
The carts are loaded with baggage, |
The dames and coaches curse and squeal. |
A skinny jade with shaggy mane |
Is carrying a bearded brave, |
And at the gates servants collected |
To farewell those they respected. |
They settled, and the blissful cart |
Is sliding down at slow pace. |
"Farewell, my own peaceful place! |
Farewell, the refuge of my heart. |
Shall I see you again?.." Tears |
Are pouring downward like rivers. |
When the good old education |
Becomes more solid and widely spread |
With time (regarding calculation |
Of philosophic data pads, |
In some five hundred years) our roads |
Will change their nature on the whole: |
The highways all across the nation |
Will find links and intersection. |
In unimaginable arcs, |
Steel bridges will embrace the mounds, |
We'll move the mountains and grounds, |
There will be spacious aqueducts, |
And on the globe wide and far |
Each station will become a bar. |
Our old bridges rot and rust, |
And roads are extremely loose, |
Inside the stations lice and bugs |
Will not afford a minute's snooze |
In cold huts there are no pubs. |
But you can see the list of tags. |
For bogus food there is a price |
To stimulate and appetize, |
And in the local forge meanwhile |
Before the slow dying kiln |
The article of Europe's mind |
While giving blessings to the moats |
And furrows of domestic roads. |
Instead, the travel in winter cold |
Is very easy and mostly good |
Like rhymes of the latest mode |
The winter path is very smooth. |
Our service stations never rest, |
The triplet horses are the best, |
And miles, for the idle sense, |
Are passing over like a fence. |
The poor Larina went slow, |
Being apprehensive of long runs, |
For our virgin it was fun: |
Not postal horses but her own. |
Travel was boring but very nice |
For seven endless days and nights. |
It is quite close. White-stoned Moscow |
Will open its majestic face. |
With burning heat of gold crosses |
The ancient heads are all ablaze. |
Brothers! I felt extremely well, |
When churches, towers and bells, |
Revealed to me a great display |
In semicircular array |
So often in bitter separation |
In my forever roaming lot, |
It is of you that I have thought. |
Moskva... it has an implication |
For any living Russian heart. |
The echo will be quick to start. |
Surrounded by oaks and limes |
Is Peter's Castle. Heavy frown |
Shows its pride of recent times. |
Napoleon dreamt to see it down, |
And Moscow crawling on her knees |
To bring him old Kremlin's keys, |
Having been drunk with recent fame, |
But cap in hand she never came. |
To no one she ever bowed, |
For the inspired show host |
She was preparing a roast |
And many other things around. |
From hence, in deepest thought entrained |
He would observe a dreadful flame. |
The Peter's Temple. Along it goes. |
Fairwell, the evidence of fame, |
Be off! You see frontier posts |
Show white; the cart is on the Main |
All flickers past:, old women, booths |
Urchins and groceries, and fruits, |
Merchants and sacks and Asian folks |
Mansions and cloisters, and potholes, |
The cart is racing through the bumps. |
Merchants and shacks and village men, |
Boulevards and towers and dens, |
Drug shops and shacks and storage dumps, |
Terraces, lions on the homes |
And flocks of birds upon the domes. |
In this fatiguing stroll trip |
A couple of hours away |
In a remote blind street |
The cart is standing at the gate. |
The old aunt living there, |
With a consumption of three years. |
And only now they have come. |
The doors are opening ajar, |
Bespectacled, in shredded plaid, |
A grey Kalmuk at once appears |
And guests are met by loud screams |
By princess stretched on the daybed. |
There follow kisses and embraces |
Amidst abundant exclamations. |
- Княжна, mon ange! - "Pachette!" |
- My princess! Angel!-" - My Alina! |
"Who could but think? - So much has passed! |
How long? - My favorite cousina! |
Just take your seats, it is so fast. |
My God, it is a novel story..." |
- Tatyana is my child, my glory. - |
"Oh, Tanya, please, come close to me - |
I feel as if in reverie... |
Cousin, remember Grandison? |
- Well, Grandison?.. ah, Grandison! |
Of course, I do. Is he still on? |
"In Moscow, lives at Simeon; |
I spoke to him at any rate; |
He married off his son of late. |
And that one... I will tell you, honey, |
You, too. To all her kin and folk |
Tomorrow we will show Tanya. |
I cannot do a lot of walk; |
I drag my feet extremely slow. |
But you are weary from the road |
Now I suggest that we retire, |
No strength is left... my breast is tired... |
Joy, too, for me is hard to bear, |
Not only sorrow... oh, my soul, |
No life in me is left at all... |
I am good for nothing, oh my dear" |
And here she lost her breath at last. |
She broke in tears and collapsed. |
Sick woman's endearment and jokes |
Is moving to Tatyana's heart, |
But she does not enjoy new home |
Being so attached to her courtyard. |
Sleeping behind a silky curtain |
Does nothing to remove her burden, |
And early toll of the bells, |
Forerunner of the morning spells, |
Is raising Tanya from repose. |
To sit her down at the windows. |
Twilight dispels; her vision hinders |
To see her own fields and groves |
Before her stands an alien farm, |
A stable, kitchen, and a barn. |
And so, to all familial centers |
Is Tanya forwarded in haste, |
To introduce to all ancestors |
Her dissipated lazy grace. |
Relations from remote places |
Are always met with wide embraces, |
And exclamations, and the meals. |
"Oh, Tanya really appeals! |
Quite recently she was baptized. |
I loved her, she was such a dear. |
And I once even tweaked her ear. |
"I gave her my cakes with spice!" |
And in a voice grannies complain: |
"The years go quickly to the drain." |
They never change, nonetheless; |
The old brands remain set: |
Aunt Helena, the old princess |
Wears the same silky hat; |
Lukeria Lvovna paints white, |
Lubov Petrovna always lies, |
Ivan Petrovich staying stupid, |
Semion Petrovich staying cupid, |
And Pelageya Nikolavna |
Stays loyal to monsieur Finmouse, |
The same spitz, the same spouse; |
Who, his club's member of renown |
Remains humble and in situ, |
Eating and drinking for the two. |
Amidst the hugging and embraces |
First eyeing her in silence though |
The youngest of the Moscow graces, |
With courtesy from head to toe, |
Their daughters find her out of range, |
Somewhat provincial and strange, |
And also pale and poorly fed, |
However, not at all too bad; |
And as if living in the wild, |
They take her home and make friends, |
And kiss her, fondly pressing hands, |
Fluffing her curls in latest kind, |
Confiding with a singing art |
The secrets of the virgin heart, |
Conquests, their own and by others, |
Their hopes, rogueries and dreams. |
Thus flow innocent discussions |
With an embellishment of trims, |
To compensate the revelations, |
They would for a direct confession |
Lamentably present demands, |
But Tanya, like it was in trance, |
Would heed their speeches not at all, |
Will never understand a bit, |
And all her heart's clandestine need, |
The precious treasure of her goal |
Retains keeping mum and sole |
Sharing it with not a soul. |
Tatyana wants to hear better |
But in the guest room all attention |
Is being engaged in silly matter; |
The whole discourse and conversation. |
All those are so pale and trifling |
That even gossips are too stifling; |
In dry and fruitless talks and speech, |
In inquiries and news of which |
No flash of thought appears smart, |
Not inadvertently, by chance |
Will ever smile languid glance, |
Will ever falter any heart, |
For fun or for whatever joke, |
For all those things le monde is broke. |
Archival youths arrive in droves |
To stare and talk among themselves, |
Being most likely useless rogues |
All in a manner of bad grace. |
One was a sort of dismal fool, |
He found her extremely cool, |
And leaning right in the doorway |
He elegized her straight away. |
Once visiting a boring aunt, |
Vyazemsky promptly took a seat, |
Impressing Tanya quite a bit. |
When seeing her with him around |
A man adjusting his head gear |
Wished that her story were made clear. |
But where the stormy Tragic Goddess |
Is sounding a lengthy howl, |
Where she is wagging her false clothes |
In front of unexcited crowd, |
With Comedy dozing on the sly |
Without regard to friendly cries, |
With only dancing as it were |
Honored by audience everywhere |
(In previous years it was the same, |
The time known by you and I), |
She never drew upon her side |
Either lorgnettes of jealous dames, |
Or tubes of famous connoisseurs |
From either lodges or the chairs. |
They bring her soon to the Assembly. |
The rattle of music, heat, emotions, |
The cram and glitter of the candles |
The flashing swirl of rapid motions, |
Light-weight attires of the beauties, |
The choir lofts ablaze with cuties, |
A wide half-circle of the brides, |
All things around produce surprise. |
Most uncompromising men of fashion |
Show their insolence and gillette, |
And inconsiderate lorgnette. |
Hussars relieved upon vacation |
Are in a hurry to succeed, |
To shine and charm, then to recede. |
The stars are beauties of the night |
They are in Moscow quite a few. |
Of those the brightest of the bright |
Is moon in aerial blue. |
But she who I can never try |
To give a trouble with my lyre, |
As well as the majestic moon |
Among the wives she shines one. |
With what a super-human pride, |
With what a joy she touches earth! |
Her chest is full of tender breath! |
How graceful is her magic stride! |
But no more. Don't start anew. |
You fully paid the crazy due. |
Uproar and laughter, run and bow, |
Between two aunts in a hall, |
Galop, mazurka, walts... For now, |
Unnoticed by anyone at all, |
Tatyana looks and cannot find, |
She hates the world of shaky mind; |
The air is not enough to breathe |
She dreams to be among the fields, |
To the secluded lonely nooks, |
To rural life among the poor, |
Where the transparent brooklets pore, |
Back to her flowers and books, |
To the twilight of lime trees, |
Where he appeared to her pleas. |
Beau monde and noisy ball forgotten |
Her thought is flying far and wide, |
Some general of great importance |
Has glued on her his pair of eyes. |
The aunts winking with all might |
And pushing Tanya on the side |
Each whispered promptly in her ear: |
- Just take a moment and peer - |
"What? To the left? Where? What is on?" |
- Well, never mind, as I said, |
Just in that cluster, full ahead, |
Two other guys in uniform. |
He turned again and stepped aside... |
"That stout general? To the right?" |
Tatyana, she is such a dear, |
Let me concede her triumph now, |
And redirect my steps from here, |
Lest I forget the prime star. |
Oh, yes, some words are here missing: |
My story is aimed at a sibling, |
And many of his whims and fobs, |
Please, bless my strenuous lengthy jobs, |
Oh you, my greatest epic muse, |
You magic wand to me awarded. |
Allow me not to walk as wanted. |
Enough! The burden is no use. |
To classic writing I obeyed: |
There is a preface, though late. |
